This episode is great. Half dollar scam, Kevin Costner.

As someone with an interest in coins, I have a pressing question from last night's episode: Where did the Kennedy half dollar come from that Saul/Jimmy used in the bar scam?
Did he just receive it in change after paying his tab? If so, :shake:

Half dollars in circulation are pretty rare in general, but that was a 1964 Kennedy--the last circulated US coin made in 90% silver--(Kennedys from 1965-1969 are 40% silver). Over the years, just the silver content alone of that coin has ranged from $5-$20, so, they were picked from circulation long ago. Can't say it is impossible, but finding one in circulation astoundingly unlikely.

Anyway, Jimmy's story about it being a rare version isn't true of course, but it isn't completely off-base. The Kennedy half was rushed into production after his assassination (it replaced the Benjamin Franklin half, not a Lincoln as Jimmy said). After an initial batch was made, the story is that Jackie Kennedy didn't like how the profile looked. Some cosmetic changes were made, but the original coins were released--maybe 100,000 of them of the 500M minted. Collectors can tell the difference by the smoother hair lines. One in great condition could be worth several hundred, maybe $1000.

I actually found that episode to be the worst of the season. It wasn't bad writ large (it was comparatively, though), just protracted and predictable.

Yeah I kind of agree, but, it will lead us to an interesting Season 2.

The End.

Awesome Story Bro.

Jimmy doesn't give a SHIT if big bro believes in him. He's not devastated by any of this. It's been a bummer, but it has liberated him from from his prior role of ****-up little bro who needs guidance, allowing him to decide for himself his own code.

I completely disagree. I don't see that at all. Jimmy is deeply hurt by what Chuck thinks of him. It's less about him needing guidance, but more about wanting his big brother's approval who clearly has never approved of his lifestyle. His brother's disapproval just makes him mad, and want to rebel, leading into the life of slipping Jimmy all over again.

I'm not sure that is 'complete disagreement'

I'm not arguing that Chuck's shitty standards didn't sting Jimmy, just that it didn't destroy him, leaving only a husk behind.

The point is he has now gotten beyond needing external approval. He's not rebelling, or trying to prove himself worthy by alternative means. He's through giving a shit what 'they' think.

GOULD: He’s definitely not going to proceed as he has. That is true. I think the end of the season definitely portends some big changes for this guy. His brother stabbed him in the back and lied about it and Chuck, although he’s perfectly law abiding, does something that in Jimmy’s eyes and maybe mine too is really rather despicable. That has shaken his world. It’s turned him upside down.

“Without a doubt, he … broke bad,” co-creator Peter Gould told TheWrap in an interview on Monday. “Jimmy McGill … reverted to his old life as Slippin’ Jimmy.”
The Bob Odenkirk character’s brother Chuck (Michael McKean) backstabbing the protagonist was the catalyst that “really changed [Jimmy’s] outlook on life,” Gould explained of the switcheroo. But when old friend and scam partner Marco (Mel Rodriguez) kicked the bucket mid-swindle, something more permanent clicked inside of the future Saul Goodman.

some interesting convo in here about whether he's crushed or just doesn't give a shit.
I think it's both. at first he was crushed.....then came to an acceptance.....then moved on. unfortunately in the interest of time I don't think it played very well in 45 minutes of television. in the real world it WOULD take time to digest.....be ****ING PISSED OFFFFF.....for a while actually.....and then get to acceptance (Jimmy shrugs and says "my brother thinks I'm scum and I've realized nothing I can do will ever change that)....and then move past it. but in TV world they don't wanna use 2 or 3 episodes for this transition.

before watching the latest episode I went back and watched the Chuck/Jimmy exchange where Jimmy called him out. amazing scene. as soon as Chuck realized Jimmy knew....his facial expression changed to one of.....ugh....just....it just repulsed me. arrogant. mean. almost evil.
**** you chuck!
