I HATE the fact that Johnny Cash covered that song!!! HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!!!! In a way, him covering that song has ruined that awesome NIN song for me... and it all has to do with how people responded to his version compared to Trent's and people thinking NIN covered it!!! Even when I hear Trent's version now, I catch myself thinking about how much the cover pisses me off. And I wouldn't mind the cover if I didn't feel NIN's version was disrespected as a result of it/mixed up as being the cover itself.... I mean, hell....it was a HUGE pat on the back for Trent, from Johnny that he wanted to cover that song...who would have guessed Johnny Cash was merely familiar with NIN tunes?!?!?!

If it wasn't for Cash stealing the song, NiN may have actually been something, right?

Reznor himself gushed over the cover, and even said the song wasn't his anymore after Cash's version. Cash's version is the quintessential version of the song, like it or not.

NIN was something prior to the remake.

And no...he didn't exactly "gush" over it. Look into it more. The interviews I've read/seen from him regarding the remake have indicated an opinion of being mixed in terms of his feelings regarding it.

This song was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett, and came out on a Delaney & Bonnie record as well sung by Rita Coolidge on Mad Dogs & Englishmen- the Carpenters version, though the biggest hit, is actually a cover.

have you ever seen the movie that Jane's/Ice-T clip is from??

It's called "GIFT" and it's quite simply a mind****. A 90 minute montage of Lolla-era Jane's interspersed with Perry and Casey's macabre drug-induced home movie about loving a corpse...

'Don't Call Me' is actually the least uneasy moment in the whole film. It's like a release...

I like both versions, but give the edge to NIN - the piano is harrowing, and adds a suspense to the accompanying narrative, which is more purely self-loathing with Reznor's pleading delivery.

Plus I prefer the lyrics in their unaltered state.

This is the original. Much older but still very good version of the song. You can feel the island in the music. That's what makes it magical to me, I can picture Jamaica when I hear it.

I love the Monkees! There I said it, and this isn't a bad cover at all.
