Report: Chiefs *players* reached out to Dede Westbrook
Worth watching, I guess.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Over the weekend some <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Chiefs?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Chiefs</a> players reached out to free agent WR Dede Westbrook to engage his interest in coming to Kansas City. Meanwhile, both the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Vikings?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Vikings</a> & the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bengals?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Bengals</a> have had preliminary conversations with Westbrook as well. Westbrook was a 2016 Biletnikoff award winner.</p>— IG: JosinaAnderson (@JosinaAnderson) <a href="https://twitter.com/JosinaAnderson/status/1391755280170594305?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 10, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Highlights

Ok...

This definitely needed to be a thread.

4th string for a 1-15 team last year.
|
This team is really easy to root for. If I were just starting to watch and become interested in football, I'd pick up on stuff like this and think, "Man, as far as NFL teams go, the Chiefs are really positive and forward-thinking. What a franchise!"
Yeah, Westbrook isn't that great, but he's worth a training camp flier. |
Sorry guys, my bad. Posting football stuff on a football message board - ****ing stupid of me, I know.
|
Anyways, FWIW, Mahomes' trainer, Bobby Stroupe was liking stuff about it. Given that he and Mahomes are spending most days together rehabbing currently, its fair to wonder if Mahomes is one of the guys in contact.
|
Okay gang 10,000 posts and Westbrook will sign with KC let's GOOOOOOOOO
|
Westbrook's game is the same as Hardman's, except he has a bit more physicality to hold up on the outside.
I wish i knew why he was buried on the Jags depth chart though. I know they have a talented group, but he's pretty talented too. There's a hole in his game that we don't seem to know about. Also, he was targeted quite a bit in '18/'19 (over a 100 targets both years) but failed to produce much on those targets. Have to wonder how much of that was him and how much of that was lousy QB play. He's an intriguing player. |

The prior 2 seasons he averaged. 690/4. He'd be a great fit at WR2/3 if healthy. Can't have enough competition in the WR room. |
Quote:
He was certainly relegated to 4th on the depth chart and barely saw the field prior to his injury. |

Jags were tanking-ish last year as well, I believe. Not pushing anything, just noting that they blew horse nuts.

Westbrook came out of camp buried on the depth chart and didn't look like he was being used the same way as the two years before prior to his injury. |

Chark and Conley were always going to be 1 and 2...and when they invested in Shanault who got most of his reps in the slot, it’s not hard to see why Westbrook’s opportunities dipped in the early stages of 2020. I also believe he missed some time in the “offseason” with an injury. |
I generally like the idea but keep in mind he had some red flags with domestic violence. Normally wouldn't be too big a concern for me except I don't think it's worth bringing this topic up again for a receiver who might barely make the roster.

The character concerns and domestic violence charges are 100% concerning but I think a few posters here are sleeping on Dede's skillset. He'd be a great buy low candidate and I think he instantly pushes Hardman for targets.
Hell even signing him to the roster might give Hardman a little more motivation to elevate his game. |

Why is the OP getting shit on for posting Chiefs related news?

I think we're at the 90 player limit right now, so we'd have to release someone to sign him. Let's see, which camp body would I chose ----

It appears to me, at least at this point in time, that the Chiefs have a clear #1 WR in Ty Hill (Duh!), then a bunch of guys that are really 3's and 4's, in Hardman, Robinson, then a bunch of 4's, 5's, and 6's in Kemp, Sharp and Calloway. I didn't include Powell because he's a complete unknown in the NFL. Maybe he becomes a solid #2 or #3 or maybe he becomes nothing. But a guy like Dede Westbrook would be a nice addition, IMO. |

Well, we just opened a roster spot....

If the Chiefs are going the injured veteran WR/potential reclamation project route, then sign Alshon Jeffery.

Another guy is an actual broke dick. |
TE Sean Culkin was set to make $920,000 if he made the Chiefs 53 man roster. Don't worry, we still have Nick Keizer.

I'm all in on this... come get your ring, Dede
|
With no Chief players named, it seems more like an agent trying to help his client get a deal.
BUT...It might be Orlando Brown. Dede was at Oklahoma for 2015 and 2016. Orlando Brown was at Oklahoma, 2015 as a redshirt and then starting LT from 2016 through 2017. |
A poor man’s Mecole Hardman.

But may well be the better football player Lets get him and create some competition... the receiver room as things currently stand is just too thin for my liking, the season is full of hard knocks and with a little bad luck we could be fielding some real panic time question marks |

I’m all for bringing him in. I really like the idea of WR2 by committee.
Keep 6 WRs: Hill Westbrook Robinson Hardman Powell Calloway Buh bye Pringle |

Seriously, if Veach and Andy think he can compete for a roster spot, why not. It's what Dane said, we have a #1, a draft pick, and a bunch of guys that really are #4-6 receivers. |
