There IS an MCU meta discussion thread. Just sayin.

I think I'm kind of hyped for the Eternals.

It occurred to me as I finished up the MCU canon recently that my parents haven't seen a minute of MCU. I know my dad would love it, and likely mom too, but DEFINITELY dad. But I'm trying to figure out how to sell them on umpteen hours of viewing [they're retired, so that have the time. Mom would probably actually enjoy it more because, left to his own devices, dad binges that History channel stuff. So mom crochets and tunes it out.] while hinting at the big payoffs in the end without spoiling those same payoffs.

Be great to get them to the Avengers Assemble moment knowing they appreciate all that went into it.

I'd suggest to them that they watch all 22 Marvel films chronologically because for all intents and purposes, it's 22 episode "TV" series, with everything culminating in Endgame.

IMO, it's far more enjoyable than catching one of the films here and there because it's easy to miss the McGuffin of the series, which of course is the Infinity Stones.

I watched them here and there over years so when I finally saw Infinity War and Endgame, the impact was greatly lessened. Once I watched them chronologically, everything changed. I couldn't believe the cohesion and while some films were less entertaining (Thor & Thor 2 come to mind), the best films (Captain America: The Winter Soldier & Civil War, along with my favorite, Thor 3) are mindblowingly awesome. And of course, Infinity War and Engame are amazingly well done films and are probably the best of the entire run.

It's also interesting to see how the characters change over the course of the series, not to mention, their growth as actors. Hemsworth of Thor 3 was 100 times better as an actor than he was in the first Thor film. Chris Pratt's growth from Community to Guardians 2 (not to mention, Infinity War and Engame) is palpable.

Anyway, I know it sounds like a Big Ask when there are 22 movies involved but if you pitch it to them akin to a TV series, they might be more receptive.

And once they get into it, well, there's almost no stopping, at least not for me!

:D

I’m jealous. My parents could give two shits about comic book movies.

I saw Star Wars, Empire and Return of the Jedi in theaters, the latter of the two on opening day in Kansas City. I even saw The Phantom Menace on opening night in Century City (I'm sure I've told the story about OJ Simpson that night as well).

But I would trade all of that to have seen Endgame in a theater, especially if I had seen the other 21 movies beforehand in chronological order.

I've seen the fan reaction videos on YouTube and it's almost gut-wrenching to know that I missed out on something so amazing and with people that were just as invested as I became post-release, especially since I believe they caught lightening in a bottle.

I have a difficult time believing that Marvel will be able to replicate the experience of First Avenger through Endgame again.

We saw both. Infinity War and Endgame both were amazing for very different reasons. Infinity War....the entire theater sat silent when everyone started turning to dust. You could tell that most of the audience had no clue that shit was about to go down.

Endgame? Fuuuuuuuuuuck. Shit broke out in applause and screams when Steve held Mjolnir for the first time and then again for Avengers Assemble. It was crazy.

The only thing I’ve seen rival it in experiences was watching the first Jackass in theaters. It was non stop talking and laughing that made the experience great.

IMO they won't, and in spite of their best efforts I think it's already going downhill from a creativity standpoint.

There will be moments, as WandaVision has already proven, where they recapture the magic. But yeah, as an arc, most likely not.

Damn, I figured that you would have seen that in theaters when it opened up as much as you are into Marvel and the movie industry. I saw it in theaters on the Thursday before opening night and again at downtown Disney the next night. It was just as crazy as all those YouTube videos. It’s hard to imagine that they will ever be able to build a story with that much hype again.

I have seen every movie in theatre. For me the best fan moment was avengers assembling through the portals. Tied with cap and the moljnir.

I have a feeling we will see alt reality cap and Tony. We need them for avengers vs X-Men.

If they can pull off X-Men correctly they can. They just need to not Hugh Jackman the franchise. And stay away from dark Phoenix. Keep that shit shelved forever. Hated it the cartoon, and both movies.

Shit. I don't think majority fans need a intro movie either. Give them highlights in other movies and go.

And do the sentinels correctly.

