What was the first song you liked?
Disregarding nursery rhymes and anything before age 6...
What's your first memory of a song that really caught your ear? For me it was "Henry the Eighth" by Herman's Hermits. Catchy, and I could sing along to the simple lyrics. I think I was 6 or 7. Also... What was the first music you bought with your own money? Single, Album, etc.. |
First song - "Stay" by Lisa Loeb. My babysitter liked it, and I liked her. And it is a good song.
First purchased music - cassette of Hootie and the Blowfish, Cracked Rear View. |
My brother played a Puff the Magic Dragon song on an old 78.
Great. Thanks mother****er. That shits going to be in my head for a month. |

The Partridge Family-Come on Get Happy.
Years later I was at a small intimate gig with Tommy Stimpson from the Replacements and he did a cover of that song and the place went wild. |

The first song I remember thinking "this is my favorite song!" was 'Don't Look Back' by Boston.
Was probably 6-8 years old. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KvmNRXdb2ng" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> First album I bought? Hell I don't know - some BMG record ripoff thing where I got 8 CDs. I'm pretty sure Gin Blossoms was one of them. I played the hell out of the Blues Traveler CD as well. I think I had Fatboy Slim in there, the Zoot Suit Riot guy (Brian Selzter orchestra?), maybe GooGoo dolls? Some of that mid 90s era stuff all starts to run together. |
I was 3-4 and my older "sister" loved this song and played it non stop.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cAQSZhazYk8" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Oooof. Good question. Probably Metallica's Enter Sandman.
Discovering my dad's Motley Crue "Dr. Feelgood" cassette was my first time really picking a favorite artist though. By age 9-10 i had probably collected all of their cassettes. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CD-E-LDc384" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The more i think about it though, the more i think this may have been my 1st song i liked.

Uptown Girl by Billy Joel
|
Interesting question..
My earliest memories of songs I liked are Tim McGraw's Don't Take the Girl, 2pac's Changes and Chaka Demus and Pliers' Murder She Wrote. My mom mainly listened to country and my dad rap/R&B/reggae. It makes perfect sense but it is funny how your parents influence your tastes. Neither of my parents were into rock or classic stuff. I'm in my 30s and I literally could not pick any one of the Beatles out of a lineup. |
I'm 56 years old. Like I'm going to remember the first song I liked. Could have been anything from a song I heard on Hee Haw to the theme song to Partridge Family. LMAO

It's either something by the Mamas & the Papas, Monkees, or Beatles. |
I'm same age group. Probably House of the Rising Sun since that was one of my mom's favorites. After that probably would some of the Beatles or Chuck Berry.
|
Led Zeppelin: Black Dog and Stairway to Heaven.
Kiss: Rock and Roll All Nite David Bowie: Young Americans. I can't remember the exact order but those all stuck out huge when I was around 14-15 years old. |
Green Onions by Booker T and the MG's

My mom and dad listened to Neil Diamond, Abba, Earth Wind and Fire, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, stuff like that. I never really got into it much. But my best friend growing up (and the house I probably stayed at more than my own) was a Jamaican family and my boy Mikey dread. At his house I was exposed to reggae, and the first time I heard One Love I was in love. That music made more sense to my young brain than what my parents listened to. Went through lots of different musical phases in my life but I’ve always stuck with reggae/dancehall music. Some of my best memories are to sound of Jamaican Music.
First album I bought with my money was Prince Purple Rain. |

Music was in our house since i was a baby. I was the youngest of four siblings When it rained we spun records on a suitcase player. So I noticed music early 6 to 7 I was picking favorite songs.
I remember this one, especially nearing Halloween. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/u8uvLHnrqdU" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

First few albums I bought with my own money were Blues Traveler - Four, Collective Soul's self titled, and Faith No More's Greatest Hits.

I was 3 years old, my Dad had this album and I loved to play it (I figured out how to use a record player young).

