Clark Hunt: The Chiefs Will Begin Contract Negotiations W/Mahomes This Summer

Chiefs to Begin Extension Talks with Patrick Mahomes This Summer The Chiefs plan to begin contract extension negotiations with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes this summer, chairman Clark Hunt said Wednesday evening. “The negotiations are something we’ll be getting into this summer,” Hunt said on a Facebook Live event with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “But what he has said and what we’ve said, both sides is, he wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that’s our mentality as well. We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that’s what we’re going to be shooting for.” Mahomes is currently set to count around $5.3 million against the salary cap in 2020 on the fourth year of his rookie contract, but the expectation is he’ll sign a long-term extension and become the NFL’s highest-paid player given all he has accomplished early in his career. Mahomes, 24, was named the NFL MVP in a spectacular 2018 and followed that up by leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl title in the 2019 season, during which he threw for 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions in 15 games in the regular season. Hunt knows as well as anyone what Mahomes means to his organization. “In terms of special qualities, the thing that really struck me in 2018, the first year that he became a full-time starter for us, was his leadership ability,” Hunt said. “We knew he had these special physical gifts. We had seen him on the practice field. We’d seen the no-look throws. We had seen the 70-yard bombs, all that stuff – I’m not sure we had seen the left-handed throw but maybe. But anyhow, we knew we had that. But the pleasant surprise was what a great leader he was at age 23. An NFL locker room is a very difficult place to come into as a young player and lead, but it was very evident that the entire team was looking up to him in his first year as a starter – and of course that carried over into this past season. “He has a tremendous amount of humility going back to what I said about leadership qualities. So he’s very humble on one hand and very competitive on the other and his teammates all respect him and want to play for him and with him.” |

Probably after the Chris Jones extension gets done

I have trouble believing they'll get it done with all the uncertainty about next season, but fingers crossed.

Offer Mahomes naming rights to the stadium "Mahomes Stadium at Arrowhead Field", 5% ownership of the team, and a cap friendly contract. Or just make him the richest player in the history of the NFL averaging $40 to $45 million per on a 10+ year deal. Regardless, nobody in the front office gets more than 6 hours sleep until a long term deal is hammered out.

When teams "begin" negotiations of this magnitude, which side usually fires the first shot? I'm thinking neither side really wants to put their dollar figure out there first, even if they are thinking a similar number.
|
just give him all the monies

And why would he? The guy is being talked about as the greatest NFL player, ever. |
His contract will go a long way in how much we win.

Pay him $1 million a year and give him a $40 million a year advertising contract for all the Hunt Family sports and business franchises.

He's currently under contract for $5.3 million in 2020 and since he's earned two Pro Bowl berths in his first three seasons, he'll be paid the average of the Top 5 QB's for his 5th season, which will equal the Franchise Tag number for 2021. If he's Franchised for the 2022 season, the Chiefs are allowed to negotiate a new contract with him until July 15th, 2022. That said, I seriously doubt that either side will allow the negotiations to continue for the next 2 years. |

My concern is more about lost league revenue this year and the impact on the salary cap. |

I like that guy Mahomes
|
4 years 180 million dollars 120 million guaranteed is my prediction.

Quote:
There have been all kinds of suggestions for teams to make up lost revenue due to the elimination of fans in stadiums, from covering seats with advertisements to ads and sponsorship on player's jerseys. I doubt they'll be able to fully cover $100 million per team in lost revenue but they may be able to soften that hit substantially. |

Yup, back that baby up |
Now THIS is a guy that could demand what he wants and change the landscape of contracts. Not that turd Dak
|
If locking up Mahomes long term means that we lose Jones, then so be it. I'd love to have both, but everybody can't be the richest ever at their position and still win a team sport. It would be cool as hell to know for certain the cap will jump enough to sign both and keep the team competitive. But, this damn Covid crap has the entire country in uncertainty.

