I live 40 minutes from there and won't play it - I sure as hell wouldn't drive several hours.

A guy I talked to today compared it to a young Silo Ridge. I've only played that once so I don't know:shrug:

Today however, we played at Hidden Valley down on the James River. Boaz, Mo. The Ozark Mtn Darevils had a couple of old dudes from Boaz on an album cover. I thinks that's true. Down home country golf. The first time I played Hidden Valley was in a HS conference match way back in 1976 there'bouts. Nothing but clover and lost balls. Today it was pretty good. The fairways were good and all the trees have grown up. The one thing about that course is the greens will always be mid to slow.

I've played Jr Golf, HS, Golf, College Golf and some Amateur Golf. I played in HS State, College Nationals. I've played on Amateur Cup Teams and of course won many a scrambles with friends and my dad. Won some best ball were I played great. But I never have won an individual medal play tournament until today. It's a small weak field but today I was the best in the field. I shot 77 on a par 73 with the last 12 holes played in a constant slow rain. Not a sprinkle but a slow rain. It was kind of beautiful in that it was a rain you could manage. Just a nice soft rain. I had plenty of towels.

I think this is the first time a tourney was won when the winner was the worst putter ever, almost. I played splendidly tee to green most of the day. I drove it well and then I hit various wedge shots, 9 irons and 8 irons all within 10 feet of the hole. Just beautiful golf shots. But then I missed 5 birdie putts that were no longer than I am tall. I shit you not.

So I get up on the last hole which is a couple hundred yard carry over water. I neck it and it hit some limbs and then from there I never saw it. I figured it was where I saw a copperhead earlier in the day.

I never saw the ball so I didn't see it go in the pond. A worst it's a lost ball. I hit a provisional which I necked, but not as bad and I watched it fly just over the pond. I was looking short of the pond and any place where I wouldn't be in the pond. didn't want to find it there.

And then I saw it in the fairway 20 yards past the pond.o:-)

The group behind was waiting and for the first time all day I hurried and then chubbed it. Arrrrr......I was 20 yards short of the green and 30 yards from the hole. I thought I hit it pretty good but it just mushed and didn't roll any. So I'm 25'-30' from the hole for par.

After missing 5 birdie putts that added up to maybe 30' I drained it. Winner, winner, chicken dinner:D:LOL::D

Seems silly after all these years but I feel high because I'm a Champion.

Congrats on your win... I have played Hidden Valley many times. My in-laws live in Springfield and is my father-in-law's favorite course. Seems like I have the dueling banjos song from Deliverance in my head every time I play there.
I think #11 is the hole that goes beside the James river and I have been standing over my second shot and hear whoops and howlers from the drunk float trip people on the river. It's quite the experience. Don't think I've ever shot better than an 86 on it.

#12. Yeah floaters echo up off the river sometimes. I like it.

That Ol' Boy (I shoud know his name.)down there has slowly developed that course and as much as it's his it's at the point where some high dollar developers might buy that out.

Figure this thred was the place to share these. I regripped my irons today. Came out nice for my first time doing it. The old grips were factory and the clubs are as old as me so I figured it was about time.

Total cost 14$ 1hour and 2beers

Nice.

US Open Week at Pinehurst. Payne Stewart's victory there stands in time as a great moment in golf.

I briefly new Payne and he was a genuine person. Truly a great guy and a great champion. I watched him hitting balls one afternoon way back in about 1980 or something and he was stomping the ball into a fried egg lie and drilling it with a Cobra Baffler. It was impressive as hell.

Prison Bitch 06-10-2014 10:29 PM

So rory is the favorite just like Augusta. I guess he's played well lately but still does anyone really want to put down $100 at 6-1 on him? Scott has to be the favorite

KC_Connection 06-10-2014 11:10 PM

He got rid of the girlfriend distraction, I'd take McIlroy.

philfree 06-11-2014 01:00 AM

If I were to bet on golf I'd take Bubba in this one.

KC_Connection 06-13-2014 09:18 AM

Kaymer is absolutely destroying this course in a way nobody ever has and currently destroying the US Open field in a way few ever have. Really impressive, he looks unflappable.

KC_Connection 06-13-2014 12:00 PM

Back to back 65s. 8 shot lead.

