Still waiting on the tri-wheel version rocket-equipped version they teased in an ad from 1977.

I saw a car hauler carrying 7 or 8 of those driving down I-95 in Florida.
They looked absolutely horrendous in real life. The stainless looked like the surface of a well used teflon frying pan. Everything looked so out of proportion.

BWillie 02-20-2024 09:51 AM

So the NHTSA has ****ed Tesla. I was going to buy a new Tesla. Test drove all of them. Was confused why the Auto Pilot (Not Full Self Driving) sucked so bad. On new Teslas with the cabin camera it constantly nags and disengages autopilot. I started reading and found out two months ago NHTSA forced Tesla to make these changes and to monitor a drivers eyes with the cabin camera. So if you look away for 2 seconds to update the map, change the station or song, look out the window it auto nags. Its not even worth using anymore.

I know folks will claim this is great for safety but now there is no point to even use it. Id rather just drive normally and be distracted that way. Studies shown that prior older vehicles that didnt track the eyes and just relied on periodic pressure to the steering wheel for their autopilot nags was much safer than cars that just did not have auto pilot. Because in a real world environment people will always get tired, always get distracted etc. Distracted on autopilot > distracted not on it. Now people are just not going to use AP because its so annoying and actually makes a drive more stressful.

So I see no reason to get rid of my old Tesla where autopilot works fine and my face isn't tracked to nag me every time Im not a driving zombie. Im sure Elons persona did him no favors with the NHTSA.

ghak99 02-20-2024 10:01 AM

The NHTSA watches pornhub.

I googled images and didn't immediately see that it opened up into a bed. So I guess it is more pickup-ish than I realized.

Yeah, that ****ing sucks.

I want some sort of autopilot pretty bad. I drive a lot of miles on county roads that it obviously wouldn't work on, but there are a lot of highway miles that I would get a TON of value out of mentally checking out for a few minutes.

I've long said that Automated driving will outperform humans, but the liability will fall on the manufacturers, and that will be a problem.

Obviously I was wrong on it shitcanning the whole thing, but it looks like the lawyers are still fighting.

How long until someone Jailbreaks a Tesla? LOL

Autodrive liability insurance is coming.

Can’t believe it hasn’t happened yet.

On a side note airplane autopilot has taken a massive amount of stress off my shoulders when I used to fly. “When stressed let the best pilot in the plane do the flying, and it isnt you”.

Yep. Even a million years ago when the first autosteer tractors hit the market, I was skeptical. Then I watched one. It will whip my ass all over the field. And I'm a good operator.

If autotrack was going when I was in high school I’d probably be farming today.

I could handle 8-9 hour days of paying attention in the 4430 or 4850, but it broke me each summer.

I couldn’t imagine myself doing that for the next 60 years. It’d be a living hell.

Someone else is paying the NHTSA some side money while they catch up on self driving technology.

This has always been a thing for business for as long as man has been in business.

My guess is it will take an act of congress to carve out an exception for automated cars.

If China/Japan/Europe have successfully* deployed driverless cars and the USA has not, maybe, and who knows with our politics...

There might be enough public push to have a liability law where driverless car wrecks are treated more like regular car wrecks with insurance as opposed to the type of liability Boeing would face for deploying a dangerous airplane.

I'm seeing a ton of these in Austin, Tx running around. Has to be one of the ugliest MF'ing things I've seen in my entire life.

I just have to chuckle every time I see a diesel semi, loaded with Teslas, driving through town to deliver them somewhere else. Love the irony

Thanks. I had read about the Tesla Semis but didn’t know they were so close to delivery and being put into broader use

Balto 03-20-2024 12:19 PM

Tesla still offer a front bench options in the Cyber Truck? Having an EV truck with option for 6 people.

Its ugly but having a need for a 6 seater could trump that.

Cybertruck looks the 2nd iteration of the Top Gear electric vehicle. Proud is not a word I would use to describe an owner of one of those.

Lol, we usually blame the snowbirds for bringing the bad weather. So it's all her fault.

Bad Bunny brought his Cybertruck last night. First one I've ever seen in person.

... I'm OK with it being the last too.

