Naw, he doesn't have a bad feel. There were times where he would dish some really nice passes. He just played like a lost freshman down the stretch. I think he may end up being the typical Bill Self project that turns into a stud by his senior year.

Just my .02.

I’d think so.

Weak draft class means he’ll go higher than he should.

He isn’t eligible for NIL.

I don’t see any reason for him to come back, though I’d love it if he did.

RaidersOftheCellar 05-03-2024 08:23 AM

Insiders think Furphy is 100% gone.

Elmarko has something you can't teach or learn.

He's really fast.

If he can just fix *waves arms* all THIS

Not only did he have to learn how to play with another PG, he had to learn it while playing at the University of Kansas, and also while playing a bunch of games against Top 10 teams, and then Top 25 teams.

Plus, he also had to learn to play defense the Bill Self Way.

Like, that's a lot of crap to throw at a kid in his first year of college basketball.

I am not saying he is great, but you can clearly see the talent, and if you pay attention to him during games, you can see his brain working instead of just playing.

If he had left, I would have understood, and I think it says a lot about him that he stayed. He could have left like a lot of players, such as Grimes (although it eventually worked out for him) but he didn't.

I agree. EJ just didn't know how to play the game without the ball in his hands. I think he makes a big leap next year if he's given the minutes.

He’s an NBA athlete. No doubt about that.

If basketball doesn’t work, give him to Leipold to just run some 9 routes.

No Kugel.

Would’ve been a fine depth piece. No major loss though with the other signings.

I believe Coleman Hawkins is in the portal. With all the guards we have now, he might be a better fit.

6’10” PF who can shoot the 3. We haven’t been linked to him if he drops out of the draft, but we also didn’t really have room before.

I haven't been following Kugel at all, just saw something the other day that was basically Self saying "Not sure he's coming here." What was the deal with that?

KC_Connection 05-08-2024 02:14 PM

If I were them, I’d try to get another backup big who rebounds. KJ remains basically incapable of grabbing defensive rebounds apparently.

which is absolutely insane, with that kind of athleticism he should be a way better rebounder. It just doesn't make sense

Some sort of academic issue. Doesn’t sound like it was a surprise.

At Kansas, we have a pretty high bar for our student athletes. We’d never prioritize success on the court over success in the classroom.

I’d say maybe playing next to Dickinson took away some boards, but he sucked when he was playing the 5 the year before too.

Coleman Hawkins would be a dream but if Im him Im chasing the NBA Draft and Id go to a team that will showcase me front and center.

Never was high on Kugel. Even said so after he was early tranfer commit. Was very disappointed at that point as he was penciled in as started until we got some real guys in Mayo and Storr.

I’d like that a lot better than Kugel.

Legit shooter with some size. Perfect rotational wing.

We could even model our rotation after the 22 championship team.

Mayo takes the Remy role. Harris is Harris. Dickinson for Big Dave.

Then Storr, Griffen, and Robinson play that sorta interchangeable 2-3-4 like we had with Braun, Agbaji, and Wilson.

KJ becomes the energy big again. Bidunga takes Lightfoot’s role.

Anything you get from the freshmen or Elmarko/McDowell is a bonus.

Not a KU thing other than we lost to them in the tournament, but GODDAMN those Nova teams had some ****ing sick talent. Hart Divenchenzo, Bridges, Brunson, Arcidiacono. Those few years put a ****ton of talent in to the league. And apparently Brunson of all of them is like infallable? Jesus.

Have we ever had a starting 5 where everyone could shoot the 3 like that?

Maybe Tharpe, Selden, Wiggins, Ellis, and Embiid?

None of them were “great” shooters though. Embiid also barely shot the 3 back then.

Jay Wright would love this.

As the NCAA's withdrawal deadline approaches, teams have indicated Furphy has only worked out for spots in the lottery. His decision whether to return to Kansas will likely go down to the wire, depending on how the coming days go and whether he likes his options. Scouts have been intrigued by Furphy's mix of size, skill and smooth athleticism, particularly at his age and early stage of physical development.

Ceej 05-30-2024 05:36 AM

Furphy officially gone, to nobody's surprise.

I sure hope he turns into something.

While I really dislike the NBA I'll always watch if there are some Jayhawks playing.

I would like to have seen Furphy another year in a Jayhawk uniform, but the lack of NIL for international players put that in the very low likelihood category.

Best of luck to the young man.

smithandrew051 05-30-2024 10:01 AM

The draft is just so so bad this year. He would’ve been dumb to come back.

I’ll always remember Sherron being a fringe first round pick after his sophomore and junior years, then going undrafted. A lot of Damon Stoudamire comps.

If you can be a first round pick (especially lottery), just go. The chance might not be there the next year.

The Blake Griffin’s who really elevate their stock (when they would’ve been first rounders anyway) are pretty rare.

Kiimo 05-30-2024 11:43 AM

Especially if you are blocked from receiving NIL cash which is just so dumb

Probably had something to do with it. He wasn’t near as explosive his senior year.

Would’ve been wise to go after the Title or maybe his junior year.

Having too much tape or exposure really seems to hurt your draft stock, unless you’re an otherworldly talent.

Kiimo 05-30-2024 12:22 PM

If I was scraping change together to get a 5 piece nugget and two jr bacon cheesburgers at the Wendy's drive-thru on 6th and Iowa in 1997 and someone came up to my car and knocked on the window and said if you leave college right now I'll pay you 12 million dollars I'd still go through the drive thru and get my food. But then drive away

just saying Wendy's dollar menu for poor college kids is top tier

What's honestly frustrating about Furphy leaving, probably for the reasons you said, is that basically every other fringe guy returned to school for NIL I guess. You would have thought a weak draft would hurt most teams with fringe NBA guys but instead everyone returned and it will be a deep year for the top 10.

Ceej 05-30-2024 02:57 PM

I'm a very casual NBA fan.

But, I sure wish there were more Jayhawks in the league to root for.

Obviously Embiid being the cream of the crop, and Gradey potentially balling out his sophomore year in the league.

Everyone else is just meh.

Here's hoping Furphy continues to develop and can be a solid role player in the league.

The last two years, with fewer schollies, we just didn’t have more than 6 or 7 competent players.

Self played 8 in 2022 (Remy, Lightfoot, and JCL off the bench), 9 if you count KJ Adams spot minutes.

We should be good.

Obviously Self knows what he's doing. But I thought he was missing the boat a few times by paring down the roster too much. Especially when some dudes would hit some serious slumps, getting some other guys some minutes. He can still ride his guys, but getting 8 or 9 minutes of another dude would have had some experience would have had value.

Especially in the Reed/Morningstar years getting some additional athleticism off the bench would have had value I think. Plus I think guys like Reed would have shot a better percentage with some fresher legs.

I'm not here to blast Self, I'm much more apt to make an argument for him being the greatest ever. But that's the way I see it from the couch.
