RIP Patteeu

Patteau was my friend. That may surprise some of you, but we were real life friends for 15+ years, I met Gene at my Arrowhead tailgate sometime in the mid 2000’s. It was the only time we ever met face to face. We hit it off at the tailgate. We only knew each other from Chiefs Planet, we were obviously totally opposites in our political views but outside of that subject, we found we had a lot in common.

We decided to stay in real life contact after the game. Over the 15+ years we kept in touch with what was happening in our real lives. We worked together many times on the packages for the troops. He gave his time and not just money to help get those packages out to the troops.

He was so proud of his daughters. He would go on about how smart they were. Both are successful in life now. They live in NY and LA and as he said so proudly, just as conservative in their views as him.

Gene went through a divorce, daughters moving to different states. Moving etc. I shared with him my son’s path, my moves, milestones etc.

And then there was Gene’s health issues. I swore to keep them to myself. Sometimes I wanted to defend him about being short or aggressive towards someone. You would be short too if you only ½ of one lung left.

At the end, Gene needed a walker to move. On oxygen all the time. Have multiple cancers in different places. Paralysis in his right arm so when he posted on the Planet. He was only able to post using his one good arm and hand.

He was still fighting all that to the end. He did not go gently into the night. He went out fighting death with everything he had. I can only hope that when my time comes, I’ll have the courage he showed.

I will miss my friend.

That is a pretty incredible Chiefs Planet exit. RIP. Thanks for the insight.

Rams Fan 05-01-2021 01:03 AM

Oh my gosh. That’s horrible and so sorry to hear. His last post/thread is a way to go out.

RIP Gene.

Sassy Squatch 05-01-2021 01:04 AM

Welp, this was like opening a Cracker Jack Box and having nothing but shit nuggets inside. RIP.

eDave 05-01-2021 01:05 AM

Damn. RIP Patteau. You were my friend.

MMXcalibur 05-01-2021 01:08 AM

When I saw his topic bounce up the past few days, I just wrote it off as typical ChiefsPlanet drama.

.....man, I had no idea he was going through all that.

RIP :(

If I was being as curt as possible, that would be my official response.

Hope/think he knew, I considered him the closest to my symbiote/proxy.

We rarely disagreed on anything important, and what we did disagree with we would probably hash out, ending with both of us conceding at the same time 'eh, you could be right.'

And I can't even calculate the number of times I'd read some thread positively fuming at all the bad takes and poor reasoning going on, . . . then I'd see patteau's avatar, and literally sigh in relief as I read all my own criticisms covered concisely and eloquently.

Rare to find someone who so enduringly and consistently finished each other's, . . . sandwiches.

But then again, what did I know. Didn't even know he was sick. So even though I told him many times, probably didn't even register.

Which brings me back to . . . welp.

tredadda 05-01-2021 01:20 AM

At least he is no longer in pain. It's humbling and inspiring to hear him fight to the very end.

KChiefs1 05-01-2021 01:25 AM

Like I said in the other thread. I’ll miss him because he was one of the best posters on CP. We shared the same political leanings & he was insightful. Glad he got to see the Chiefs win a Super Bowl before passing.

Hopefully he enjoyed reading the other thread.

RIP

Imon Yourside 05-01-2021 01:48 AM

I will miss him and already have been missing his posts.

Titty Meat 05-01-2021 01:52 AM

I dont even know what to say. Tears real ****ing tears that man always had a way of humbling people by saying less including myself. We always gave eachother shit but it was all love. His departure thread allowed me to be the loud mouth goofy asshole I've always been and to be humbled yet again by him silently.

Pat I love you man. I wish I knew what to say so I'll leave it at this. Thank you.

DanT 05-01-2021 01:58 AM

Sad to learn of patteeu's passing. May he rest in peace.

cdcox 05-01-2021 02:07 AM

He was good people, even if I didn't agree with him politically or know him in real life. Seriously a good person that I will miss. I found his obit online. I will leave it to BigRedChief or Rain Man to post it if they think his family would be okay with that. Wish I could have met him in person.

Just Passin' By 05-01-2021 02:21 AM

That's terrible. My best to his family, and may he rest in peace.

Rasputin 05-01-2021 02:52 AM

Man when I saw the thread title I was hoping it was a sick joke to follow up his leaving forever :(

RIP Patteeu.

This is the news I was expecting. Even with the expectation it still sucks. RIP.

Perineum Ripper 05-01-2021 05:40 AM

Damn that ****ing sucks. Always liked pat and enjoyed getting rep from him, normally a pretty good message from him.

Saulbadguy 05-01-2021 06:03 AM

kc rush 05-01-2021 06:09 AM

I remember that tailgate. Having not been a frequenter to DC at that time, at first I wasn't sure why Patteau came up to the group with his hands up, an I'm unarmed pose.

It didn't matter your political leaning at that time, everyone could come together in peace and joy for something we all had in common. Everyone was welcome and everyone had a good time.

DC has become crazier and tries to spill out into the Lounge way to often now.

Hopefully everyone can lay down their arms here and say RIP.

God speed Patteau

NewChief 05-01-2021 06:09 AM

Ouch. I don’t post on CP like I once did, but Patt was one of my favorites. We disagreed on a lot politically in DC, but we always found a way to share some common ground or at least common courtesy for each other. He would often defend me or temper my posts when under attack, and I would do the same for him. Even though we worked on opposite sides of the aisle, it felt like we were allies and, dare I say it, friends even if we’d never met in real life.

