Breaking Bad: The Movie

Admittedly, I don’t keep up with pop culture much, but how did I not know that a Breaking Bad movie was coming? I’m also surprised that given its popularity a thread hadn’t already been started.

Here’s a nice summary for all the luddites like me that didn’t know this was coming:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.new...455959%3famp=1

Hopefully they don’t shit on their legacy.

Zebedee DuBois 08-23-2019 05:53 PM

I will watch it.

It's like the story is playing out in it's timeline, and we are watching it in dog years.

Sure-Oz 08-24-2019 04:24 PM

Read that it will release on Netflix October 11th and it's 2 hours.

Bump 08-24-2019 05:00 PM

loved the show, won't watch this.

Useless fact: Breaking Bad is the only new show from the last 20 years that I've stuck with from beginning to end.

notorious 08-25-2019 09:57 AM

The writers and producers know what they are doing.

It will be good.

Chiefspants 08-25-2019 10:24 AM

I doubted Better Call Saul.

I won't do that again. Vince Gilligan has earned a free pass to do whatever he wants to do with his universe, and I have a feeling he wouldn't have done this without having full confidence there was a story to tell here.

I personally enjoy Better Call Saul more than Breaking Bad.

Both though are amazing.

I love that they did this in the stealth of night and we get it in two short months.

because I thought the ending of the show was good, what would the movie even be about? A prequel of him teaching chemistry to high school students? He survives and goes to prison might be worth watching I guess.

Heisenbrg will (still) be dead. It will likely show him in some flashbacks, but he won't be "in" the movie.

I believe it's supposed to focus more on Jesse in the aftermath of Walt's death. It's not a prequel.

This feels poorly written. Like the ad agency people for Netflix wrote it, not the series creators.

THIS is ridiculous. The amount of time between seasons of shows. Better Call Saul its like I could give two F***s now, its been so long. I don't even remember what is going on in that show, and half the stuff from that show I remember incorrectly as being in breaking bad instead.

Yeah. Showing on Netflix and select theaters at the same time. I'm going to see it in the theater, just cause it seems like the kind of movie that should be seen in a theater.

stumppy 10-11-2019 09:37 PM

Watched this tonight with a buddy of mine. We both thought it was pretty good and finished Jesse's story up just fine. It was a lot more like a longer episode of the series than a movie.
It fits in nicely in the Breaking Bad world.

Gadzooks 10-11-2019 10:03 PM

No spoilers here, but one of the things that threw me off was how some of the actors had aged to the point where it it's off-putting/confusing. It's to the point where they distract from the story.
(Maybe it's just the way I'm wired).
Why does it take them so long to produce these gosh darned things?

One in particular has aged and gained about 100 pounds....

But was still one of the better parts of the movie.

Same here. I Love Better Call Saul, but its one of the things I don't like about it.

sully1983 10-12-2019 08:32 AM

Flat out loved it. Kept me on the edge of my seat thru out it and thought the flashbacks were handled brilliantly (Todd is a mother****ing evil psychopath, damn I hate that guy haha).
Aaron Paul was great yet again and thought Vince Gilligan did such a great job here on giving Jesse Pinkman a good send off.

10/10

WhiteWhale 10-12-2019 09:47 AM

It was nice. It was just a Pinkman epilogue, but he got the closest he could have to a happy ending.

I wouldn't say it was necessary. Some people look MUCH older than they did when the show aired (Todd, Badger) and the story was almost exactly what I expected.

IT's hard to qualify it as a movie because your enjoyment of it won't be in a vacuum. It's really just an epilogue to the show. Well done, as usual. It's not really required viewing, but it does give Jesse something of a much better send-off.

It doesn't change anything. There's no revelation that applies backwards.

It has no impact on what came before. It's just a simple epilogue really.

Chiefspants 10-12-2019 10:21 AM

I loved it.

Sure, it was unneeded fan-service. But is anything superior to Breaking Bad quality fan service? Because that’s exactly what it was. I was riveted from start to finish, and I can’t ask much more from TV than that.

The biggest criticism I’m seeing (which speaks to the overall quality of the movie) is due to Plemons weight gain, but idk, it kind of fits Todd to me. In the year~ Jesse was with Todd,, I could see Uncle Jack and Lydia forcing Todd on a diet to get him to the weight we saw in Felina and Todd doing it because well, that’s just Todd.

Plemons crushed the role, btw. Elevated this to BB quality. Jesse needed a foil and Todd was it.

Third Eye 10-12-2019 11:01 AM

Yeah, I’m in agreement with most folks here. It was completely unnecessary fan service, but it was fun nonetheless. Other than the aging actors, everything felt authentic. Biggest positive? No Skylar.

keg in kc 10-12-2019 11:41 AM

I enjoyed it. Kind of nice to see a low key happy ending to a dark, modern show.

Really sad to read the news this morning that Robert Forster passed away, though.

The problem with Todd's weight gain was that the scenes that he was in were all flashbacks to the end of season 5. They should have tried to make the characters look as similar to that time period as possible. They did a great job making Jesse look the same (for those scenes, as well as all the other ones).

I know people hate Skyler, but man, Anna Gunn did a heck of a job in that role. Especially toward the end of the show.

No question. My disdain was for the character, not the actress.

I can't help but keep noticing the Todd weight gain though. At first I casually thought, "boy he sure added a few pounds." But as the story progresses, it sticks out to me more and more.

Totally. In my head canon Todd’s scenes were 6 months before WW’s return from ABQ - and after pizza time with Jesse Uncle Jack and Lydia put Todd on a diet. Which, Todd was okay with because Todd.

DrRyan 10-13-2019 12:38 AM

Thoroughly entertained. Are people really bitching about Todd's weight gain? That seems like a contrarian beef just to be contrarian...

jjjayb 10-13-2019 01:16 AM

Vince Gilligan really really really knows how to build suspense in a scene. He's a ****ing master at making you hold your breath.

Gadzooks 10-13-2019 01:59 AM

Skyler was a great character, well played by Anna Gunn, but I'm still on the first Mrs. Gadzooks so I couldn't fully comprehend all of the emotions her character implied. (Maybe when I try to move up to Mrs. Gadzooks #2 I'll find out.).
Gus is the character that got to me. I was living that at the time of watching the show. A douche bag trying to make an example out of me. his ending was fantastic until I realized my real life Gustavo was still alive and well...

You seem to be confusing the meaning of the word 'contrarian' for the word 'critical'.

There's nothing contrarian about it. EVERYONE noticed he was heavier. Pointing it out isn't really going against any prevailing narrative.

No revelation. Just what you said. Closure. I think we all wanted Jesse to finally, after all this time, get to live the life HE wanted. I mean he did some ****ed up shit, was far from perfect, but he kinda suffered enough.

That probably would have been overkill. I don't think the point was to drag out Jessie's redemption. Better call saul, on the other hand, has been worth the slow hand.

Watched it last night. It isn't bad, and I don't think it hurt the show's legacy in any way, but ultimately it was kinda pointless. The few seconds of the kid driving away in the El Camino in BB's last episode was more impactful than the story they told in this two hour movie, imo.

BigBeauford 10-15-2019 10:32 AM

Fat Damon took me out just a touch, and I am not sure this was necessary, but it was indulgent to dip back into this universe. The cinematography, writing, and direction is so wonderful. I don't understand why Vince Gilligan isn't involved in big budget fare for hollywood.
