Watching cinemasins before you watch a movie and having it decide whether you want to see a movie or not is pretty dumb.

I just watched a Chinese movie called Journey To The West on NetFlix. It was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. It's a mythical martial arts comedy.

who says i wanted to watch the movie in the first place? I knew it would not be good.

Saw Snowpiercer last night on my appletv. That was an enjoyable flick. It was obvious some of the budget constraints, but I am sure it was a better watch than Transformers.

It's available on my cable OnDemand and think I might watch it this weekend. The Korean director's other movies I have see an pretty damn good.

It's funny I totally understand what you're saying because I liked it too although it was slow at parts but definitely not worth a 19% For example Man on Fire only got a 39 % but viewers gave it a 90%

On the other hand viewers will give a movie shit ratings and critics will give it good ratings and it actually will be good so go figure.

Just watched They Came Together. Fun little self aware romantic comedy. Has a lull in the middle of it, but a nice date movie.

I never realized that! I thought Man on Fire was great.

I wonder, is there a list of movies that were rated rotten by the critics, but also rated highly by the audience?

ragedogg69 07-14-2014 07:03 AM

There are tons of them. The problem is that people that go to see a bad movie, know what they are getting. So it is more rated for what it is, rather than if it is "good."

Case in point, look up every Tyler Perry movie.

I thought it was pretty good too, but yes, there is a lull, and some of the casting isn't as perfect as Wet Hot American Summer. I do like absurdity when it is well done and David Wain seems to get it right most of the time. The lull in They Came Together happens when he falls too closely in line with the rom-coms he is parodying.

Frosty 07-14-2014 03:43 PM

Still cleaning off the DVR from recent free preview weekends:

The Purge - meh. I liked the premise (though it's a total ripoff from an old Star Trek episode) but it seemed to be missing something. I agree with this review: " it clearly has a lot on its mind, but it never really manages to express it."

The Worlds' End - had its funny moments. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did, though. I think it was worth seeing but I doubt I would ever watch it again.

Red 2 - enjoyable popcorn flick that falls short of the first

Charly - "Flowers for Algernon" was the first book that I remember reading that really affected me. I have avoided this movie adaptation because it seemed that it would be difficult to translate the book to film and I didn't want to be disappointed. Cliff Robertson does a great job of portraying a mentally handicapped Charly without making him cartoonish. I felt the film kind of drifted off track once the love story starts and it ends pretty abruptly, but it is still a pretty good movie. It doesn't have anywhere close to the same impact as the the book did, though.

There are three different individuals. Two [BMc/MIB] resembled each other when they were younger, and they were in two different sketch groups [KitH/Stella]. MIB and Liam McPoyle [on the right, Jimmi Simpson] kind of look alike now, after MIB aged and he lightened his hair for that role.

BMc has never looked like Jimmi Simpson, and no one else from KitH is even close.

The only alternative is Ryan McPoyle [on the left, Nate Mooney], but he hasn't been in any sketch troupe at all, let alone KitH or Stella/State

It's a bad movie that doesn't know what it wants to be. Does it want to have a message? Does it want to be an action movie? Is it meant to be taken seriously?

The plot itself is just terrible. It didn't make sense and it seems like they made up rules and logic as they went along.

I really wish I could have a conversation with someone who liked it especially critics, because I just don't get how anyone could come out of that movie thinking it was good.

I watched it on my cable ondemand and some aspects of it were pretty strong and others not so much. The directing, atmosphere and odd characters were the high points but I also was annoyed with some of the plot issues King noted but to a lesser extent than he. But they are there. As I know you enjoy sci-fi I'd still give it a watch and you might dig it with a little lower expectation going in.

Been rewatching Man of Steel a lot lately. I still don't get people who get turned off by the destruction. Yes, it's destruction porn, but am I the only one who thinks it's realistic? You have Superman facing basically a more powerful and combat ready version of himself, of course there's going to be a shit ton of destruction if they fight in a major city like Metropolis.

Scarlett Johansson‘s “Lucy” pummeled “Hercules” and Dwayne Johnson in a box-office battle of the action heroes and sexes, taking in a muscular $44 million over the weekend.