No doubt. I got to catch a few minutes earlier today and they recapped some of his shots.

Definitely plowing through this course like a man possessed.

Six shot lead going into tomorrow, ties the largest 36 hole lead in US Open history. Couldn't ask to be in better shape than that.

Kaymer's also got a track record of winning big tournaments and is more seemingly confident than he's been in years too. Still a lot of golf left though. Saturday will decide what kind of tournament this ends up being.

TribalElder 06-15-2014 01:04 PM

Pinehurst is looking ruthless.

Touchiest greens I have ever seen.

TribalElder 06-15-2014 01:44 PM

leaders looking extremely nervous

the german will likely be the winner

MahiMike 06-15-2014 01:45 PM

Anyone played hodge park or shoal creek? I'm staying in liberty. Hodge park was my high school course. It was a dog track back then. Lose balls in middle of the fairway. Looks nice now. Shoal creek looks awesome.

displacedinMN 06-15-2014 01:45 PM

Kaymer would have to pull a Greg Norman to lose

KC_Connection 06-15-2014 02:11 PM

Kaymer has been in control of this tournament since Day 1. I don't see him choking this.

TribalElder 06-15-2014 02:38 PM

fowler absolutely collapsed on that hole. EXTREMELY lucky to make that putt for double bogey

Kaymer is running away

TribalElder 06-15-2014 02:46 PM

Fowler looking like Sergio when he was all ****ed up with all that waggling

You hit the nail on the head .... Tiger like performance @ Pebble. Congrats to Kaymer and helluva story w/Compton finishing tied for 2nd

Prison Bitch 06-15-2014 09:11 PM

What an absolute dogshit of a major. One of the worst I've ever seen. Yes, Kaymer played well but the field was awful all week and nobody made any type of charge. When Erik Compton (who???) finishes as a runner up in a major, that's when you know the bigger names were abysmal.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 06-15-2014 09:12 PM

No Tiger, no care.

Prison Bitch 06-15-2014 09:16 PM

Rory is making Nike regret that huge contract. He's been a pile of feces ever since he won the PGA and walked into that big money. The last 6 majors have been a total washout for the guy. It seems like every tournament, he's finishing behind Spieth. That has to sting him. With Tiger out of action, Nike is getting creamed on their endorsement spend.

How about Oakley? Loses Rory right before he tanks, retains Bubba Watson.

philfree 06-15-2014 09:39 PM

It looked a lot like the field against Tiger in his day. Kaymer got a lead and they couldn't mount a charge.

KC_Connection 06-15-2014 09:49 PM

As long as Tiger doesn't play at the British, you'd have to think Kaymer would be the favorite there too. He's won the last 2 big events in golf now.

Prison Bitch 06-15-2014 09:51 PM

Obviously he will be the favorite, and tigers presence wouldn't change that anyway

If Tiger plays, he'll be the betting favorite for sure regardless of how long he's been off on injury. He is in every tournament he plays.

Nonsense.

I think the way that course was set up, there was no way to make a run. Par golf was great golf on those greens. Looked like British open with tougher greens. Americans aren't used to putting from 100 feet off the pin.

George Liquor 06-16-2014 08:18 AM

Anybody play Forekeeper @ Prairie Band casino? Taking my dad there for his birthday in a few weeks.

hawkchief 06-16-2014 09:15 AM

Most boring major I've seen in a while. Can't decide if it was due to Kaymer or the USGA-ing of Pinehurst. Just a poor major IMO.

philfree 06-24-2014 10:16 AM

I thought it was great to for Wie to win the Womens US Open. Men and women she's my favorite pro right now.

On another note I played Eagle Creek at the Down Stream Casino this past sunday and it was in great shape. Back in the late 70's /early 80's my buddies and I would drive down there from Springfield and play. It was called Loma Linda back then and it was a cool place to play but a little rough. Now it's awesome. I didn't play particularly well although I did drive it pretty well. Just missed to many greens and to many par putts. And when I did miss the fairway I was punished. It was a tournament though and in the weak field I came out on top. That's wins in my last two starts. Back to back! I got a nice trophy and some greenbacks.

Next tourney is at Rivercut here in Springfield in about three weeks. It's going to be back to back to back.

