It also earned Nolan his first directing Oscar. Nolan’s acclaimed arsenal of work also includes “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception,” and “Interstellar.” |
Nolan? Caine? Debicki?
I'm in. |
Robert Patterson's turning into a star, it would appear. Suddenly he's in all this major stuff. Reminds me a bit of Chris Pratt getting big out of the blue round about zero dark thirty.

Big time directors like Christopher Nolan for example are taking notice and I bet you he put in a good word to Matt Reeves that he'd make a good Batman / Bruce Wayne. Oh and I love the title of this upcoming Nolan film (Tenet) . Simple and cool sounding . The cast is shaping up really nicely and I love the idea of big budget international espionage . Easily my most anticipated film for next year . |
Supposed to be a 6 minute preview of this movie attached to Rise of Skywalker IMAX prints.
|
I'm a Nolan fanboi. In.

Goodness, another epic.
|
WB better not ever let Nolan go. Give that man a blank check and let it ride
|
Goosebumps. Nolan is God.

In Nolan I Trust!
Good lord this looks awesome! |
That might be the most exhilarating two minute trailer I’ve ever seen.
I am all the way in on this. |
I'll definitely see it but yeah I have no idea wtf I just saw in that trailer
|
Didn’t realize Denzels son was the star of this.
He was really good in BlackKlansman |
That was fun and did a good job not really giving away too much

There's supposed to be a 6 minute prologue playing in front of some Star Wars showings in IMAX, and it's supposed to be epic.

Superpowers develop time travel technology and aim to erase each other from history?
|
My guess is that it will get punted until summer 2021
|
Trying not to be too dramatic, but the extended trailer before Jedi was some of the most amazing cinema I've ever witnessed.
It was like seeing Blade Runner for the first time. |
No way this gets released in a month. They’ll wait a year and make a ton more money.
|
What’s the word on the LA streets Dane? Is this going to open in July or not?
I’m having a hard time believing enough movie theaters are going to be open by then to support it. But the movie industry desperately needs some fresh product out to drive audiences into seats. A few of my local theaters around here are open, but business is extremely slow. |
I need this movie NOW! But seriously L.A. needs to lift their stay at home order for this to keep its release date. LA is the biggest money maker in America for movies. Without it, this will most likely get pushed back.
|
New trailer just dropped. It’s now says just “Coming Soon” instead of July 17th.

I'm trying to theorize a little here. What's the significance of the word "tenet?" It's a palindrome. It's spelled the same way forwards and backwards. A reference to the time inversion? The word also ends where it begins, in a sense, at t.
How about the definition? A tenet is a principle or belief. The woman in trailer 2 around 2:10 says, "The people of the future need us. They need a tenet." I'm not sure if she says "need a tenet" or "need tenet." If it's the former does she mean it literally? The people of the future need a principle/belief? Too similar to Inception? Or does tenet refer to a person? Technology? An organization? The Russian is the bad guy I take it? Damn, I haven't been this pumped for a movie in a long time. |
That was a great trailer! Hyped af for this one. Just wondering about the whole theaters situation
|
The trailers are showing up on Twitter ads now. The fact that they are ramping this up suggests they've made the decision to go ahead with this in the near future.
Seems an odd decision, though. I know there's no chance any Toronto theater is going to be open in July for me to watch this (which has to be one of the top 5 North American cities for movie $$$). |
Warner’s has now taken it off the release calendar. It might open on a country by country basis. Or even a city by city.
https://variety.com/2020/film/news/t...an-1234699068/ Warner Bros. has removed “Tenet” from its release calendar, delivering a big blow on the exhibition industry at a time when movie theaters had hoped to peg their re-opening to the late summer debut of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller. Though necessary given the mass uncertainty over when cinemas across the globe can safely reopen, the decision further complicates Hollywood’s already bumpy plan to revive moviegoing. “Tenet” was originally scheduled to debut on July 17 but was pushed back twice until Aug. 12. It’s unclear when it will now welcome audiences, but the studio plans to share a new release date “imminently.” “We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” said Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement. “We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.” The studio also announced that “The Conjuring 3” has been postponed to June 4, 2021. The eighth entry in Warner Bros.’ horror franchise was schedule to debut in theaters on Sept. 11. However, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” was supposed to have additional shoots scheduled for April. Since production across the globe hasn’t been able to resume, it wouldn’t be ready in time for its target release date. “Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen,” Emmerich said. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from exhibitors and remain steadfast in our commitment to the theatrical experience around the world. Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates.” Sources at Warner Bros. stress that they will have to be flexible with its plans to release “Tenet,” which means it will not have a traditional theatrical rollout. Movie theaters overseas have already started to reopen, so there’s a chance it could launch internationally prior to a domestic release. That would be welcome news for exhibitors in Europe and Asia, two robust moviegoing markets that haven’t had a new Hollywood movie to entice audiences in months. In their plans to reopen, movie theater owners recently expressed concern to Variety that the global box office has all but been “forgotten” by U.S. studios. Previous films from “Nolan” have earned more than 50% of box office revenues from theaters overseas. |
It's going to be interesting to see if they actually say screw the US and just go ahead and release it in these other countries. They'd probably still make a lot of money but it might increase the odds of a leak before it ever shows up in US theaters.

