Bump 12-10-2019 06:23 PM

I haven't seen one mention of rotten tomatoes greatest movie of all time (and not even close) and it came out in the 2010's.

I liked Drive and I liked Insterstellar and I liked John Wick (only seen the first one).

That's all I can even think of from this decade that's worth mentioning.

Discuss Thrower 12-10-2019 06:47 PM

No particular order but if I were to rattle off 10 movies I've seen from 2010 to 2019:

Rogue One
Inception
Interstellar
Her
Bladerunner 2049
Django Unchained
Edge of Tomorrow
The Big Short
Drive
21 Jump Street
Great Gatsby

hometeam 12-10-2019 09:48 PM

True Grit
Sicario
Kick-Ass
Django Unchained
Thor:Ragnarok
Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey
Logan

So pretty much super hero movies and gritty action movies

True Grit is up there all time with Tombstone as my 1 and 1a

ThaVirus 12-10-2019 10:38 PM

I remember watching Drive randomly and really enjoying it but can’t, for the life of me, remember shit about the plot.

Speaking of being pleasantly surprised, Nighrcrawler with Gylenhal was a similar experience. Really good movie out of nowhere.

American Hustle
Zero Dark Thirty
The Mule
Darkest Hour

ThaVirus 12-11-2019 09:21 PM

Damn, forgot about Cabin in the Woods. Another pleasant surprise.

Buehler445 12-11-2019 09:56 PM

The Big Short is on a lot of lists. Don’t get me wrong, I love it. But I’m a dork for that kind of business junk. I didn’t figure it would be so popular here.

DeepPurple 12-12-2019 08:58 AM

There are some movies that are fun to watch but I didn't include because they are what some people might consider to be mindless. "Drive" was mentioned and I just looked at my IMDB score and I gave it an 8.0, I didn't include it because it was fun to watch, but as some have said, I can't remember what it was about. Another just like that was "Baby Driver" which I also gave an 8, although I think more for just the music, the soundtrack made the movie. My third guilty pleasure I didn't include was "Hardcore Henry", which I also gave an 8. That was really fun to watch, but what was it about? On my list for example, The Girl on the Train I can tell you everything that went on in that movie, I believe I've seen it 5 times, that's a memorable movie.

scho63 12-12-2019 09:38 AM

I love learning about movies I've never heard of. I'm gonna watch The Girl on the Train within a week.

I watched Baby Driver this past week just by accident and really thought it was pretty cool. Liked the way Jon Hamm played his character.

I see some of the following great movies on lists here;
-Gone Girl (WATCHED)
-Hell or High Water (WATCHED)
-10 Cloverfield Lane
-Moneyball (WATCHED)
-Wolf of Wall Street (WATCHED)
-Django Unchained (WATCHED)
-Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (WATCHED)
-12 Years a Slave (2013) (WATCHED)
-Argo (WATCHED)
-American Hustle (WATCHED)
-Moonrise Kingdom (WATCHED)

I'm sure I'm missing many more. The Big Short is normally a movie I will find a way to watch but so far I haven't.

I'm not a sci-fi fan nor do I really like things like Mad Max or other crazy movies of killing and violence.

I was not expecting to like it, but I watched it because the buzz was incessant.

And there's a reason for that.

It certainly is a crazy movie with killing and violence, but the positives for it are.

It's a singular vision. Every frame is the creator's creation, and it's wildly inventive.

It's ALL practical effects. The sheer volume of innovation and inspiration merits respect regardless of what you think of the movie itself, or the genre in general.

And despite being wild and wooly and endlessly inventive, all with practical effects and immense sets and set pieces, it still presents a coherent and moving narrative. The creator makes sure to move the camera to key in on the emotional core of what is happening at every critical moment.

As a begrudging initial viewer who ended up putting it high on my list, I'd say even if the concept doesn't appeal to you, you'll end up appreciating the execution and owe it to yourself to experience it at least once.

Beef Supreme 12-12-2019 10:25 AM

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone list Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Gravedigger 12-12-2019 12:26 PM

Inception
Captain America: Winter Soldier
Mad Max: Fury Road

I was thinking this effort could be improved upon down the line if the participants picked out one of their unique, or at least minority, picks they are particularly passionate about and make a case for it specifically.

