Paris Roubaix

I look forward to every spring because of the kickoffs of the one day classic bike races, especially the cobbled classics.
If you have never watched the Queen of the Classics, Paris Roubaix, I encourage you to do so. Lots of crashes and it isn't a pure bike race, more like a wresting match.
Go ahead a flame away. Yep, I'm gay for the Roubaix.

Does this Roubaix live near you?

Rasputin 03-15-2022 10:03 AM

Lance Armstrong would win that with one nut.

He never competed in Roubaix, most likely because he is a pussy.
Greg Lemond however did race this classic and placed 4th.

USA has a good chance this year with Quinn Simmons.

Shiver Me Timbers 03-15-2022 01:51 PM

Paris-Roubaix is the class of the classics. Pure grit for 250 km's give or take. I hope the weather is nasty.

Don’t think he gets the distance yet and lacks the endurance to win a hard 250km race but definitely a future contender.

Lance would not have done the business on the cobbles with all the PEDs in the world.

TinyEvel 03-16-2022 09:35 AM

Haven’t watched it in a few years. Are they running gravel bikes now? I remember in the late 80s someone (I think it was LeMond) used a prototype road bike fork from Rock Shox.

TinyEvel 03-16-2022 09:53 AM

Here's last year's finish. Look at the mud on these dudes. Been riding for 90 miles over 6 hours.

Well its that time of year again!
The cobbled classics come to a climax this weekend with the Queen of the Classics the Paris Roubaix.
Last Sunday, the Cobble Classic Ronde Van Vlaanderen (Flanders) was put on its head as Tour de France Champion Tadej Pogacar rode away from the Cobbled Specialist Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. This was a special ride as only 2 Tour de France champions have ever won Flanders, (Louison Bobet (1955) and Belgian great Eddy Merckx (1975)).

Now it is time for the final Queen of them all Paris Roubaix.
Often called the Hell of the North the Paris Roubaix is a special race. Started in 1896 the course has 27 sections of rough, bone-jarring cobblestones await the riders.
Here is a little history on this race.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lSrt__iErX4" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Last year was one of the fastest Roubaix's on record. It was also dry. Fans love a good wet Paris Roubaix and the forecast for this Sunday looks wet!

The only relevant question(s) is; do you still have a boner and is it the original or did you take a break and then re-boner?

Small break in boner activity.
Super Bowl Chiefs Victory-boner fully engaged.
Took a boner break.
Spring bike racing Classics-Boner back on.

Not one but two top ten finishers for the Americans in the Ronde, very nice!
Bring on the pave'!

Balto 04-03-2023 02:19 PM

Reason why they don't use beefier bikes? Seems like common sense doesn't it?

Speed.
Between each sector of cobbles are many kilometers of regular pavement. Heavy beefy bikes/with large tires couldn't keep up. At one point some racers tried shocks but it fell out of favor. Tires do make all the difference in this race as punctures are common especially in the 5 Star Sectors of Cobbles.

redfan 04-10-2023 07:33 AM

Paris-Roubaix never disappoints, what a race!
Too bad for Degenkolb and van Aert, they woulda been there at the end with van der Poel if not for problems.

Graystoke 04-10-2023 08:10 AM

Indeed! This was an epic Roubaix. Fastest on record.
Mathieu Van der Poel and his team ALPECIN-DECEUNINCK tactically executed the perfect race. I thought at first Van de Poel was working much to hard. But his team did the one two punch and secured 1st and 2nd.
Van der Poel's arch rival Wout Van Aert punctured at a critical moment on the 5 Star Carrefore de l'Abre and Van der Poel pulled away.
As always there were many crashes. Former Roubaix winners Peter Sagan and Dylan Van Baarle crashed and DNF.

We can now say without a doubt that the Mathieu Van der Poel will go down in history as one of the best one day classic riders. Monuments under his belt include:
Paris Roubaix-1
Flanders-2
Milan San Remo-1
This kid races to race. His mode is always attack and make people suffer.

Here we are!
Its 2024 and the Spring Cobbled Classics are on!

Last week at the Tour of Flanders Mathieu van der Poel (MVDP) destroyed the field in an epic race. The cobbles were wet and the 6 time World Cyclocross Champion/Current World Road Race Champion showed the cycling world who is boss.
Donned in the Rainbow Jersey (world champ) MVDP and his team Alpecin–Deceuninck made history and secured the second monument of the season.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VFz1J6JLyZ4?si=dgQUBHEz3QxWtajT" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Now it is on to the Queen of the Classics, The Paris Roubaix-The Hell of the North.
MVDP is the overwhelming favorite but this is the Hell of the North and the road, luck and conditions dictate this race.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/X8OR5-26Arw?si=-mdaX_VGAkXrVSrH" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I agree with all race predictions that MVDP is the man to beat.
American Favorites:
Matteo Jorgenson-This dude is on form. Already winning the Paris Nice Race this kid shows he can race on cobbles by winning the semi-classic Dwars door Vlaanderen. He raced well in Flanders but just ran out of steam. This would be amazing if he could win.

P-R is the best of the one-days. Looks like the US has only two riders in this year's, but MJorgenson might have a solid chance. Should be a great one!

Who is the other American? Magnus Sheffield?
I didn't think INEOS released their lineup yet? If it is Magnus he will be working for Gannna.

redfan 04-03-2024 01:00 PM

Riley Sheehan on Israel - Premier Tech; haven't heard of him.

E: Looks like this list is incomplete; only one rider listed for Ineos.
