Less than a day after we first learned that half of the Chiefs’ preseason schedule was to be cancelled, the situation has become even more fluid.

On Wednesday afternoon, we reported that in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL was preparing to announce the cancellation of the first and fourth preseason games for each team.

For the Kansas City Chiefs, this would mean that the home games against the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers set for August 15 and September 3 would be cancelled — leaving the Chiefs two road games against the Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys on August 22 and August 29.

But almost immediately, there was word that when necessary, the schedule would be equalized so that each team would play one preseason game on the road and one at home. But which one of them would become a home matchup remained unknown.

It’s not even 24 hours later, and the situation is now even more unclear.

On Wednesday evening, Denver Broncos NFL Players Association (NFLPA) representative Brandon McManus tweeted that teams would likely be playing even fewer preseason games — and perhaps none at all.

This was amplified with an NFL.com report.

There has been no decision on the upcoming NFL preseason as some members of the NFL Players Association are in favor of playing no preseason games ahead of the 2020 NFL season, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday evening.

Previously, the expectation has been that the NFL would cut the four-game preseason schedule to just two games, however, the NFLPA has yet to sign off and there are some within union leadership who continue to question whether it’s a smart move to play any preseason games at all, Garafolo and Pelissero added.

But it is unclear whether the union actually has a say in the matter. According to an article from Washington Post NFL correspondent Mark Maske, the league doesn’t need the NFLPA’s approval — and is holding firm on its plan.

The league can set the length of the preseason without NFLPA approval, however, and does not intend to budge from its two-game plan even if the union seeks further reductions, according to a person familiar with the NFL’s planning, who said, “It will be two [games].”

NFLPA player representatives are reported to have scheduled a conference call for Thursday evening to discuss the preseason schedule — and hopefully, that will result in further clarity.

And clarity will be needed... soon.

According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on Wednesday, the preseason schedule is far from the only matter that remains undecided.

The NFL and the NFLPA continue to discuss protocols for reopening of team facilities, testing programs and other matters related to playing amid a pandemic. Sources close to the discussions say there is no hard deadline for a finalizing of protocols, but that if training camps are to start on time (July 28 for all [but the Chiefs and Houston Texans]), there’s a sense on both sides that an agreement needs to be reached by the end of next week.

One reason for this is that there’s a chance the league will ask players and team personnel to quarantine at home for two weeks before leaving for camp. This doesn’t even account for newly imposed rules in states like New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts that ask people coming from states where coronavirus cases are spiking to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival.

This is further complicated by a report from Mike Florio of NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk, which said that rookies would be initially reporting on July 19.

Per a league source, the NFL’s proposed calendar has rookies reporting for a coronavirus test on July 19, with rookie conditioning beginning two days later, on July 21. That same day, injured veterans would have their coronavirus test, with conditioning for injured veterans starting on July 23. Veterans would be tested for the virus on July 26, with veteran conditioning starting along with the launch of camp on July 28.

All of those dates would (presumably) be moved up three days for the Chiefs and Texans, whose camps are set to begin July 25 in order for them to be ready for the opening game of the season on Thursday, September 10 — which would give the league and the union even less time to come to an agreement on these issues; it could mean that final decisions might have to be made in the next few days.

Unless, of course, the league decides to exercise one of the options it built into the 2020 schedule, beginning the season with what would have been Week 5’s scheduled games on Thursday, October 8 — and moving the games from Week 1 through Week 4 to the end of the season. That would cause the Chiefs begin the regular season with a road game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, October 11 — and end it against the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots sometime in January.

We will keep you posted.

You know what's coming next

BWillie 07-02-2020 01:23 PM

Move the regular season up. Eliminate playoff spots except for the Top 4 in each conference. Give it a go. As it is, we are absolutely going to get demolished this fall by this thing.

It's not that they aren't useless it's that if you can't play in August the odds of playing in November are terrible.

petegz28 07-02-2020 01:28 PM

Why even bother with the season? Once one player tests positive it's over anyway.

