Bottom of the 1st, Lugo on the bump in the rubber game of the series…

Go Royals

PHOG 05-01-2024 01:28 PM

Beat me to it, ignore mine. Sorry didn't see it when I started to post.

dlphg9 05-01-2024 01:35 PM

Mike Sweeney is calling this game isn't he? If so I really really like him.

dlphg9 05-01-2024 01:37 PM

Also I really enjoy this Reggie Miller, JJ Watt, and Luke Wilson commercial.

Fansy the Famous Bard 05-01-2024 01:37 PM

well shit. mlb666 streams are down

dlphg9 05-01-2024 01:40 PM

****ing hell, Mike Trout is soooo injury prone. It's sad as hell. Dude is so ****ing good.

It’s pretty remarkable what he’s doing so far…. And thankfully so, considering here we are again with another day of impotent offense.

Really savvy pickup by KC.

He looked quite good in making the conversion to SP in San Diego last season and only got better as the season progressed. San Diego did a lot of spade work to get him stretched out and now the Royals are getting the benefit of it.

And while he's not a 120 pitch guy, his efficiency will get you 6-7 innings at about 100 pitches. And he's not a fireballer so you don't really have to worry about the max-effort stuff burning him up (though pitchers are pitchers; they're still ticking timebombs).

2/$15 million is gonna be a steal for him when it's all said and done. I mean hell, you can get that much value from him with about 4 good months of pitching over the life of the contract. Guy's nearly half paid-off already...

PHOG 05-01-2024 02:16 PM

Looks like Cy Bassitt so far, no hits thru 5 innings for the Rs.

Apparently Cy Bassitt vs. Cy Lugo. Similar lines right now. Both right around 70 pitches too.

PHOG 05-01-2024 02:25 PM

Isbel with a lead off double.

TomBarndtsTwin 05-01-2024 02:25 PM

Witt gets us on the board!

I'd say you wanna be a little wary about sending him through the top of the Jays order a 3rd time but god almighty those guys have been HORRID this year.

Springer/Vlad Jr and Bichette combined probably have an OPS just barely north of .600. And if you take away the 5 day stretch from Vlad where he had 2 homers and 5 hits, they wouldn't even be scratching .600.

What the hell happened to those guys?

PHOG 05-01-2024 02:26 PM

Way to go Witt!

GabyKeepsMeWarm 05-01-2024 02:26 PM

Bobby!

GabyKeepsMeWarm 05-01-2024 02:27 PM

The sac from Garcia (your leadoff guy) with your best hitter up next is odd. That's awfully passive there. You really think the odds of Garcia getting him over the old fashioned way AND neither Witt nor Pasquantino getting a basehit with 2 more outs to play with were THAT bad?

Just seemed unnecessary.

Got a pitch to drive with that first pitch middle/middle sinker from Bassitt. Dude just missed his spot and you really would've expected that ball to at least turn into an RBI.

But Bassitt let him off the hook with a high fastball while ahead in the count. Tight game, you wouldn't think going up the ladder to set up a likely fly ball out (and sac fly with Witt's speed at 3b) would've been the way to go. And Salvy got on top of it to get the base knock.

Perez shouldn't be getting pitched to there with two RISP and the base open as hot as he is, the manager is an idiot

Yeah, I had ended that post with "Man, it seems like the Jays just play really stupid baseball" but I can't actually claim to have watched them enough to say that and it seemed like unnecessary piling on.

I mean they all but begged him to get that run in. If you're gonna pitch to him at all, keep the ball down and out of the zone. It was just dumb.

I’m inclined to agree, but Ryan and Sweeney are both talking about it and speculating that Garcia did that on his own. If he places it a bit better, maybe he gets himself aboard while moving the runner. Haven’t seen Maikel bunt at all this year, so that was a bit of a surprise.

Perez is as hot right now as I've ever seen him his entire career (hitting .360 with a 1.000+ OPS in a league where offense is down) and you have a literal scrub (Massey, .500 OPS) hitting behind him, John Schneider simply has no clue what he's doing

How long into the season do you think Salvy can keep this up? As the heat comes and he gets beat down surely his production will suffer.

Vlad, that's as strike as strike gets, buddy.

Stop bitching because you're shitty right now. Maybe get fat again? Or skinny again? Or whatever the **** it was you did for that season when you actually lived up to the hype.

Y'know, that ONE season. In your 6 years in the league.

Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Vlad Jr. is fat Casey Kotchman.

Won't be much longer. He's had similar streaks like this before but he'll always tail off in the end. Still could have a great season though (and is a HOFer imo).

Vlad would be lucky if he had a Mike Sweeney-like career at this point btw. He's been one of the worst starting players in baseball for almost two calendar years now. He won't make anything as a FA in 2 years.

Bichette is as streaky as it gets (and appears to be going through one of the worst cold streaks of his career) while Springer is just old at this point and is effectively turning into late career Joe Carter/Vernon Wells for the Jays.

The Jays should be rebuilding.

PHOG 05-01-2024 02:53 PM

Jansen with the solo shot, 3-1 Rs.

KC_Connection 05-01-2024 02:53 PM

And the reason Vlad was good in his one year was because he hit the ball in the air that year. He's never figured out how to do that in any season before or since then. Grounders upon grounders upon grounders

poolboy 05-01-2024 02:54 PM

Vlad just swings at EVERYTHING.

Don't give him anything to hit - he's gonna swing anyway and probably put the ball on the ground.

For one year he was selective and waited for a pitch to drive. So he could elevate it even without massive changes to his swing.

Every year before and since he's just been way too aggressive up there. Maybe if he had some real thunder behind him in the lineup pitchers would come at him again but with Bichette doing dick and the rest of the lineup atrophying around him, there's just no reason to throw him a strike.

It ain't like he's gonna hurt you on the bases.

TomBarndtsTwin 05-01-2024 03:08 PM

Toronto seem scared of playing baseball against the Royals.

If they properly limit his catching duties, splitting time at first base and DH, I bet he could continue this pace.

He was pretty patient coming up as a minor leaguer but he's now become a hacker with no idea what he's doing at the plate. Occasionally will hit a ball 115 MPH on a line but most of them are grounders.

Good at HR derbies though

I’ve been saying this for years. Get a manager in here who didn’t abuse Perez by having him lead MLB in games caught by a decent margin, and his offense would hold up better.

Some real Jordan Walker parallels here that scare the shit out of me.

And both guys seem to completely refuse to do anything about it. At least Walker is only 21 - should be another 4 years or so before I give up on him being worth a damn. Maybe he'll have a Vlad year in there somewhere...
