This is our chance to own the Haka in the NFL. Would be an incredible addition to the 3peat run, instill fear into our enemies.

Then you have guys like Taysom Hill who was also a QB but now does different things. So is transitioning from QB to WR any different than what this guy is doing? It's all a learning process at the end of the day. His dad played in NFL Europe so his knowledge of the game may be way more advanced than those who have tried to cross over before.

Jordan Mailata worked out REALLY well. No reason this can't as well.

Niners had a gimmick rugby guy a few years ago that was exciting for a couple of games and then disappeared lol.

Chiefs have so much talent though so why not?

He’s in prison now:

Jarryd Hayne, a rugby league star who also played briefly in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, has been sentenced to at least three years and eight months in jail for the sexual assault of a woman.

Fast and can run all day so that's a plus. We'll see if he can do anything else.

He doesn't count against the roster, because he is from the Pathways program, right? He would basically be the 91st roster spot.

Yeah, running with pads on is a little different, so I am curious about how he thinks that affects his speed.

I think he's young enough and from what I've heard brash enough to not give a sheet.

Playing balls-out he's also the this years candidate to most-likely-to-get-injured.

I believe Andy can go into the lab and find a niche for him as a weapon. I hope he gets a chance. Looks like Kelce's new prodigy.

Haynie made the team and played a full season. He retired on his own from playing in the NFL.

I played football and rugby in college. Not sure why folks are saying this guy will be a TE. Flankers in rugby are TE equivalent. Wingers are WR / RB type players. Pads won't affect speed. His lack of HS/College play time will be the reason he doesn't succeed in the NFL. He is clearly athletic enough to play.

He'd be the smallest NFL TE I've ever seen, by a wide margin.

Correct. He doesn't count against the 53 man roster or the practice squad. Which is the reason the Chiefs are giving him a shot. He doesn't take the spot of some maybe future contributor.

No way in hell. He is waaaaay too small for a TE. Listed at 194lb and is 6'4"

POND_OF_RED 03-29-2024 10:36 AM

The guys a real special talent. English clubs usually stay away from picking up Celtic players due to old rivalries. The fact that he is Welsh playing for an English club and the fact that it didn’t lose him his spot on the national team says a whole lot about what a special talent he is. That shit is VERY rare in rugby. He’s a bit of a bitch in rugby terms as far as shying away from big hits, but his speed and goose step are absolutely elite. He’s gonna make a hell of a returner in my opinion and could definitely become a decent depth option at receiver. Don’t see him lining up at RB much. He needs to get the ball in more space to utilize his skillsets.

displacedinMN 03-29-2024 10:41 AM

Pads don't matter. Rugby is FAR more difficult to play than football from a physical standpoint. Have to be in way better shape as it is perpetual motion. The real question everyone should be asking: How high is his ass?

No offence but it's not unusual for Welsh players to play for English clubs. Especially Gloucester. He's pretty quick and he'll be used as a returner and realistically anything else would be a surprise and a great bonus

That's a big damned running back, especially for an Andy offense.

Camp fodder normally doesn't get treated like this either.

Unless this is also a marketing play by the business guys.

He's got a 3 year deal that includes guaranteed money. Definitely not camp fodder.

Beyond special teams he may get jet sweeps and/or toss plays.

Reid will give him some playing time in the pre-season games and he will be popular at training camp.

Dante84 03-29-2024 04:57 PM

Guys who run 24mph, are used to carrying/catching a weird shaped ball, are used to being hit and tackled to the ground aren’t out there just floating around. That’s a guy you sign and develop. Especially when he’s 6’3 /219 and only 23.

There is only one draw back to that. In Rugby if you fumble the ball, it isn’t the end of the world if the other team recovers it, you just immediately start beating the s**t out of them.

Camp fodder? Chiefs gave him a 3 year deal. He will contribute some how some way or they wouldn’t have gave him a 3 year deal. Just an invite to training camp = camp fodder

Jet sweep trailed by mahomes, lateral to pachecho, lateral to this guy and gone.

Just remember to tell him if he is behind the line of scrimmage, he can forward pass.

My question would be how much guaranteed money. Because "3 years with some guaranteed money" would also describe basically all UDFA contracts.

This is his Michael Jordan baseball moment. Curious to see if he’s more successful in this endeavor than MJ.

Megatron96 03-29-2024 06:37 PM

Sounds like they might be trying to have this guy take over part of MVS' role, at least the go-route stuff, maybe a couple gadget plays, and STs. Doubt he'll be able to do much more than something like that. He has no release package, no route-running experience, no understanding of leverage, how to decipher defensive alignments, etc. Wouldn't expect him to just pick up all of that stuff in a single OTA/TC. And then he would have to digest the playbook, and for a guy that's ever seen a football playbook that is going to be something of struggle right off the bat.