Jerm 06-27-2014 05:11 PM

Sooooo how exactly does Great Life Golf work?

Just pay $30 a month and get access to the courses listed? I mean is it play whenever you want or do they restrict you to certain days and times?

Seems like a good deal to me even if the courses may not be the best...my nephew plays a bunch at River Oaks and this would give us a chance to play together.

OnTheWarpath15 06-27-2014 05:16 PM

I'm pretty excited with my game at the moment.

Started the year as a 21 HDCP, mostly due to wildness off the tee and fighting a hook throughout the bag.

Goal in January was to break 90. I've already done it 8 times in 20 rounds so far.

Shot a career low 85 last month, and set a new record Monday with an 80.

Index is down to a 16.1. Would be under 14, but I have 3 scores under 90 from the inactive season that technically shouldn't be posted.

Use to be happy if I broke 100, now I'm pissed if I don't break 90.

Pretty sure you can play whenever, I think you just have to make a tee time. My dad is a member and plays Lake Perry a lot.

Got a question for the more experienced golfers:

I admit I don't play too regularly, but it seems that there is always a stint in the summer in which I am doing a lot of manual labor around the house and my drives go from a slight fade to pulled duck-hooks.

I gather it is from the fact that I am right handed and all the use of the right hand/arm is altering the grip pressure/dominance of my right side in my swing causing the hook.

Are there any quick fixes or tips or countermeasures that you have known over the years to combat this? It really is annoying.

Could be that your big muscles become tight so instead of turning your torso you're just swinging with your arms.

philfree 07-03-2014 07:27 PM

I was just marveling at my childhood hero Tommy Watson swinging the club and hitting the ball like a man half his age. Besides playing golf what other fitness does he do that keeps him moving like a much younger man? What ever he does I want to copy it.

philfree 07-05-2014 09:30 PM

Callouses:
When I was young I pounded so many golf balls that I developed huge callouses on my left hand. I'd get a ridge of two callouses on my left hand. Once you get callouses they don't go away unless you quit using your hands.

I guess I want to know if there's an effective way to deal with callouses. Well besides sanding them off with an electric finger nail sander like I used to do when I was young.

As I work on my golf game I'm really trying not to developed big callouses that in the end change my grip and take away from my feel. I play much better when my hands are soft and smooth.

Smoooth exchange at the top. Then just look at it and pound it!

I hit a hundred balls or a few more and played five holes today. I hit a few practice shots as I played as well and practiced putting on the holes I played. It didn't feel that great but I put in the work. It'll pay off in a couple of days.

I tried to make a putter change and a stance change and it wasn't working. Something I came up with while I was having a cocktail the other night. It worked great in the basement that night but in the daylight today no so much. Got to be careful about drinking, basement golf ideas. Think I'll return to what I was doing before.

Speaking of tournnements I got a bundle of free passes for the Web.com Price Cutter Charity Championship today. We've been providing the scoring building out there for several years now. This we're having a brand new building built just for them for their 25 year anniversary. We donate the use of the building to them and we get a bunch of free passes, club passes with free food and drink and a few skybox passes. Should be big fun.

Well I played the next leg of the little amateur tour I joined yesterday at River Cut GC here in Springfield. Besides the medal play I also had a match. It was an up and down round where I didn't drive the ball very well. Hell I hit one in the river.:doh!: However, before the day was through I made 5 birdies and won my match 2&1. It was a good match and it was all square at the turn with both players shooting 37 on the front 9. I was one down a few times but each time he won a hole I answered with a birdie.

We both got off to a shaky start on the back 9 with bogeys on 10 where I got lucky twice and ended up in a bunker and not the water. Then I won the 11th hole with a bogey to go one up for the first time in the match. That was a spark for me as I followed that with birdies on two of the next three holes to go 3 up. Then on the par 3 15th, a hole where I have some bad history, I hit a beautiful little wedge to 10' right below the hole. If I make the putt the match is over. I relaxed and promptly blew it 2' above the hole and of course it was a nasty little left to righter. I missed it and lost the hole. I could have closed the door and instead I jarred it open.:doh!:

Then on the next two holes I made two big time clutch putts to close out the match. Two of the best putts I think I've ever made. Right through the heart.

