**** Official 2024 Solar Eclipse Thread ****

A place to share stories, experiences, pics of the 2024 Solar Eclipse.

Did you go outside to view it? Did you travel somewhere to be in the total eclipse? Did you have good viewing or was it cloudy where you were? DID YOU GET LAID?!?!

Discuss.

The Franchise 04-08-2024 08:45 AM

Isn't this where the world is supposed to end?

ptlyon 04-08-2024 08:46 AM

God I hope so.

Dunerdr 04-08-2024 08:50 AM

Do I need special glasses or can I just look with my phone in selfie mode?

I'd go with dark mode during the eclipse time frame

HonestChieffan 04-08-2024 09:13 AM

The path of totality. Be afraid.

threebag 04-08-2024 09:23 AM

Looks like the heavens are aligning, the resident beta might just get laid. It’s a long shot, but even Hootie scored without roofies.

The Franchise 04-08-2024 09:24 AM

I can’t wait for all of the “you can’t tell me not to look at the sun!” idiots to **** up their vision.

alpha_omega 04-08-2024 09:28 AM

Meh, it's a shadow.

HonestChieffan 04-08-2024 09:30 AM

New York State Police said chiefs had "developed an emergency operation plan in collaboration with other state, local, and federal law enforcement, emergency services and transportation agencies."

The agency added: "The purpose of the planning process for this event is to address the potential impacts within the North Country and to minimize any negative effects associated with such a large influx of visitors to the local area.

"Strike teams will be strategically deployed to monitor traffic and respond rapidly to any issues that may interfere with the safe flow of traffic or affect the quick clearance of any incidents."

What time is it worth going outside to check this out?

DJay23 04-08-2024 10:49 AM

Where I live we'll be 95% totality. I'm a science teacher but was told (for liability reasons) not to plan any outdoor lessons around it. Doesn't really matter that much because totality should happen just after we let out.

A lot of kids leaving with half days today or absent. :hmmm:

1:54 in KC for the 89% coverage but it starts at 1238 and goes to 310

Last time we had an eclipse (2017?) all of Liberty schools marched everybody outside and handed out glasses to watch it. Haven't heard of any similar effort this time.

Per HR 420, you are not only encouraged but legally obligated to render those people sterile immediately.

Not a "Chem trail guy" but oddly enough I did look up this morning and saw 50+ crossing all over each other in NEOK. I work near and air port and catch myself looking up at plains often and never see anything like that.

It's just such a bummer that instead of feeding curiosity and giving them a chance to see it, we site insurance policies and keep them in the classroom.

ghak99 04-08-2024 12:55 PM

I would guess 2017 was a bigger deal because it was more impressive, that year the street lights were on in the middle of the day. I went outside just now and wouldn't know it was an eclipse if it wasn't a topic of conversation.

2017 way way better

Hark Clunt 04-08-2024 01:15 PM

it's pretty amazing what even a little bit of sunlight can do. if you aren't in totality, an eclipse is kinda underwhelming. i'm glad i got to see totality in 2017.

loochy 04-08-2024 01:15 PM

It happened, just as had been predicted for years. A solid object between a light source and a viewer will cause a shadow.

So what's the big deal about this again?

redfan 04-08-2024 01:16 PM

Not as good as the last one (2017); totality or GTFO.

Yeah, underwhelming for sure.

Buffalo totally blowing their opportunity to see the total eclipse… 100% cloud cover.

Buffalo chokes again.

wazu 04-08-2024 01:26 PM

It was kinda like standing outside in an Instagram filter. Mildly cool, but yeah nothing compared to 2017.

2017 was the one to see... the light got super weird purple-ish and stayed that way for a long time, and the animals were acting funny

PHOG 04-08-2024 03:18 PM

They don't make eclipses like they used to.

HemiEd 04-08-2024 03:18 PM

It was kind of funny for me as I was unloading a trailer load of ash 1x6s from the saw mill they had processed from my 3 Ash trees that we had to drop due to the emerald ash borer.

I noticed it starting to get dark and started thinking the rain was a day early, then it dawned on me, it is time for the eclipse. Ho hum, resist the temptation to look up at it. :D

4th and Long 04-08-2024 03:53 PM

The solar filter I was using on my cell phone blurred the image. Oh well. I was mildly impressed that it captured a sun spot.

DaFace 04-08-2024 03:58 PM

We were dodging clouds the whole time in SW Arkansas, and unfortunately a big cloud bank moved in about 10 minutes from totality. Thankfully, it opened up just enough for a minute or two to get a view. Not quite as crazy insane as my experience in 2017 (completely clear, blue skies in Nebraska), but still worth the trip.

DaFace 04-08-2024 03:58 PM

The craziest thing, by far, was that there was a super bright, red solar flare during totality - it almost looked like Mars was hanging out right at the edge of the sun.

Solar prominence, not flare, and there were a few of them.

I got outta work at noon today and came home and napped thru the eclipse.

Time well spent in my estimation

RedRaider56 04-08-2024 06:15 PM

We were dodging cloud cover in Austin all day, but we had enough breaks in the clouds to experience the total eclipse. Was surprised how dark it became, saw the flare or solar prominence that poster stated earlier. Nice 10 degree drop in temperature as well.

Glad I got to experience it.