I see the Cybertruck all the time in person. I think they look cool.

Def a certain market/buyer for these trucks. Getting it wrapped from the get would be best.

Seems a lot of people care more about what their vehicle looks like but don't give a shit about their body (best thing they will ever own).

Of course people care about how things look. It legitimately looks like the model was designed by a pinewood derby truck. But beyond that, it's functionally a stupid vehicle. It's a truck with sloped sides, so forget about reaching over the side of the bed to get something. You'll have to walk all the way to the back of the truck. And its still an electric vehicle which requires too much god damn time to recharge with half the ****ing range of a gas vehicle.

The market is Californians who don't really understand what a truck is.

It definitely depends on how you use it, but I find that I spend less time 'fueling' my electric car than I did my gas car. This is mostly because my car's range (~320 miles) far exceeds the distance I ever need to drive in a day (~100 miles), so I never need to stop anywhere specific for fuel, I just spend 10 seconds to plug it in when I get home in the evening and 10 seconds to unplug it before I leave.

Yeah, we're nearing 5 years with my wife's Leaf. It gets a whopping 150 miles per charge, but I'd guess we've used a public charger fewer than 5 times, and even then it was mostly just to see how far we could push the range. I didn't buy it to take road trips, so we just always charge overnight at home.

Some people do make road trips work, but I don't personally have the patience for that.

Saw my first one in the wild. I think the weird cyber punk thing is pretty cool and different. They are nice but I don't wanna wait years which is what they told me the other day. So finally broke down and bought the Model Y which is much more practical. Wrapping it orange so I don't look like all the other soccer moms and goatee dads out there. Figured our a way to trick the auto pilot.

I heard that. I was supposed to get 1-3 months free FSD since I used my friends referral code but haven't even messed around to look. Fascinated to see how FSD works. I've only used regular auto pilot and enhanced ap.

I'm from what is considered truck country here in California. Seems flyover people just have an opinion based off what they're fed through the internet.

I'd be curious to drive this Cybertruck. I'm guessing it drives better then most vehicles. I did sit in one and it is hard to see out of so you have to rely on the Cameras. Guess that's just a learning curve.

Great and all except his he's got his everyday and 2 other vehicles he Turo's in his garage so when I asked where he plans to park it he said right in front of his house ("it can power the entire house if needed!")

So not super thrilled about it

Great and all except his he's got his everyday and 2 other vehicles he Turo's in his garage so when I asked where he plans to park it he said right in front of his house ("it can power the entire house if needed!")

So not super thrilled about it

Then he rents it out to Rashee and is down a vehicle

I'd get a bit of a chuckle (not Rashee renting it) if that happened

One of his other rentals is a new lifted 4 door Wrangler that he specifies in the contract isn't allowed off road. Okay so people rent it to drive around PHX with the top off but a Tesla truck?

Its just people renting it for the pics or to be seen I guess which is kind of eye rolling but whatever. Maybe camping? IDK

He is going to rent it for 700 a day?

Looks like 500+ is the going rate so not sure

I typically cut him him off before he gets too far into the weeds of his plans

I can't imagine what insurance is renting vehicles to strangers.

I guestimated 1100-1200/month plus 200ish for personal insurance. That is just paying for the price of the vehicle, no tires or rental insurance.

It's built into the costs Turo charges. The person renting and the owner don't even really know how much the insurance is.

I realize that some of those are probably just legitimate acceleration. Still, many of them are just dudes being jackholes. I am far from an environmentalist but I hate diesels. I can't stand the smell and black smoke. Hell, some of those actually made it unsafe. I am against making them illegal but perhaps they should require the pipes be vertical, like a semi.

I've been driving diesels for years, these guys are ****sticks with a micropenis.

Ugliest automobile ever. Step aside, AMC Pacer and Volkswagen Thing.

I want it to be ugly and futuristic so that you notice it and talk about it.

Kinda like how people notice a prominent birthmark, or one of those underdeveloped baby arms?

With a carbuncle on it, maybe.

Is that what Marty McFly drove in Back to the future?

ghak99 04-12-2024 03:33 PM

What is it?

It reminds me of a Datsun from the late 70s.
