LNBS: Let’s talk about giving Chris Jones a new deal.

First off, I love the kid and think he’s worth elite type money on a long term extension. This thread is to have an open discussion about the benefits and concerns on giving Jones a long term deal this offseason.

First off, here’s what I’m projecting his contract to look like...

4 years 80-85m with 50m fully guaranteed at signing.

I know some of you are going to scoff at that money, but before you do, peek at Donald’s deal and take into account Jones is a 24 years old all pro at a premium position in today’s game. He has legit DMVP type quality/upside to his game. Don’t come at me with any “home town discount” stuff. If we don’t give him top money, someone will.

FA when he’s almost 29. This year and next have low cap hits, then the contract effects the cap for 2-3 years when Jones should be fully developed into a complete monster by Daly.

Here’s some things to think about...

*He’s coming off an amazing year where the defense provided big time pressure from both edges. The guys that provided that pressure are now playing in SF and Indianapolis.

*He doesn’t attack the run the same way he attacks the pass. He gets his body turned, plays too high and doesn’t give consistent effort in run defense. I’m sure this will change drastically under the new staff and attrition.

*Will he give the same dedication to his craft when he has the distractions a mega deal generates?

*Teams are going to be able to focus on him every game when they don’t need to account for Dee Ford and Justin Houston off the edges. That means Jones will need to do A LOT more to get the same results, going forward. Unless KC gets another star pass rusher in a trade, or in the draft... Jones will be getting double and triple teams every single week.

I'm curious to see if he ends up playing on the end very often. With the way he dropped weight last year and with Nnadi playing well along with Xavier Williams. I just think CJ could be used outside or inside.

Either way, he needs to be paid. He's dammmmn good.

It needs to be a step less than Donald money. If he wants Donald money I could be convinced but the guarantee is going to have to be pretty small.

I love the dude. LOVE the dude. But he’s not Donald.

As long as we are a couple million per below Donald, fire away.

Did we extend this piece of shit yet????

Yep. It can be close to account for cap inflation, but he's a tier below Donald and should be paid accordingly.

Seems more often than not (based on no research at all I’ve done or really any basis I can reference) that really good players that get locked up through extensions while still young end up being less expensive and less risky than doing the same with a similar caliber FA.

The deal I suggested in the op is the halfway point between Donald (22.5m per) and Flowers (18m per).

I’m sure that initial conversations started with Rosenhaus asking for 22.6m per. Veach offering 18m. Second conversation had Drew lowering to Donald’s deal and Veach going up to 18.5...

My hope is we can get him for 5-100

I’m down with 20 I think. I’d be inclined to not backload it too much. Maybe that’s irrational, but I’m still salty about how ****ed we are because of Berry and Houston.

i just got home, has he signed yet? :D

Probably have to guarantee quite a bit to get 20 per, yes?

This was his first big year. I’m tempted to see if he can repeat it this year. If he does then you give him what he wants

Yes! As of today he is a Chief for this next season. You did your part.

He was a consistent force last year and I'm not buying he's weak in the run game. Is he Donald? No, but look how Donald is used, all over the place. That makes teams adjust, often at the last second. If we think CJ can do the same thing, groovy, pay the man. I'm with Buehler, too. Let's not get ourselves in a Berry situation by backloading a contract.

Just get it done. Get these deals done early as opposed to waiting til the franchise tag.
