I don't what to think about this other than my initial "wtf" when I saw the news...

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

He was in Zion with the rest of the human survivors watching the sentinels not kill them after the truce, afaicr.

And I really don't know what else is to be told of these character Neo and Trinity. The Matrix can give us all kinds of new stories, but these two in particular? I don't get it.

Not necessarily. He has given every penny he made from the Matrix to charity. Maybe he wants to raise some more money for a children's hospital?
