I always loved Mortal Kombat. Back in the 90s/2000s it was rivaled a bit by Street Fighter and Tekken but over the last 15 years or so I feel like MK just separated from the pack.
It's pretty nonsensical. They've got a washed up action movie star, a four armed dragon-man, a thunder god, sorcerers, and then there's a cop. Not even a special cop, just a literal cop lol I'm not sure I like the idea of this Cole Young dude assuming he's an original character. They'd better do right by my boy Liu Kang, that's all I'll say. |

When I heard about this movie I wasn't even going to watch it and I loved MK. But I saw the first 7 minutes and it drew me in. I think its going to be nonstop action and enough story that it will be good. Its funny how movies like John Wick can have almost no plot and all action and ppl love it but id other types of movies do it ppl rip them to shreds.

Watched it this afternoon. Yes the plot is not going to win any best picture nods and it sucks the main character isn’t a real MK person. But the fights deliver and the fatalities are pretty good. I’d say it’s worth the watch if you’re a fan.

I thought it lacked the charm of the original but I was still entertained. As you'd expect, there was some clunky dialogue, a convoluted story, and the low budget really took some bite out of the costume design and fight choreography. That said, Kano stole the show and the fatalities were pretty awesome.
Also, the idea of the dragon mark and arcana was a fresh take. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it, but I definitely didn't hate it, I know that much. I am a little confused as to what Cole's arcana was supposed to be, though..

Watched with super low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. Fight scenes were fantastic (but JFC it's way too dark, turn you TV brightness up a million), and Kano definitely helped make the crappy plot moving scenes more bearable,

Looks like im in the minority on this one. This is hot garbage IMO. Whoever wrote this, and people like them are the reason you cant get good movies based on videogames.
What's that? I have a metric shit ton of well established, fan favorite characters to draw from? Nah pimpin. Im good. Im going to pull the most boring, basic, b fighting movie cookie cutter character out of my ass and insert him as the main character. Now you would think that if one were to insert an all new character in place of all of the others, that new character should be good, right? Even so cool to the point that fans want this guy in the new games that come out. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Cole Young is ****ing boring. I dont give a shit about him. His "ability" isn't even explained and best i can tell its a combo ripoff of Colossus from Xmen and Black Panther. And the way he learns his ability is the most vile, unearned slap in the face of the whole film.

I checked out at this point. I know theyre setting up for more, but I just dont care. When you relegate big names like Liu Kang and Kung Lao to little throwaway support characters, you better know what youre doing. The film borders on false advertisement, as the hype is all for Sub Zero and Scorpion, and there's probably 5-7 minutes of that in total, and thats basicly the best parts of the story. Visually there's some good stuff and callbacks to the game, but the story is just abysmal. Not even the Johnny Cage tease at the end interests me, because like the rest, he will be a throwaway background character. |

They setup Cole like they setup Alice in the Resident Evil movie. Why is this person ahead of other main characters of the actual series? Why does this character have the ability to do what they do? Why introduce a new character when you will likely have to kill him off eventually so the other characters can shine instead of trying to write your own story that never happened or had the chance of happening in source material? I'll watch a sequel, but if they keep making Cole a big deal, I might lose interest just like I did with the RE franchise of movies after the second one.
Other than that, same thing as everyone else, Kano was awesome, Sub Zero was well done, and when Scorpion and Sub Zero tangle, it's the best fight of the movie hands down. Kung Lao was spot on, Liu Kang was underwhelming and more of a human fortune cookie than a fighter, I don't see how he reaches the heights of what he's supposed to become, especially with Cole in the way. Maybe when they introduce Kitana that'll be his man viagra and he'll bounce back. Jax and Sonya were well played, the other villains are forgettable, with Reiko being a villain in one of the worst acted fight scenes I've ever seen when he goes against Jax, he just screams a bunch and when he takes a hit it looks so damn fake lol. This movie needed to be 20 more minutes of fight scenes for me to say great things about it, but it was good, worth snagging your family's HBO Max credentials to watch it. |
My assumption is Cole will be killed off once JC is introduced.
Also, I'm okay with Goro being killed off, I GUESS. But, I want Sheeva, Kintaro or Motaro in the next movie. |

Yeah Goro being killed like that is absolute bullshit. I would’ve had more respect if they threw us a curve ball and had goro killed all of them right then and there.. now that would’ve been epic and unexpected and great story telling.

My only issue was the whole Goro thing. I don’t think he should have been in this movie at all. Save him for later.

Guys, this was AWESOME! This destroys the first two films from the mid to late 90"s (95 and 97 to be exact). This was a hang your brain at the door and enjoy the ride type of movie. I liked it and can't wait for the next one. :thumb:

It's a tough ask to create a Mortal Kombat movie in this day and age that are worse than Mortal Kombat (1995) and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) but this movie accomplishes that task in spades. The story in convoluted, the characters plain, wooden (Kano being the one exception) and utterly forgettable, and the costumes look like something from a Troma flick from the 80's.
The charm, if you can call it that, of the original movies from the 90's is that these movies helped enhance and expand the storyline from the game. This most recent nostalgia cash grab, and let's be honest that's what this was, neither enhances or expands the story or the characters from the games. What the producers of this movie missed is the fact that the Mortal Kombat games have a deep and expansive story that has been a huge part of the games. You get to play through the story as different characters and be part of the plot as it unfolds. Hell, the writing, plot and voice acting from the story mode from MK 10 and MK 11 are light years ahead of this dreck. I couldn't even enjoy this movie as a "shut your mind of and enjoy mindless entertainment" type flick. It's not a dumb action movie, it insults my intelligence as a long time fan of the franchise. Maybe the next movie, if it gets made, will be better but I have my doubts. And if you have around 12 free hours, here's all the cut scenes from MK 9, MK 10, and MK 11.

I felt like it embraced the cheesiness that is Mortal Kombat though, and didn't try to be something it wasn't. (Jax discovering his Arcano was just so LMAO LMAO LMAO) The lack of a cohesive story and lack of character development, the weird time lapses, odd casting choices (im looking at you Raiden) and several other overlooked nuances were to be expected so i don't really hold it against the movie. The comedy factor (mostly provided by Kano) and the fan service were cool and unexpected. I didn't expect to laugh as much as i did. I thought they executed the spell effects pretty well. I sat there thinking i wish the Warcraft movie could've executed the spell effects this well, it woulda been a much better movie. My one complaint though would be Cole's Arcana. Looks dumb. Rather boring. Built it up and unveiled, basically nothing more than an ugly magic shirt... |
Oh and Im pretty sure Sub Zero and Goro make a return for MKII, assuming they get the green light for the sequel.
Oh and one more thing: I thought i saw Shao Kahn in the trailer, but i dont recall seeing him at all in the movie. |

On a similar note, this entire movie taking place before the tournament was a complaint I read a lot, but it doesn't actually bother me. Canonically, the MK tournament only takes place once every 50 years so you've kinda gotta drag it out a bit unless you want to have to turn over the Earthrealm roster with each movie. Quote:

I'm thinking, if there's a next one, they'll bring in Johnny Cage obv, Sub Zero's younger bro, Kitana and maybe a wildcard like Nightwolf. On the other side I'm thinking we'll see Sheeva to replace Goro, Baraka most def since he's a fan favorite, Bi-Han will become Noob Saibot ("death is just a portal) aaaaand maybe a Shao Kahn teaser near the end.
Honestly, I'm looking at a Wiki of Mortal Kombat characters and like 80% of these people are either ****ing trash or i don't even know who they are. So if they don't choose wisely, they could **** themselves over again like they did going with Reiko and Nitara in this first one. |