He can return kickoffs especially with the single line of defense. They can learn the tush push. He’d be great at that or run the qb sneak but sometime fake it and throw that lateral to Pacheco on the outside.

Andy isn't going to start running the tush push.

Like I said, gadget stuff and STs. That's what he's going to do, if anything because we're assuming he'll actually suit up in 2024, which is still completely up in the air right now.

Some of what you have here is undoubtedly why they plan to use him as an RB too. There are far fewer potentially negative outcomes running the ball than having him at WR until he can learn more of the nuances. Throw in some screens and quick crossers or something and kick/punt return duties.

Anything more than that until year 2 is probably asking for a minor miracle.

Yeah, maybe he could do some RB stuff. We're really banking on the idea that he's pretty damn smart and will pick up the game, or the basics, in a pretty short period of time, and be competent. We'll see how that works out. Assuming he gets through TC.

Gary Cooper 03-29-2024 08:19 PM

Forrest Gump didn't know the rules either but was an All-American kick returner at Alabama.

So essentially a shittier version of Deanthony Thomas, and he will be ritualistically slaughtered every time he sees the field, because the only time he's on the field it will be a play for him specifically.

Couch-Potato 03-29-2024 08:31 PM

So we essentially get to have an extra athlete on the practice squad if we sign a foreigner from this exchange program? So no reason not to take a shot I guess.

He can return kicks. If that’s all he does, that’s okay because it’s a free roster spot.

Andy is hurting the team by not allowing Mahomes to do a QB sneak. He needs to do something different this year.

he can be on the game roster. On the practice squad. Be on the practice squad and get promoted to the active roster with all those scenarios don’t take up a spot.

Thats why he can return kicks and not play any other special teams in the game.

In58men 03-29-2024 09:30 PM

All of a sudden I’m on board thinking he’s the next McCaffrey, sometimes I hate it here.

I’ll prolly buy his jersey next week

Holladay 03-29-2024 09:30 PM

Isn't there a special drop kick type of play? Not used that much, but he seems to be able to do that. Not sure if this is relevant or not...

A player can only be elevated from the practice squad a certain number of times, I think 3. Plus if he's any good somebody will probably try and sign him.

I would guess if he makes the team this year it'll be because he's a 4-phase special teamer. I know somebody said earlier that tackling wasn't his strong suit in rugby, but does have the experience doing it. With his athleticism he could be useful on kick coverage teams.

for regular players. Not for this exception. That’s the whole reason for the exception. They want these guys making it on teams. Part of the whole NFL strategy to take the game global.

They can do whatever they want with him without consideration of roster spots.

There’s a reason he’s signing with the World Champions, and Andy Reed.

NFL wants publicity and more international markets, and Andy will scheme a few special thing up for him to be sure he leads Sports Center in preseason…at a minimum.

It’s all about winning and repeating for us fans, so this is going to get fun, one way or another.

Wonder if the Chiefs will be offered Hard Knocks…

I'm not sure what this is based on, everything I've seen is that the exception is just an extra practice squad spot. The normal rules still apply otherwise.

I've watched a few reports from the UK sports press about LRZ and am impressed with their knowledge of the Chiefs. It's pretty cool that our success has translated into an international following.

I read somewhere where he had run practice 40s in the 4.3s and he hasn’t probably had the same time of track training /coaching most of the college kids get specifically to run at at the combine , not playing football might only be the issue but it sounds like his dad played some American football , if he was a fan and watch the game /played madden etc.. some natural feel for space it could see him transitioning. Would be a cool story

I’ve read that somewhere, too. He was disappointed in his 4.43-4.45 time. The guy is FAST! I know most rugby players don’t have the elite speed that NFL players have. But, the way he would literally be behind someone ten yards and then blow past them and beat them to the ball is just crazy!

Would be a cool story

I would also expect his short burst speed to improve now that training will be geared towards single play explosiveness rather than 80 minutes stamina endurance as in rugby union. He will also likely bulk up as well adding muscle mass.

Of course he is going to be naive in learning the playcalls and running crisp routes but Andy Reid is smart enough to know that you don’t bring someone in because they can do things you don’t normally see and then try to force them to conform to all the norms of a player in their position. Trying to do that would be like acknowledging that Mahomes is the all time greatest scramble drill improviser in the game yet deciding that because Quarterbacks are traditionally pocket passers you are going to chain him to the pocket.