Kman34 07-02-2020 01:30 PM

Well if there’s no preseason why start camp in July?? Put it off till August...

Chiefshrink 07-02-2020 01:35 PM

No football fellas !! Emotionally prepare yourselves. Time to improve your marriages and SO relationships !!:D

CaliforniaChief 07-02-2020 01:35 PM

Well if they have to cancel the whole thing, we'll reign as SB champs for another year.

That would still REALLY Suck though.

Players have already tested positive.

Halfcan 07-02-2020 02:06 PM

So teams will have to roll in cold with no preseason games and try and beat the SB Champs at Arrowhead- good luck with that.

Yeah but they will have recovered before the season starts. Once one player tests positive during the season they will shut it down.

A lot better chance with no fans for sure.

Deberg_1990 07-02-2020 02:57 PM

Just cancel 2020. Wait until Mahomes develops a Covid vaccine in the offseason.

BigRedChief 07-02-2020 03:09 PM

Its just not going to happen. Maybe if we didnt open up too fast, everyone wore a damn mask we'd got a another Super Bowl.

Well I guess we are champs for two years........:sulk:

At least Tom Brady will be a year older.

4 games cancelled...16 to go

IMO the only question is will the NFL do this voluntarily or does a judge issue an injunction?

Once the NFL 2020 season is cancelled I anticipate ALL US sports leagues/organizations to suspend operations until at least July 2021. (MLB may not be back until 2023 or 2024 due to an anticipated lockout/player strike in 2022). NASCAR may be able to continue because most involved always wear stuff that would protect them.

Blame the deep staters in DC for ginning up the lethality of this virus for shutting down the economy and the NFL. They want Trump OUT and a broken economy is the best way to do it and they do NOT want happy Americans watching the NFL,MLB or the NBA whatsoever which threatens this.

I think the owners really make the call and how do they make $$ having to still pay the players with very little revenue coming in on Home games with no fans? Yes they have the TV contracts but........ if you are an owner.......

Chief Roundup 07-02-2020 04:44 PM

If we don't have at least 9 games, from what I have heard, then the season will not count on accrual of years of service toward FA status and contracts.

Demonpenz 07-02-2020 04:56 PM

Should have done a FULL SHUT DOWN and FULL MASK, instead we are going to bumble **** around for 3 years.

The NBA had Major League soccer go down and try the bubble and now like a million soccer players have tested positive.

FAKE VIRUS! LMAO

Why Not? 07-02-2020 06:52 PM

Honestly they should just rip the band aid off now. Call off the season and aim to really attempt to get back to normal in 2021.

At the end of the day, the mortality rate of COVID may fall below INFLUENZA and other recent pandemics.

Everyone getting it, but fewer and fewer dying. Mortality rate is plunging.

Does anyone think 2020* is great? Even if everyone is safe and you have no money issues, a lot of fellow citizens are.

If you like sports..... this year*, and if your a Chiefs fan with a fully loaded, playmakers in their prime team ready to kick butt and take names.... it really sucks.

You definitely need a shrink.

The NFL could just choose to not care. I'll be honest, if I was a player I would sign whatever they want me to too be able to play. If t means Ill be getting a paycheck I'm in. The risk for the players is so so low. The coaches is a different story, at least for some of them.

It’s just like a regular flu now though it’s more contagious.

That is probably the only way to go for the NFL.

Go out and sign every NFL-level guy on the streets and have separate training camps to get them in shape. Start the NFL season, any team that loses a player to Covid-19 is allowed to put that player on a "sick list" and switch a player in from the training camp group until their player gets healthy. Training camp guys get paid more while they are on an NFL roster.

The same players must move off/on during sick designation to prevent Teams from rotating guys around looking for better training camp players.

This will allow teams to survive Covid-19 unless a starting QB or uber player gets sick.

I think this is the best way the NFL can survive with Covid-19 and play decent football.
