They lost me after the last season with way too heavy of a political message. But, this trailer shows hope of getting back to more of a season one vibe. We’ll see, I might give it a shot.

The message wasn't as bad as most shit they are putting out these days but it was there. Not enough for me to give a shit about but it was there.

Imagine trying to watch a fun commentary on what superheroes would likely devolve into in the real world, only to be reminded that white supremacy is bad...again, and again, and again. But remember, you are Joseph Goebbels for wanting a break from culture War bullshit.

They did that and also tied it to conservatives. It was pretty easy to see. But whatever, it was a good show otherwise so I watched it and will continue to do so.

Are we all just ignoring that the AOC stand in is an ultra baddie or is it only pandering when it criticizes ideology we personally identify with?

I don't recall her saying anything about everyone hating on her just wanted to date her and she didn't seem like she was dumber than a bag of rocks so how did they equate her to AOC exactly?

No, just add it to the list of reasons why infusing real life politics into this show is ****ing stupid.

Of course not! It was 100% necessary to remind us of the fact that racism is bad, by making it a central part of the plot to this show. It has made it difficult to enjoy my other sources of entertainment that fail to address racism. I can barely stand to watch Bluey with my kids, knowing it's an episode about cleaning their rooms instead of being reminded of their oppressor status.

I have enjoyed it to a point. I would prefer more full female nudity instead of male however I guess they can do what they want. After all, I am paying for this.

Not going to go into any of the details however I do like how they show that when someone has nothing to lose, you lose any sense of control over them.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely... Have known this as long as humans act emotionally, this will be our fate.

You realize he's EP. Him and Evan picked up options on a ton of comic book properties, they EPed Preacher too, TMNT, Invincible, . . .

That said, yeah it was a wet fart of a comedic scene.

keg in kc 06-18-2022 09:49 PM

I am shocked that a tv series based on a comic book that was a commentary about the shittiness of the bush administration and the war on terror could have anything that could be interpreted as commentary about the shittiness of radical evangelical alt right neonazis and their golden calf, president twittler. Inconceivable!

I don't know if you watch, but there's the concept of satirical viciousness, and then there's the execution.

And while I enjoy the show overall, the fit and finish is pretty ham-handed.

They'll have someone making a point about one issue, and then the chyron, or a reaction soundbite, references a completely unrelated buzzword.

For instance in the last episode, they replayed some of Homelander's speech from the previous episode about how he's tired of pretending he isn't superior to the rest of mankind, and the banner at the bottom of the broadcast said something about 'Homelander complains about cancel culture.'

That's a case of not respecting the intricacy of the source narrative and just wanting to insert buzzword snark.

Like I say, I mostly enjoy the show, . . . but the satire 'updating' is pretty amateurish.

BigBeauford 06-19-2022 06:21 AM

Is it?

Or is it consistent with the source material?

The comics were a satirical reflection of how shitty super power human beings would actually be, paralleling the challenges ordinary folks face with power, self-delusion, greed, and loss of inhibitions, while also exploring the dangers of unchecked, unmitigated corporate self-interest and manipulation.

It is a vehicle intended to shine a reductio ad absurdum light on our American society and make people think about things that might flit by unnoticed in your day-to-day grind.

If it makes you uncomfortable, it is functioning as intended.

Oh, and I just remembered, when they introduced Supersonic and they had to remind us several times he was hispanic because he looked like a regular fratboy dudebro boybander, . . . and it turns out it was just to pay off the joke where Homelander orders him a Vaught Taco Salad.

On one hand, a teensy bit clever and funny, . . . on the other incredibly ham-handed, desperate and shoehorned.

Were they reminding the viewers? Or were the characters in the show talking about it as an example of token minority representation?

Baby Lee 06-19-2022 11:53 PM

Here's another, from previous season. . .

<iframe width="630" height="354" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ayj0l8TfmPU" title="The Boys- Homelander/George Bush speech parallels" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So I get he's satirizing Dubya's bravado, but if you accept the implications of the satire as written, given that Homelander explicitly and directly downed the airliner himself . . . then you've signed onto more crazy than any of the 9/11 was an inside job folks. . . . But you do you folks.

Lol, yeah, that was......something. You knew it was going to be bad when they put the disclaimer at the front of the episode, haha. I expected more, or better, out of the action finale. It was GOOD, but I felt it should have been better.

Soldier Boy's hubris will force him to take 24 V, because he hates to be 2nd best which will kill him or make him permabadass.

I don't think it's still out of the realm of possibilities. They seemed to foreshadow some by having crimson say the same to him that maeve said to homelander about always hating him.

It was definitely not the ending I expected. I’m not going to go and complain that the writers are being woke, but I could do without all of the politics that they are increasingly adding into the show. It seems like they are going out of their way to add all of these political references when it does nothing but detract from the show.

The writers are definitely woke. Everything from the episode descriptor (stop starlight from drinking children's adrenaline!), to the final scene which was
Spoiler!
. The show is at its best delving into the cynicism of superheroes in a capitalistic world, but this season was extra extra with its on the nose 2020s political references that won't make a lick of sense a few years from now. It's a damn shame because there are some great characters here, a great setting, and they are diminishing the legacy with each cheap shot.