By 88 things started to sound like the 90s. And in 82 things still kinda sounded like the 70s. But christ on a cracker that sounds like the 80s so I'm gonna just assume that came out in June of 1985. EDIT: Nailed it...almost. February of 1985. How'd they manage to find 7 cut-rate Lionel Richie's for that video? You could tell me that entire song/video is an SNL skit that didn't quite land and I'd believe you. |
What is the earliest song I can remember hearing and really liking?
Rosanna by super-band Toto. |
So get this - I sent the Debarge video to a group text with some softball/drinking buddies and asked them if they could come up with anything more 80s than this.
One of the guys on there calls me cracking up. On football Sundays at the bar he always goes, prior to kickoff, they troll touchtunes to play the most obnoxiously 80s song they can find. They take their shot, settle up and the 'winner' gets a couple beers out of the deal. They have one rule: No DeBarge Because there is no beating DeBarge in a 'what's the most 80s thing imaginable' showdown. I have been vindicated. |
Loved my mom and dad's Three Dog Night album.
One and Joy to the World were my first ever songs I remember liking as a young lad. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BvA5xFuDb0o" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EVcpKjXYa5c" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I'm pretty sure it was this song by Johnny Horton
<iframe width="641" height="481" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/50_iRIcxsz0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> But I think my first recollection Pink Panther theme I'd like to sneak around and be sneaky, we had it on record with chipmunks ALVIN Simon Theodore. But also this song I heard over and over when i was little and it's nostalgic for me to listen too after my Grandparents took me and my brother in and away from. Anyways this is the Rhinestone Cowboy it was really catchy to me <iframe width="855" height="481" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8kAU3B9Pi_U" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> Also we had an 8 track of Judas Priest but i didn't remember any of the songs but I liked them and my first introduction to Rock and Roll. |

And yeah, Joy to the World was always "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog" for me as a kid. Also a good one. |
the first song I liked was Elvira. my dad blasted Oak ridge Boys music a lot. the first musician I liked was Roy Orbison, all his songs were great. I was 5 or 6 at the time.
the first song I loved was NIB by Sabbath. I heard that when I was 12 IIRC |
I have no idea the first song I liked. And I owned albums that I got as presents or that I asked my mom to buy for me at the store.
Not totally sure the first one I paid for at the register myself. Might have been either Styx Pieces of Eight or a Best of ZZ Top album. |

I know one of the first songs I really liked was Uptown Girl by William Joel. When I was 4 or 5 I would play it over and over and ride on my little horsey on springs like I was The Lone Ranger. Also really liked Thriller and Billie Jean. These were cassettes my parents had.
Dark Side of the Moon. What a blessing it was for that to be the first album I ever heard while high. Cranked up really loud in my friend's car. I owe him for that one. |
I think it was probably get over it from the eagles reunion show Hell Freezes Over when i was 5 or 6. My dad watched that vhs so much and I loved it. Haven't heard it in 20 years and could still recite it word for word.

Upon reflection, the first album I ever bought was "Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods" in 1974 - I would have been eight or nine at the time. Their big hit was Billy Don't Be A Hero. If you've never heard of them, don't feel bad, since they rose and fell to obscurity very quickly.
Here's a video. I love the cringe-worthy jumpsuits they're wearing. Some nightmare combination of Elvis and Evil Knievel. Ah, the 70s. But if I was selective, my mom would pretty much buy me something if she thought I was serious (not just spur of the moment). I remember getting ABBA albums basically as they came out but she might have been buying them for herself as much as me. A friend's older brother was playing an album one day, it was a little harder to talk my mom into buying ELP Brain Salad Surgery because of the name. Although she ended up liking the Benny was a Bouncer song. |
Throw the Jew Down The Well by Borat Sagdiev. It was a classic.

First music that was 'mine' as in I chose it and tuned in was on my clock radio.
Q-104 top 5 at 9. My first vinyl I had was the Jackson 5s greatest hits. So probably “I want you back” or “abc”
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
When I was a child, my only exposure was to diehard old-school country music. Rock and roll did not enter our house and I was not aware that it existed other than a vague parental disapproval of The Beatles who just made a bunch of noise.
When I was about 5 years old, my parents bought one of those enormous console combination televisions that contained a television, radio, and phonograph player. I'm not sure why they bought it because they never used the radio, and they only owned one record album. In their entire lives, that was the only record album they ever owned. And that brings me to the point. They had the one record album all through my childhood, and it was some sort of "popular country hits" record from a particular year. So I heard that record somewhat frequently. There was one song on there that my five-year old mind found to be very clever. It was this: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dYS9FalmdkI" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> So the song that I first liked was a pretty bad song about a guy getting drunk. And I'm not even really sure that it's a song. It's more of a weird story set to music. At some point I was able to listen to the radio, and I guess I like story songs. I heard CW McCall's "Wolfcreek Pass" and it became my new favorite song. From there I went to Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans". Then when I was about 14, I was hanging out with older kids who had the money to buy records and 8-tracks, and I heard Styx's "Come Sail Away". At that point my musical tastes took a hard turn toward rock and roll. |
Most of my classmates were listening to Bobby Goldsoboro, Jackson 5, AM radio pop. I heard this and it expanded my musical life.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LiQW1TlDZMU" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
This is tough to nail down the "first", but I can vividly remember a couple.
My mom got me a Snoopy record player (45's) at the age of... 5 or 6? and my sister gave me a couple of 45 records. Them being: Michael Jackson - "Thriller" The Surfaris - "Wipe Out" I remember these being my first fav songs. Shortly after that I remember my fav song on the radio being: Dire Straits - "Money for Nothing". |
