Wow, amazing video of MECO, stage sep and the flip!

DaFace 01-31-2022 05:17 PM

These shots are going to be great. It's so clear that they're still able to get a visual on stage 2 after MECO, and since it's up in the sunlight you can still see the stage itself - not just the exhaust plume. Very cool.

40 Starlink satellites wiped out by a geomagnetic storm

The satellites deployed on Thursday were significantly impacted by a geomagnetic storm on Friday. These storms cause the atmosphere to warm and atmospheric density at our low deployment altitudes to increase. In fact, onboard GPS suggests the escalation speed and severity of the storm caused atmospheric drag to increase up to 50 percent higher than during previous launches.

The deorbiting satellites pose zero collision risk with other satellites and by design demise upon atmospheric reentry.

If Starship works, SLS will almost certainly be cancelled. But until we're sure it won't be a flop, I don't blame NASA for having at least SOMETHING working in parallel.

Several Mars rovers have observed Phobos crossing in front of the Sun over the past 18 years. Spirit and Opportunity made the first observations back in 2004; Curiosity in 2019 was the first to record video of the event. Each time these eclipses are observed, they allow scientists to measure subtle shifts in Phobos’ orbit over time. The moon’s tidal forces pull on the deep interior of the Red Planet, as well as its crust and mantle; studying how much Phobos shifts over time reveals something about how resistant the crust and mantle are, and thus what kinds of materials they’re made of.

The next Electron launch, There and Back Again, has been pushed back to April 27th due to weather. This will be their first attempt at a mid-air recovery (no Frankie, recovery). I know the Neutron is expected to replace the Electron, but I'm expecting this will still give Rocket Lab a lot of important reusability data.

I love the fact that SpaceX has all those big convoluted names for their recovery ships and then "Doug" to recover the fairings. :)

Agree it's funny, but the explanations are relatively straightforward. The drone ships are named after ships in Ian M Banks novels. The recovery ships are named after Bob and Doug, the Demo 2 astronauts.

Musk should make that rocket to where every time it takes a satellite to orbit it runs over and grabs a NK, China ,Russian satellite and brings it back.

Crazy considering they used to have a stretch goal of getting 10 launches out of a booster.

Third launch in around 36 hours coming up for SpaceX in a few minutes. Amazing the pace at which they operate these days.