I want to see this in the theater so bad, you guys. :deevee:

I guess I'll finally get around to watching Dunkirk as a replacement, even though the previous just make me not want to watch it. Seems like a war movie that's been done 100 times.
|
Quote:
Can Pattinson....actually act? Like, that's a thing now? Huh. Didn't expect that. I'm hit or miss on Nolan. Respect the hell out of his abilities but I liked Dunkirk so much more than anything else he's ever done. Because it's grounded. And somehow the Batman trilogy is the 2nd most grounded thing he's done and that's 2nd on my list (with Batman Begins being my favorite of that trio, probably the least bombastic). Nolan, when left to his own devices, is just out there. And when the trailer started and it was looking like "Nolan does James Bond" I was thinking it was probably amazing. But then he went Nolany again and sometimes he just ends up...well...up his own ass a little bit. And the quality of his filmmaking gets lost in the weirdness of his story. But it is what it is. It'll almost certainly still be good. I just wish it was a little less esoteric. |
I'm somewhat surprised that a company hasn't swooped in to open drive in theaters. This seems like a no-brainer because there will be high risk people who won't go to the theaters this fall even if they do open.

Paramount delayed Top Gun Maverick and Quiet Place II again. Both pushed about a year from their original release dates.
By the time Top Gun opens, it will be nearly 3 years after it filmed. |

Hans Zimmer won't be doing the music.
Will fail as a result. |

Whatever Zimmer does captures the perfect imagination and mood the film is trying to accomplish. I didn't even know who he was until a couple years ago. I started noticing that I LOVED the themes from almost every movie he was involved with. |

He brings in young composers, pays them very poorly (at one point, as little as $12 dollars an hour). After getting his coffee and lunch and running errands for him for years on end, he'll finally allow these composers to score specific scenes, then puts his name on the copyright, regardless of whether or not he wrote a single note, then sits back and collects between $3-4 million per film. Some guys break out of his grasp, like Klaus Badelt, who scored the first Pirates of the Carribean movie, only to have Hans pull it away from him after the success of the first film (Klaus and Hans had a MAJOR two year fight that ended in a massive settlement for Klaus). Other guys toil away for years on end, hoping for their chance before they finally give up and go elsewhere (a lot of guys just quit the business altogether after working for him). I've known several people, from composers to orchestraters, that absolutely hate the man (as does his wife, who's handled all of his business transactions and is now divorcing him) and have stories for days about the shenanigans Hans would pull. He's also been sued for copyright infringement on multiple occasions and a very close friend of mine is suing him a second time since 2015 in a case that's almost open and shut because he ripped off something almost note-for-note and beat-for-beat. I seriously doubt the untrained ear would even detect a difference. Also, his company had to redo the Cue Sheet Submission for The Dark Knight in order to be eligible for an Oscar because it listed 17 composers on ONE CUE, which was well over the limit. |
Wow. That...sucks.

Based on my minimal reading of the internet, it appears Zimmer claims that Nolan wanted him to do Tenet but he couldn't because of obligations with the new Dune film. Sniffs like BS to me. Does Zimmer have an affiliation with this Ludwig Gorannson guy? |
Quote:
Ludwig won the Oscar for Best Score for Marvel's Black Panther movie, scores Star Wars The Mandalorian TV series, for which he was Emmy-nominated this year, and won a Grammy for producing and co-writing for Childish Gambino's (Donald Glover) This Is America Album and Song of the Year. He's more of a Hybrid Electronic/Orchestral composer and I'll be surprised if the score for Tenet isn't very, very good, if not great. |
Disney has decided to drop ‘Mulan’ on Disney+ Sept 4th, but you will have to pay $30 to see it on some special premium tier.

Presale tix on sale now.
If it’s playing In your area? It is mine. They are doing pre screenings Aug 31-Sep 2 |
Getting some middling reviews and warnings of "It's a Nolan Film". After Dunkirk, I cant give him the benefit of the doubt (Interstellar and Memento are GOAT tier movies).
|
Quote:
I really enjoyed Dunkirk. I can see how a lot of people may not have, though. I wish someone would make a quality WW2 aerial combat movie. Nolan killed it with those scenes. It felt like I was in the damn airplane watching the movie in the theater. |
If it’s as confusing as it seems it could be then it might be a movie that gets better with additional viewings.

Prior to 2000, trailers generally consisted of music in a studio's library, which is why you'd hear music from Field of Dreams or some other previously released movie's score in trailers. But that all changed in the new millennium as digital audio, with instant editing and samplers that could handle huge orchestral libraries that became available through faster computer CPU's, more RAM and larger hard drives. Now, it's all about the Brass Swells and huge percussive BOOMS! and so on. Generally speaking, a big budget feature film's trailer will use multiple tracks from multiple Trailer Libraries to create the trailer, with the music chosen by the specific editor of the trailer. It's a very "crowded" genre which is why I've avoided that aspect of composing but I did have the John Carter of Mars trailer on Starz! and Encore that ran for nearly a full year back in 2012. |
Hmm. Trailer music didn’t make me want to see this, and despite the locations and visuals, it all seems to be rather formulaic at this point for a Nolan movie. Same soup warmed over.
Pass. |
I’ve read a couple reviews that basically call this a mess and a snoozer, prolly gonna wait for a rental
