Late night bullshit: Chiefs haven’t missed with their 1st round picks.

Some mildly interesting stats here.

Assuming Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a Pro Bowler, you have to go back to 2011’s Jon Baldwin to find the last time this team failed to add a Pro Bowler in the 1st round.

2020: RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
2019: traded pick
2018: traded pick
2017: QB Patrick Mahomes
2016: traded pick
2015: CB Marcus Peters
2014: OLB Dee Ford
2013: OT Eric Fisher
2012: NT Dontari Poe

2011: WR Jon Baldwin
2010: S Eric Berry
2009: DE Tyson Jackson
2008: DT Glenn Dorsey & OT Brandon Albert
2007: WR Dwayne Bowe
2006: DE Tamba Hali
2005: LB Derrick Johnson

2004: traded pick
2003: RB Larry Johnson
2002: DT Ryan Sims
2001: traded pick
2000: WR Sylvester Morris

17 first rounders in 21 years. 12 Pro Bowlers, a hit rate of 70.6%.

The Chiefs traded up in the 1st once (Mahomes) and traded down in the 1st once (Baldwin).

They have traded out of the 1st 5 times since 2000.

Hit rates by GM:

Carl Peterson (5/8): 62.5%
Scott Pioli (2/4): 50%
John Dorsey (4/4): 100%
Brett Veach (1/1): 100%

Hit rates by coach:

Gunther Cunningham (0/1): 0%
Dick Vermeil (2/3): 66.7%
Herm Edwards (3/4): 75%
Todd Haley (1/3): 33.3%
Romeo Crennel (1/1): 100%
Andy Reid (5/5): 100%

Prior to Andy Reid, the Chiefs hit 58% of the time.
Since Andy Reid, they’ve hit 100% of the time.

Pairing the Andy Reid streak with Dontari Poe, that’s 6 consecutive Pro bowlers drafted.

Burt Beach is killing it.

Now do the other 31 teams. I bet we're at or near the top.

Ah, Tyson Jackson. The 'Hamas' meltdowns are the stuff of legends.

And I have no way of proving this, but the hot rumor in 2011 was that Haley and the staff wanted Kaepernick, but Pioli overrode everyone and took Baldwin so his "Pro Bowl" QB could have another weapon.

ALSO, fun fact - Ryan Sims has more career interceptions than William Bartee. Bring that up at your next Chiefs mixer. Thank me later for all the sex you get from knowing that little nugget.

No thanks

We even made good decisions with the first round picks in 2016, 2018, and 2019.

2016: traded back for more picks and Chris Jones
2018: traded as part of the move up in 2017 for Patrick Mahomes
2019: traded for Frank Clark, who had 5 postseason sacks in his first year as a Chief to help us win the Super Bowl

It's a damn shame Sylvester Morris got hurt. He wouldnt have fit Vermiels system but he had a fine rookie season.

Dorsey being such a bust still leaves a bitter taste.

Yep. He shouldn't be on this list.

The Chiefs traded down twice in the 1st round. Once for Baldwin and once for Larry Johnson

Other picks may have had worse careers, but that was the worst pick in Chiefs history solely because absolutely no one other than Scott Pioli and that fired Patriot stooge scout thought Jackson was anywhere near a top-10 pick and he went third.

It's one thing to reach on a guy with elite athleticism because you project him being able to harness it (Dion Jordan); it's something else entirely to take a guy who couldn't even make first-team in his conference when he was already a finished product.

It was proof that Pioli had literally no idea what to do other than copy Belichick's script. "Oh, he took Richard Seymour and Ty Warren in the first round. Guess that's the key."

I wasn’t on this site at the time, but I hated the pick too. I wanted Michael Crabtree bad.