Howcome elite QBs never test the market like other players do?
|
I actually think Mahomes’ deal is going to cap QB salaries for a while. Teams won’t simply say it’s your turn to get paid so here’s your deal a bit higher than Mahomes. He is so far beyond everyone else in ability and accomplishments that the argument won’t exist from players, GMs, or fans that the next QB should get more than the previous guy, Mahomes.
|
You aren't going to hear leaks or other garbage like the abortion going on in Dallas.
This deal will get done, it will be expensive, but clean. |

**** it.
I legit want them to offer him a fixed percentage of the salary cap every year. If it goes up, so does his contract. Give him a true "career contract" |

Mahomes agent has said repeatedly that Mahomes wants to win and prioritizes winning over maxing his earning potential.
Mahomes passed on many endorsement deals as a rookie and even in his second year so he could focus on the game. He’s not going to take a stupid low contract, he will be the highest paid player in history, but they will structure his deal to be able to be flexible every year and he’s not going to demand a crazy amount. My prediction is and extension of 4/150 with 90-100m fully guaranteed. That makes him signed the next 6 seasons. 4 more titles in that time span. |
I bet the talk to Mahomes earlier this year and came to an agreement about not doing his new contract until later. That way no one gets upset and everyone is on the same page.
good job. |

PMII has said many times that his agent is doing the negotiating and he's just focusing on football. Lee gets paid based on what Pat makes. There is no way he signs for less than $40 mil/year. He will probably be closer to $45 than $40. |
The Chiefs have potential to be a dynasty in the making.

It's so great that even knowing this contract will be massive, I have zero fear of it. I feel like the day Mahomes signs an extension will be a day of celebration. What a time to be alive.
|
Mahomes is different. Isn’t cocky but confident. He’s humble and says all the right stuff. Wouldn’t shock me one bit for him to take a slight hometown discount of roughly 37-38 mil a year

I think Pat should get somewhere between 30-33. It would be a fair price to both him and the team. They can manipulate the numbers by throwing in bonuses and incentives. You pay him 37-40 and that makes it tougher to sign guys of the likes of Breeland or Pennel.
|
Quote:
Pennel signed for Veteran Minimum, so the only way the Chiefs wouldn't be able to afford a player like him is if they gave Mahomes something like 75% of their cap. |
Amazing that $50 million AAV would be a bargain for Pat
|
Quote:
It’s either Pat at a huge salary or an average QB with more money. We all know what option we’re taking. |
Quote:
Or did Brady tell his agent, "You work for me. I don't want to be the highest paid QB. Ever. Not even for a single season." I'm not saying that's what Mahomes will do, only that if that's what he wanted, he would make it work. The whole, "The agent gets paid a percentage of the contract..." thing is great and all, but in the end if the player doesn't like the deal put in front of him, he won't sign the contract. |
I think we will be pleasantly surprised.
It's been that way since day one with this kid. Still feels surreal, almost like a dream that's too good to be true yet still gets better. League MVP SB MVP Defending. World. Champions! |
I don't think a deal is possible without Chris Jones signing first unless the Chiefs cut about 10+ mil off their current cap number. Whatever deal he agrees to, even if team friendly, is going to drive his numbers up this year big time.
I like Chris Jones a lot but I think they messed up by not trading him. |

According to sam mellinger the negotiations have officially started.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The most anticipated contract negotiation in NFL history is underway between the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.<br><br>The result will be a deal unlike any other, with potential new precedents that could change future talks. <a href="https://t.co/xzPBWqx5pi">https://t.co/xzPBWqx5pi</a></p>— Sam Mellinger (@mellinger) <a href="https://twitter.com/mellinger/status/1266011665260216321?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 28, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |

How about 18%(of cap)+ performance bonuses each season for Mahomes?

I think we see something more like Goff's contract, which let's you move money around from signing bonuses and roster bonuses and keep the huge cap hits from nailing you right away. You're always pushing the enormous cap hits down the road. |

So we need to fly some banners, get social media activated to get Brittany a big chain of workout centers/gyms so Mahomes can have generational changing money and concentrate on just playing football. |
Quote:
At the time of signing their recent contracts, Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers were both around 18.5% of the cap in the year they signed. That's a lot more than the 15% you claim is so outrageous. Matt Ryan is 8th in average salary and he is getting $30M per year, which is currently 14.9% of the cap. At the time Matt Ryan signed his deal in May 2018, it was about 17% of the 2018 salary cap. You should hope like hell the Chiefs are actually able to get Mahomes on a 15% cap salary. That's a massive discount compared to his actual value. |
20% of the cap is completely fair for Pat. That would put him at $37.6 million this year which sounds about right