Gravedigger 05-10-2021 11:02 AM

They likely need to touch on the Phoenix at some point considering how much of a backstory it is for the X-Men and Jean Grey in particular, who in turn is such a staple of the X-Men universe in and of herself. I think the main errors of The Dark Phoenix movie was Sophie Turner's lack of acting prowess, to become a crazed alternate personality that was so different from Jean Grey, I never thought they really setup either of her personalities well, and it was more Turner's role in GoT that was a star power, hot name move more than anything. Also the ending confrontation after the train was shit as well and they didn't really stick to source material with those aliens being the big bads. It's a saga that can't be brought down to one movie length, it would need to be something in the vein of Infinity War and Endgame, spread out over at least two movies with better acting and writing. That's why these castings are so crucial for Marvel coming out the gate, ,they can't just nail half of the characters and then wiff on the other half like Fox did. They don't need to touch on it until after the third movie I feel, setup your characters with real world issues, here on earth, then go cosmic later on way down the line if the movies are successful and lead you down that path. Marvel slow played it and did it right where as DC rushed everything, I have faith in them to do X-Men right and I'm really looking forward to seeing who they get, I just want them to go all out 90s cartoon with it, with Sentinels, Genosha, Gambit, Sabertooth, Rogue, the whole thing. If they can introduce Rogue, in the upcoming movie The Marvels, where Rogue saps Captain Marvel's power and Ms. Marvel has to step up and carry the banner to save the day, that'd be an insane way to start introducing the X-Men, it would also give them a credible way to sideline Captain Marvel instead of just putting her off planet while Thanos lays waste until the last 30 minutes of Endgame.

unlurking 05-10-2021 11:47 AM

Yeah, I never got the Sophie Turner love. She was able to play the whiny, petulant, selfish, bitch you loved to hate really well, but I've yet to see her do anything beyond that.

DaneMcCloud 05-10-2021 12:13 PM

The biggest issue I can see with Phase 4 is keeping the audience interested in characters introduced in Shang-Chi, The Eternals, Captain Marvel 2, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight.

Captain Marvel, outside of the Skrulls, was very meh. I am very much looking forward to Moon Knight and Secret Invasion but have little interest in Kate Bishop and the other “Young” superheroes planned.

Tom Holland isn’t signed beyond No Way Home, which is disappointing. I don’t know if that’s planned because they’re moving forward with another version of Spider-Man but if so, it’s going to be a tough sell for me because Holland was absolutely pitch-perfect as Peter Parker.

Captain America 4 is a hard no for me in theaters.

Captain Marvel was OK till they went full reerun with her powers at the end. The Ronin showdown was pathetic.

I’ve said forever that I’ll give them the rope to hang themselves.

But I don’t really see how they can match what they did.

That being said I had no idea when I watched Iron Man that they could do what they did.....soooo. I basically have nothing to add.

I’ll watch the properties until they **** it up. But it’s beginning to teeter some.

I’ll for sure watch Cap 4 but I’ll probably check reviews here before I go.

Baby Lee 05-10-2021 11:22 PM

The one Marvel property I got into more than anything was Secret Wars. Got into it through Wolverine and The Thing [along with FF]. Had all 12 issues and pored over them like the Torah. Has there ever been scuttlebutt on giving that property the full treatment?

Probably the best movie experience I've ever had in a theater is when Mjolnir finally ends up in Cap's hand. I've never been in a theater when people screamed or clapped. Seeing both myself & my kids get so wrapped up into that moment was something amazing.

Much like Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Tom Holland IS Spiderman to me.

This has been the plan all along. We saw how Monica Rambeau obtained her powers in WandaVision while Ms. Marvel has been in the works for years as well.

From my understanding, Marvel is focusing on the next generation of superheroes, including Ms. Marvel, Wanda's children, Kate Bishop, Iron Heart's Riri Williams and so on.

I heard some talk of doing a West Coast/East Coast Avengers team but I haven't heard anything about it moving forward quickly.

Good. She did a shitty job with Captain Marvel. Not only did they **** up the Captain Marvel storyline by making Captain Marvel a female, Larson gave the character about as much personality as a brick with tits painted on it.

The blame lies with Marvel and Captain Marvel's directors, not with Larson herself, who is an Academy Award winner, Golden Globes winner, BAFTA winner, SAG award and Emmy Award winner.

She's one award away from the coveted EGOT, which only 16 people have ever achieved.

Yea. She’s a good actress. Just a bad fit for that part.

morphius 05-12-2021 12:45 PM

It'll be hard to imagine them doing it at the scale they were able to do with the last arc without it looking forced or coming off as a repeat. I expect a few bigger misses this time around.

I'd probably agree with that. But there was some weird shit going on. I presume you watched the interviews leading up to IW/EG. Shit was weiiiiiiird man. I think maybe she was trying to be funny, but it was bad. The weird thing is that she has been fantastic in other non-MCU interviews I've seen.

And that's also to say that there were no charismatic performances in the show. SLJ of course was worth the watch. Clark Gregg, in his limited role was pretty good. Mendelson, IMO was really REALLY good in the movie.

And even after getting blasted for Captain Marvel she didn't change much in IW/EG, not that she was in it enough to matter that much.

It's like she became a different person when she joined the MCU. It's weird.

All that being said, I'm rooting for her to turn it around. As much as I've enjoyed the MCU it's in my best interest to root for their success, and her being written out or marginalized is not optimal.

I have never seen an interview with Brie Larson, whether in print or video. I've seen a few people here comment on her "controversial" remarks but I honestly have no idea what she said.