On the par 5 18th I hit a 3 wood off the tee. I nutted it and then followed that with a perfect lay up with an 8 iron and then I hit a knock down wedge to 6' and drained it for the bird, a 74 and the win in the medal play.

That's three wins in the last three starts. For a haggard old golfer it feels real good. Really good.

My game has completely fallen to shit. I can't chip within 100 yards of the green, My drives go anywhere but straight, and unless I'm in the fairway, swinging out of the rough is an adventure. I'm in golf hell right now - as frustrated as I have been since I started actively playing again 6 years ago.

Not going to play another round until I take a few lessons and figure out WTF went wrong. I'm miserable :banghead:

I guess it isn't just me then, but it's only my driver that has gone to hell in a hand basket.
In the past two weeks I've played three rounds and I don't think I've hit more than three fairways in any of them and I have no flipping clue what I'm doing. If it was all missing right or left I could probably fix it, but it's left, right, top, just whatever.
I decided last night to try and play nine and leave the driver in the bag and use the three wood and that didn't seem to help either. I hit one fairway out of the seven and that one was topped so bad it went about 150 yards.

Same thing happened to me but I was playing with a rotator cuff injury and trying not to reinjure my lower back.

I've taken 6 months off to rehab those injuries. I've been to the range a couple times and seem to have straightened out some of my issues. I'm still working on getting past the shoulder injury before I hit the course again.

It's awful to play like that, especially when you know you can do better. It's embarrassing to be THAT guy in your foursome where your partners are saying "it's not that bad" or "just hit another ball". I'm not that guy, and I'm way to competitive to settle for shitty play. I'm headed to the Pro this week to see if I can reel my game back in. I know for a fact that part of my problem is the six inch course between my ears. I have a hell of a time shaking off a bad hole.

McIlroy is crushing the field for what looks to be his 3rd career major. He'd be the only one to do that by the age of 25 other than Jack and Tiger. Pretty remarkable.

Rory McIlroy's dad will cash in 10-year-old bet if his son wins the British Open

McIlroy's fall tomorrow could be epic

The last two times he's been in this position he's won by 8 strokes.

The British Open has seen some epic collapses but I'm not sure I'd bet on this being one of them.

The other amazing thing was Tom Watson making the cut. He's going to be playing British Opens when he's 90. Not really, but he's still out there playing right with some of the big names, and outplaying others in this event.

Watson was a childhood hero and now that I'm old he's still my hero. That said I hit 50 drivers in a row today. That's a good bit of work. I teed up ten balls in a row and then I methodically hit each ball going through my whole routine. I'd hit ten and then I'd tee up the next ten. Then I'd put the club down towel off, take a drink of water, towel off, do some stretches and then methodically hit the 10 teed up balls. I went through that process 5 times. It was a great work out. In the end I hit probably 110 balls but in the middle of it all I hit 50 drivers in a row. I'll be sore but it will be a good kind of sore.

It seems like every tournament, he's finishing behind Spieth. That has to sting him. With Tiger out of action, Nike is getting creamed on their endorsement spend.

How about Oakley? Loses Rory right before he tanks, retains Bubba Watson.

I'm going to call myself out for this because Rory is taking me to the woodshed. With a metal rake.

tk13 07-19-2014 08:22 PM

I think it just goes to show how great Tiger really was. Or Nicklaus. Being in contention at every single major is super hard. Although even Tiger had a couple droughts when he was younger.

stonedstooge 07-20-2014 05:28 AM

Watson shoots a 68 in his final round. Ends up at 1 over. For all us older fellows REPRESENT

displacedinMN 07-20-2014 08:43 AM

down to 4.

Rory having a bit of issues.

Others playing ok.

stonedstooge 07-20-2014 08:55 AM

Down to 3.

Collar getting a little tight.

I dunno. If SeRgio is the guy applying the pressure, he'll suffer a fantastic meltdown. There's little room for error for the guys trailing. (IMO)

His caddy shouldn't let him look at a scoreboard. This is getting interesting.

displacedinMN 07-20-2014 09:08 AM

My wife wants that blue line when she tees off too.

KC_Connection 07-20-2014 09:14 AM

Too late, he looked at it.

WilliamTheIrish 07-20-2014 09:15 AM

Sergio feeling the heat of just getting close. Nice hybrid club putt tho.
