Yeah that was great to see. Looks like they activated the FTS on SH? Either way, it did its job.

Go Starship!!

Damn. FTS on Starship.

But wow, what a launch!!

DaFace 11-18-2023 07:16 AM

Well bummer wonder what happened at the end. It looked like a cutoff to me rather than an explosion first, but I guess we'll see when they crunch the numbers.

Still, that's a pretty big success. Hopefully the pad is in better shape this time.

I woke up at 6:59. Perfect time.

DaFace 11-18-2023 07:22 AM

Watching the replay, I'm betting they started running low on fuel, lost some engines, and then the FTS triggered as it started to go off course.

You're talking about Starship? What replay are you watching?

Donger 11-18-2023 07:26 AM

Watching the MECO(s) of SH's engines in sequence was one of the coolest things I've seen.

Yeah, second stage. You see a poof, then the engines are dimmer, then a little time, then boom.

"So, Flight 2 actually almost made it to orbit," Musk said in a recent company update, which SpaceX posted on X on Jan. 12. The explosion was caused by a venting of liquid oxygen, he added — and there was liquid oxygen left to vent only because Starship wasn't hauling any satellites that day.

"We normally wouldn't have that liquid oxygen if we had a payload," Musk said in the update, which he gave at Starbase to a crowd of SpaceX employees. "So, ironically, if it had had a payload, it would have reached orbit."

In case anyone's curious, the NOVA-C moon lander is attempting to land on the moon here in about 15 minutes. It's just a robot, but the U.S. hasn't landed anything on the moon in decades, so still cool.

They're have a signal but they're working some things out. It could take another 30 minutes to work things out.

They're a good 5 minutes past the point where they should have received some communication from the lander. I'm beginning to think it may have crashed and burned.

Not looking good, but there are "signs of life." Wonder if it landed intact but not in the right orientation.

"Our equipment is on the surface of the moon, and we are transmitting."

So...success? I think?

They're at least tentatively calling it a success! Hopefully we'll get a feel for whether everything is nominal soon.

Yeah, the I watched for about 30 minutes or more, and it was all pretty anti-climactic until the mission director said: Odysseus has found a new home.

That was pretty cool. It'll be great when they have acquired signal and can begin transmitting some live feed.

So you're saying that someone - or something - tipped it over?