From my perspective, Captain Marvel was a bad fit for the entire Infinity Saga. She has too much power, which again, was derived from an Infinity Stone, so there's nothing much for her character to do. It's kind of like the Superman conundrum: He's impossible to kill or injure, unless he's exposed to Kryponite (which is really the absolutely dumbest comic deterrent of all time. I mean seriously, I can buy into the idea that Jor-El built a ship capable of light speed and that Kal El was able to travel billions of lightyears across the universe in 5 years but there's no way that a piece of Krypton could travel at light speed, let alone, across billions and billions of miles in 5 years).

Anyway, her backstory in the MCU was lame. After she was immediately granted super powers, she was able to control and master them in a very short period of time. She was almost able to defeat Thanos by herself (as was Wanda) and when a character is that powerful, they're just boring, IMO, unless they bring a certain humanity to the character, which Wanda did but Carol Danvers didn't.

Captain Marvel 2, whose subtitle is now The Marvels, looks to pass the torch from Danvers to Kamala Khan, so it doesn't look like Larson will be around much longer, anyway.

I just hope Kamala Khan's backstory is far more interesting on screen than Danvers.

I watched this over lunch and I guess I'm missing something because I didn't sense that anyone was uncomfortable. It seemed to me that they all had some "Inside Jokes" from their time filming Infinity War and Endgame back to back but I didn't sense any real conflict or dislike.

It's really tough to do interviews with actors when they can't speak about their films due to an NDA and it's even worse when watching without music or highlight clips.

It's kind of like watching an NFL game on the NFL Network. No underscore, no music bumpers when exiting and returning from commercial break and no music under in-game highlights. To me, it's just weird.

Endgame and Infinity War were filmed together, so her part in Endgame was actually filmed before Captain Marvel. I think it might have even been filmed before the script for Captain Marvel was 100% nailed down.

There are always changes to dialog when filming but not to the plot or overall story arc, which Marvel plans out years in advance.

The most cringe worthy person in that interview was the guy conducting it.

Yes, Larson had the idiotic take that she was breaking new ground as a female to lead a franchise (Sigourney Weaver says, hi - and Jennifer Lawrence has done it recently as another example) but, that’s about the only problem with her part of that interview. IMHO.

Jackman while great. Ruined the franchise. Every movie became about him. Storm, Cyclops and the others all became shit characters so they could put Jackman's Logan to the forefront. Wolverine should be treated like Hawkeye.

X-Men is about the team. All are legendary. Endgame type of movie should be how they start.

I agree on the 90s style vibe and crew. Give me the blue and yellow squads.

Saying that. I think they should cast Zach Efron as logan.

I wouldn't sideline him quite as much as Hawkeye, but yeah. Fox could never get past the idea that X-Men was about Wolverine, and Xavier vs Magneto. There's no reason Magneto needs to be in every movie. And they wasted so many characters, just in general. Big ones they could have done more with like Storm and Cyclops to be sure, but also smaller characters they just pissed away in half-ass cameos. Psylocke. Gambit. Even Deadpool, before they fixed it.

X-Men is about the team. All are legendary. Endgame type of movie should be how they start.
I agree with the first part, but I don't think you can jump into something like Endgame. So much of what works in that movie depends on everything that came before. The impact of seeing 40 superheroes team up in the end isn't the same if you didn't have the history with them. But I do think you could build up to another Endgame-level event with the just the X-Men. The bench of characters is that deep.

I’m very excited to see what they can show us for phase 4! I’m expecting Wakanda Forever will be a bit of a tear jerker. I’m also very excited to see the MCU dipping their feet into some different styles and genres as well. As a huge fan of both superheroes and horror films, I’m pumped for “Multiverse of Madness”!

Speaking of superheroes and horror, I’m getting excited for the What If? stories. Pretty sure there’s a marvel zombies and if done properly might be a damn good story.

Jesus **** dude. Is your return key broken? Ain't nobody gonna read that wall of text.

Maybe I'm just a little bit burned out on Marvel. I thought most of the movies prior to Endgame were very good (Thor 2 was sort of a miss and Iron Man 3 didn't do anything for me). I found Endgame disappointing because they had to do the lazy time travel plot device which has been overused to death. The Spider Man movie afterwards was just underwhelming. I think it's like Star Wars/Star Trek/SuperMan/BatMan/etc. I'm just bored by rehashing of the same old thing with big CGI Monster fights and uninteresting characters.

Do we really need a movie about Hawkeye? Or Black Widow? Another Black Panther with a new actor?

As long as people keep going to them, they will keep making them.

I'm part of the older crowd; I didn't read comics so all of this was new and interesting.

By endgame. I mean the feat of movie, not the quantity. I dont think most audiences need a build up. Have it start with the core and end credits of blue and gold squads.