I mean, I don't think anyone sentient in 2019 needs to be sold or dissuaded from a viewing of The Dark Knight Rises, but for instance, I'd be interested to hear more about Bucky Larson. . . . err. . . .

I actually went through IMDb's top 200 movies for each year from 2010-2019 and came up with a list of about 30 that I really liked. Narrowed that down to the ten I listed.

That's what I did, I have 2500 movies rated on IMDB. I pulled up my ratings and selected newest ratings and went through to 2010 and looked for my 10, 9 and 8 ratings and came up the list I posted. I'm surprised I'm the only one that picked The Shape of Water. I thought it had everything, sci-fi, mystery, suspense, great acting, I believe it would be a great flick for TNT or TBS to run on the weeksends in place of Forrest Gump. Here's my list again.

American Hustle
Silver Linings Playbook
The Girl on the Train
Gone Girl
Ex Machina
The Shape of Water
The Revenant
Blue Jasmine
Black Swam
The Town

Between the cost of going to the movies being so expensive now and not subscribing to the movie channels, I miss a lot more movies now that I would have seen once upon a time. Hell, I've only seen three of these movies (Silver Linings Playbook, Ex Machina and Revenant).

Fff**** forgot about Whiplash. And The Other Guys, too.

Damn. I want to say both supplant Gatsby but I'm such a Baz fanboi that I dunno if I can give it the push.

Also John Wick deserves recognition for obvious reasons.

Hm..

WRT to Shoes' comment, this is a bit long but this guy does a great job breaking down the movie from the standpoint of its backdrop: jazz school

I would have put Whiplash in my second top 10. It is a good psychological movie much like Black Swan, but it lacked being a real thriller. Unless they pulled a Full Metal Jacket stunt and he shot JK Simmons, but that didn't happen.

Ironic you cite FMJ, I haven't watched Whiplash, but the coverage struck me as 'FMJ for jazz band.' And that sapped it of appeal.

I'm sure it's well made, but I was in jazz band and it was nothing like FMJ. And I just don't have an appetite for another narrative about learning through applied trauma.

I haven't seen everything out there, so I'm sure there there are plenty of movies that should be here that I missed. I still need to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Mad Max Fury Road

Logan
Guardians of the Galaxy

In my second 10 along with Whiplash, I would include Gravity and Baby Driver. There's one movie no one has mentioned and I haven't seen it. Neflix doesn't have it, and the premium channels have not shown it. It's the Sister Brothers. Has anyone seen it? I heard it was good.

It's less FMJ and more of a "talented athlete dealing with a talented yet psychopathic coach" movie.

I loved this movie and one of Wes Anderson's best works. Highly underrated and a fantastic cast. :thumb:

kc rush was also the first to list Arrival. I saw that in the theater and recorded on HBO and watched it a couple of more times. That's a really deep movie and Amy Adams is very easy on the eyes. I really liked that the aliens were not some creature, but really something with many levels. That movie I don't believe a lot of people will get it the first time, that Amy could see into the future and that's why she was chosen.

Good topic, but I need a list of movies released in the 2010s. I don't watch many movies, and I usually don't see them in their first run, so I never know when they came out.

That is because it's a children's movie.

I didn't know Martin Scorsese was on this board.

That movie I don't believe a lot of people will get it the first time, that Amy could see into the future and that's why she was chosen.

My understanding is that the reason she could see into the future was because she learned the alien "language" which allows her to view time non-linearly. I didn't think she could see into the future before encountering the aliens.

I'm not necessarily itching for a debate/discussion, but I am curious if I'm the only person who's seen Parasite?

When Amy Adams flashed back to a party a year before with the Chinese Ambassador and she whispered something that she heard in present, that's when it got confusing and I'm not even sure I have it in the right order. It's been a couple of years, but she said whatever, he then listened to her and called off the strike against the Aliens in the present day. It was mind blowing to me.

Dallas Buyer's Club! Another great one. Not one I'd want to watch often (if ever again) though, like 12 Years a Slave.

Matthew Mchowever you spell it is ****ing awesome these days. One of my fave actors.

I was skeptical when the new wave of the Rocky Franchise came out, but I've heard that they're actually really good. I'll still probably skip Balboa, but check out the Creed films

Saw it.

It’s very good, although I think the people calling it “one of the best movies of the decade” are wildly overrating it.

It’s very solid though.