The Rock’s “Hercules” did better than expected and wound up with $29 million, to beat out two-time reigning champ “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which finished third with $16.4 million. And one of Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s final films, “A Most Wanted Man,” cracked the top ten in its limited debut.

I caught Lockout the other day on TV. What a shitty movie that was. Besides being a low rent Escape from New York set in space, the effects were amazingly awful. At on point, there is a chase scene that suddenly morphs literally into video game level CGI. Also, Maggie Grace is easy on the eyes but a horrible actress.

I also caught Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. The first Ghost Rider is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Despite its myriad faults, it's still a fun popcorn flick (to me). However, the sequel was - bizarre. Cage cranks the mania to 11 and the rest of the film forgets to follow him to campville. It's just terribly disjointed. A real disappointment.

Ghost Rider needs a reboot and a more serious treatment.

Yeah, what is even better was I remember seeing a behind the scenes feature bragging about those terrible CGI action scenes. Also, Guy Peirce was Mr. Exposition. "Your saying the presidents daughter has been taken hostage and if I rescue her, I get my freedom?" Yes, Guy. The first 30 minutes of the movie has just told us that. Have you not been paying attention?

Hell, after seeing Pacific Rim I'd love to see a Robotech movie...

I watched The Raid 2 and the new 300 movie in the last week. The Raid 2 was awesome and more of the same from the first one, only with a bigger scope. 300 was more of the first, with a more compelling bad guy (Eva Green, yowzer) and a less compelling good guy. Entertaining for a rental on a weeknight.

Saw it, and still not sure what all to make of it. Everything was drawing towards a reveal or how it tied together, and then the ending was just poof - there, and I definitely didn't expect that to be the end of the movie. It's almost like the final act was edited out?

Yeah, I've seen some that say it's about body snatchers, some that say, the spiders represent his affair and him thinking of his mistress, and some saying the spiders represented him feeling trapped in the life with his wife.

He was also Green Lantern. So pardon me for thinking it might not be him. X-Men Origins sucked ass, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they started over there.

And it looked like crap mostly because it was crappy CGI. I've never been a comic book reader, so I know nothing about the character, just doesn't look good to me. Seems like forced smart-assed comedy and schtick.

Have you ever gone to the DD website that ties in with the movie. You have to solve cryptic puzzles and whatnot to gain access to additional information about him from sources like classified government files and his therapist's session notes, Roberta Sparrow's scientific journal, etc?

Something that tied in with level 26, I can't remember it all, but it was totally worth the time to dig around and get more information. I'm not even sure if the site is still up and hosted, but given the cult popularity, someone has documented everything I'm sure.

Trés kewl.

Also I read a good editorial / deconstruction on Darko that proposed the theory that Frank the Rabbit wasn't the only "imagined" character / friend of Donnie's, and does a great job of laying out the evidence of this. Maybe this is old news to everyone else?

Spoiler!

Seems like forced smart-assed comedy and schtick.

same dude that is Johnny Storm is also Cap'n 'Merka.
there's no rhyme or reason in this world.

it's all CGI because it was a.....umm.....shit can't think of the right word.....it was a teaser for the powers that be to try to get them to buy into a full length film.

done right, I think it would be very cool. Deadpool is known for talking to the audience or "breaking the fourth wall". in one episode he tried to get the writers of the comic to allow him to go back in time and warn himself about something. LMAO

I think it'd be a pretty cool flick. funny, yet he be killing urrabody up in did bitch!

Fantastic Four? That movie was a shit sandwich.

In my review, I think I actually compared it to if a piece of crap took a crap, that would be FF.

God damn. Normally FMB can find something good in any movie. I cannot remember anywhere in this thread or the old one where he shit all over a movie, much less a franchise. lol

I never saw the second one. But the first one was awful.

I did try to review from the target audience perspective.

The second one was worse. I know it sounds impossible. It is not.

I bought the Donnie Darko DVD a few years ago and they had some bonus features. I remember there was an alternate ending, it was the same ending but flashed to Donnie laying in bed with the bedroom ceiling caved in around him, and he had a pointed 2x4 sticking up through his chest. There was some other things, it's worth checking out if you liked the movie. I only paid like $7 at Best Buy. They also have a director's cut version, which I haven't seen but it has a lot of those extra scenes included. That version DVD box comes in a paper sleeve.
