Prime Mike Tyson absolutely destroys Bruce Lee.

Chuck Norris allows/ed them both to exist solely because he is a relatively nice guy.

Some of the lines from the trailer about Godzilla attacking for no good reason lead me to believe that Godzilla is being controlled by someone or something else. Think the original Toho movie plot from "Destroy All Monsters" circa 1968. Would be a nice way to tie this film to a classic Toho film other than Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).

Going to go out on a limb and say we see a mecha-Gidorah in this film as the eventual baddie that Kong & Godzilla have to team up against.

ThaVirus 01-25-2021 09:04 AM

It's really not a secret anymore as they've released a line of toys that spoiled the whole thing (plus a major plot leak that's been out for like a year now), but, yeah, it's MechaGodzilla. In the first few seconds as people are running away, you can slightly see a glowing red monster causing the destruction. Also, at one point there's a guy talking in front of a computer screen that shows schematics that look like Big G and it says "MAXIMUM POWER" or something.

This will almost assuredly be a Batman v Superman situation where they end up teaming up to fight the bigger baddie, but the director did say there will be a definitive winner in the fight between Godzilla and Kong.

Either way, im excited.

ThaVirus 01-25-2021 09:05 AM

And in case you didn't notice, Kong is wielding an axe made from one of Godzilla's tail spikes LMAO

In Kong: Skull Island John C Reilly mentioned that Kong was still growing. That took place shortly after Nam, I believe, so he's had nearly 50 years to grow since that flick.

Not to be picky....and I'm not well versed in the Kong/Godzilla backstories.

But wasn't Kong and these "monsters" ancient beings?

Just don't understand Kong's growth spurt.

All this time from Ancient times to the 60's Kong was a particular size, but then he grew 10x his size in the last 50-60yrs?

I know they're trying to make it work and just go with it so they can make the movie etc. But am I missing something here?

I think your overthinking this.

What are the odds that 90% of the movie consists of boring scenes of humans talking about the monsters?

Most of it is probably as simple as needing to match Godzilla's size. Godzilla got much larger over the years. More than Kong.

The arrow may be pointing up but if HBO Max doesn't offer their theatrical films within 45 days of release or less, they're going to lose millions upon millions of subscribers.

Agree. They are missing a killer must see show exclusive to HBOMax.

I wanted to see this in theaters but I've had a killer migraine for days now. I paid for HBOmax an hour ago and after I eat I'll be watching it.

I still plan to go see it on the big screen as long as it isn't terrible (relative to a Monster movie fan perspective.)

This.

The best way I can relate this film is the way comic book movies use to be. Before the Marvel movies there was Batman and pretty much every other comic movie was liked by comic fans and no one else. Comic movies were very cheesy and you were either a nerd and liked it or a normie and didn't. Batman being really the only exception.

Marvel movies were different. They were still cheesy but acceptable cheesy. Normies could watch and enjoy without completely rolling their eyes.

GVK is that for monster movies. I was surprised all the way through how much the plot and human elements were upped. It was the difference between Tim Burton Batman (King of the Monsters) and Dark Knight Rises (GVK.) It is not as good an overall movie as DKR but the perfect theater popcorn movie that doesn't make you roll your eyes.

I would say it's Jurassic Park with bad science.

It doesn't erode the core of the Godzilla/Kong universe to appeal to a bigger audience. In fact, despite my pounding head and handful of narcotics I noticed a good 20 tips of the hat to the Japanese Godzilla films. TONS of things included G fans will recognize but don't take a way from the plot or film by being included.

I'd really like to do a non-spoiler review when my eyes aren't being jabbed with ice pics.

Short story: by FAR best Monster-verse movie yet. Even people who don't usually enjoy Godzilla/Kong will still have fun. It's Jurassic Park + Godzilla and Kong + sci-fi elements...

Fish 03-31-2021 06:25 PM

Just downloaded the 4K. Didn't realize it was out already. Giddy up!

KC_Lee 03-31-2021 07:16 PM

Just got done watching it via HBO Max. Some thoughts...

Best movie (writing, characters, fights, etc.) of the Monster-verse since Kong: Skull Island, which is still the best in my opinion
Better script than Godzilla: King of the Monsters but still lacking somewhat on the human side
There are some scenes that you can tell were shot for IMAX / 3D.
Of two human "groups" we follow the one following Godzilla / APEX was the weakest, Millie Bobby Brown wasn't bad but wasn't great either in this film, she was just sort of there
Regarding the fight scenes, glad we got away from the fights at night during a driving rainstorm but...
Spoiler!

The monsters...
Spoiler!

Some deep cut references throughout the movie, I mean really deep cut references, that were great adds if you're a hard core fan. Not just the old Showa series of Toho films but a couple of callbacks to scenes from a couple of the Heisei series of Toho films.

All in all I liked the movie, could have been better in some spots, almost 2 hours long but I felt like the movie was lacking any meat (plot wise) and was a lot of empty calories. But just like a good dessert, I enjoyed the empty calories.

I have no problem with the first spoiler. That was done to show how different the home field advantage was and pointed out the difference later on.

I also at first felt like you did on the 2nd spoiler but that points back to the characters - Kong is more closely like a human and Godzilla is a force of nature. They should act differently...

Nope.

Of the humans there is team A and team B. All of the puny humans story lines follow one of these two teams. Team A is at all times accompanied by Kong. ALL of team A's story has Kong in it.

Really 3/4ths of this movie has some giant monster in it. Humans are really only the first 30 minutes and Kong's in a good part of that as well...

It would pretty much have to be Destoroyah, right? They've already set that plot into motion, unless they want to save him for the ultimate big bad if multiple sequels are planned.

Mennonite 04-01-2021 11:25 AM

I was very excited because I thought the local drive-in was playing this and Nobody as a double feature. The very first movie I ever saw at a drive-in was King Kong Lives (1986). Turns out that they are going to be on different screens which screws up my plan.

Thought it was pretty good. Plot was a complete turd. But this is a monster movie. The monster fights were really well done. The Tokyo fight in particular really nailed that old school monster movie feel where Tokyo would be completely leveled in each film. Pretty much all the human acting was forgettable. It's OK that the monsters stole the show.

This is the correct take. The Stranger Things girl and her two sidekicks, the black incel and the bloated teenage eunuch, were insufferable.

They uploaded the "blueprint" of the energy source molecule or the energy profile. It stretches belief, but we are watching a movie about titans.

Only because of the extremely cool ending do I give this a 7/10.

The side story that really never added much with Bobby Brown and the kid from Deadpool 2 (FireFist), made all their parts really drag.

Easily the weakest of this series of movies thus far.

Pacific Rim was far better than any of the Godzilla and Kong movies. The Legendary films went the Transformers route and are just dumb beyond belief. The only way to rationalize them is that they’re for the same audience that loved the originals from Toho — kids — and on that level they work I guess but you can make a Godzilla movie that isn’t an exercise in seeing how many different ways buildings can be destroyed. Remaking the original 1954 Godzilla would be amazing but based on the audience reviews for GvK it seems like most are happy with monsters running amok in a movie with zero character development, completely implausible storylines, and whole bunch of stupid on top.

Easily the weakest of this series of movies thus far.

Honestly I would have preferred the conspiracy guy to have gone on his quest alone. No need for 11 or the fat kid.

I thought the little deaf girl did a good job though. Her scenes with Kong were the heart of the movie.

I think it's the movie I enjoyed most of the 4. It was the most fun but not the best film...

The first one was not like that at all. Godzilla 14 was a very grounded and "realistic" take on Titans and I was hoping they stayed that route. They didn't.

I think had Edwards done a trilogy we would have something very different right now...
