Trades don’t just come about in the 10 minutes you are on the clock. Look at the Mahomes deal. The Chiefs knew how far they could move up and then they started talking to Buffalo before the draft.

It's not Madden to think you can trade into the top 3 with that package and use the leverage that the Lions or Redskins currently possess to pit the Dolphins against other teams for something they were highly highly highly likely to do in the first place, which is trade up to get their QB of the future. Especially since the two teams you'd be trading for are defensive minded coaches in Rivera (a Reid disciple and friend btw) and Patricia.
It's not Madden to put yourself into that position instead of another team and use Chris Jones as the leverage to do it. You can easily bullshit one of those teams and say you want Chase Young, or you want Derrick Brown to replace Jones and then go another route. You trade up and say to Miami, make me an offer I got others on the line wanting this pick and see what you can get. The Bears gave up "The Nos. 3, 67 and 111 picks, as well as a 2018 third-round pick, to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for the second overall pick." For Mitch Trubisky and to move up one spot. Yes, it is all predicated on someone trading for the #3 pick and it is a risk, but a worthy one to not be buried by heavy cap numbers next year to where you have to juggle and replace three to four positions with rookies or UFAs in order to make it work. It's alot of work around just to keep Chris Jones for one more year. Not to mention you take away one of the Chargers QB options so they get in a bidding war with another team to trade up to get either Herbert or Tua if they want him.
