Maybe travelling thousands/millions of LYs takes decades/centuries/millennia? Machines might break down after such long flights, which might explain the occasional crash landings.
Non-US commercial pilots have reported UFOs for decades. US pilots are very hesitant to report such phenomena because of how they are required to report and how such a report could/probably would impact their careers. Though some have reported anyway.
However, it's the IR/radar evidence that should be taken more seriously than just the individual eyewitness accounts. Those are much more difficult to explain away.