RIP Patt. Hopefully there’s blazingly fast high broadband wherever you are now.

Rukdafaidas 05-01-2021 06:12 AM

Wow! RIP Patteau.

siberian khatru 05-01-2021 06:14 AM

😢

Back in the days, long ago, when I used to talk politics on the Planet, Patteeu and I would exchange PMs discussing what was going on in certain threads. He seemed like a really good guy.

Hoover 05-01-2021 06:15 AM

Well this sucks.

Thanks for sharing the incredible story of your friendship forged through this site. Thats very cool and a testament to the good that can come from this site.

ThyKingdomCome15 05-01-2021 06:16 AM

God bless Gene and his loved ones. Seems like a great guy. Life is short, fellas.

DaFace 05-01-2021 06:19 AM

Pat and I had a lot of disagreements in recent years. I'm not entirely sure how he described his political leanings, but he certainly struck me as libertarian with regard to moderating. He hated that DC existed in the first place and hated that we would ban people from threads when they posted politics in the Lounge. And just in general, he basically wanted CP to run with almost zero moderation and was a frequent participant in the "gripe about the mods" thread as a result.

But there's no question that he was a far more level-headed and thoughtful person than the "DC crazies," and I can't think of a time he wasn't respectful with his criticism. A few times he even managed to convince me to see things his way.

I'll always appreciate that. And I appreciate someone having been around here for so long that they literally think about how they can tell everyone here of their passing in a way that is truly unique and yet perfectly "ChiefsPlanet" at the same time.

RIP, Pat. You'll be missed.

Kman34 05-01-2021 06:21 AM

Prayer sent for him and his family.. RIP..

petegz28 05-01-2021 06:21 AM

That sucks.....

Dartgod 05-01-2021 06:21 AM

Wow, I had no idea that I had met him, but the photographic evidence is in the OP. I've met so many CPers over the years. I can't say I had much interaction with him here, other than his disagreements with mod actions. He liked to do that a lot.

RIP Patty...

dirk digler 05-01-2021 06:22 AM

Pat and I had our disagreements in DC but we always respected each other. The cool thing was outside of DC we agreed alot and I always respected what he said. I talked to him a few times about his health issues and I am absolutely heartbroken he has passed away.

RIP my friend.

notorious 05-01-2021 06:23 AM

Marcellus 05-01-2021 06:24 AM

Ugh. That's really sad. RIP, sir. Thanks for helping to make CP what it is.

-King- 05-01-2021 06:38 AM

Wow, RIP.

InChiefsHeaven 05-01-2021 06:45 AM

Wow. When he said he was leaving, I honestly thought it was a joke, because he's such a mainstay of CP. I wish I could have met him, I really enjoyed his posts and rep comments. May the Lord welcome him into His kingdom. May his family find peace. God rest your soul Pat (Gene)...you will be missed.

LoneWolf 05-01-2021 06:49 AM

RIP, patteau. I suggest the DC forum be renamed the patteau memorial forum in his honor. He made that part of CP more civil and palatable.

Beef Supreme 05-01-2021 06:52 AM

Well, shit.

duncan_idaho 05-01-2021 06:53 AM

All joking from his goodbye thread aside, I’m sad to hear this news.

patteau and I didn’t agree on much beyond the awesomeness of Patrick Mahomes II and the Chiefs fandom.

I hope his family is at peace and can find comfort in knowing his pain and difficulties are ended.

Another CP OG gone. Damn.

ChiTown 05-01-2021 07:10 AM

Thanks for posting, BRC. I knew he had some health issues, but no idea it was that bad. May he RIP.

Patteau was a gentleman. He came across as a really nice guy. I never once saw him snap or hurl any kind of insult to another poster.

He seemed like a good man. RIP Patteau

Al Czervik 05-01-2021 07:28 AM

I always enjoyed reading his takes.

RIP Pat

Donger 05-01-2021 07:35 AM

Oh no.... I had no idea he had health issues. You will be missed, patteeu.

Jenson71 05-01-2021 07:39 AM

He was a class act. Thanks for so much, patteeu.

If anyone has a link to an obituary and wouldn't mind sharing it privately, I'd be grateful. For him, I'd even consider a donation to a future Richard Cheney Library and Memorial.

BigRedChief 05-01-2021 07:53 AM

Hey mods can we get a pin please?

Ming the Merciless 05-01-2021 07:54 AM

He was a good dude. I dont know why but I wasn't expecting this. Not sure what I expected to be the reason he left but not this. This sucks.

Prison Bitch 05-01-2021 07:55 AM

It always amazes me how this place affects people in real life. A lot of good people on this site. Best wishes to his friends and family.

wazu 05-01-2021 09:13 AM

Aww, man. Sad to hear, but expected this was the case based on his post. He wasn't the type to let things drive him away voluntarily. I haven't been in D.C. much in recent years. Back when I was we definitely disagreed on things and he was one of the few who didn't get personal about it. Prayers to his family and friends. Wish I'd gotten to meet him. We need to have more tailgates so I can meet a few more of you before you die.

Frazod 05-01-2021 09:18 AM

Bummer. RIP patteeu.
