Coworker has a daughter that interned for the Royals in the media department last season. She spent most of the home games taking video in one of the of field camera boxes by the home dugout. They hired her fulltime after the season was over. The day after she got the job the Royals told her group they had 2 weeks off paid over Xmas, just keep your phone on if you are needed. Right now she's in AZ covering them. She spent half an hour yesterday talking to George Brett.

Talk about a dream job.

I know when many of the ballparks moved to the city or downtown area, those areas improved overall.

Pittsburgh, Detroit, Baltimore, Washington DC, San Francisco

I believe most are still a positive experience.

It's not because it's a truth post the vast majority of people I see going off about it being a ****ing stupid thing to do are people who are in the "but parking" or "I like the K" or it's some not leaving the suburbs argument.

There is not remotely the same as the argument of I'm not a fan of public money for private profit or funding a billionaire's stadium, it seems a lot of people are fine funding a billionaires stadium if they have parking spots and it's in a suburb.

Hog Rider 02-21-2024 10:47 AM

Will they grandfather in rent and real estate taxes to not increase for current residents of the area? That sounds logical.

You would really have no idea someone lived in a city of 2.5 million people listening to them complain about parking garages and traffic and one way streets... but it's a major topic of conversation if you're ever at an event downtown or even on the Plaza with people who don't often go there.

You would really think they all just drove in from BFE Kansas or someone had grabbed an uncontacted tribesmen from the Amazon and dropped them off at Times Square... but nope, live in OP and just cannot fathom getting around downtown and finding a place to park.

When you propose a 2 billion dollar project and announce it to the folks who you expect to fund it. That proposal makes no mention of parking for 20 to 40 thousand folks on any given day well that sounds like just another un accounted for expense. Parking is premium Downtown and the tennents already surrounding that area may pay in leases for a certain amount of parking for their business. So yeah parking is important and needs to be part of this plan. I would soon they found a way to pay for this on their own but I am not stupid as they will get their way or walk from the area.

Speaking of parking and downtown stadiums - parking in the KC Current's gravel parking lot is apparently being billed to season ticket holders at $68 per game.

'People are freaking out': KC Current fans upset over parking costs at new stadium

Some of Kansas City's soccer fans are concerned after the KC Current announced that it would begin charging season ticket holders for parking this season.

Many fans were left feeling upset after discovering that taxes and fees would result in a cost of nearly $1,000.

After taxes and fees, parking is $68 a game. With 13 regular home games and one tournament game, that adds up to $952.

The parking lots outside the CPKC stadium, where the team plays, are still being built, and are made out of gravel.

Fans say that they are frustrated that there are no payment options and that all the money is due now.

"With the exception of gold parking at a Chiefs game, that will be the most expensive place in the entire city to park any day of the week," said Cherie Gallagher, a fan. "People are frustrated because they feel like you're not getting the option to park somewhere else or other cost options."

The city has permitted 2,300 spaces for parking while the stadium has 11,500 seats, leaving many fans to carpool, rideshare, or get creative.

Season ticket holders have the first chance to buy the spots, but the KC Current says that season ticket holders outnumber the available spaces.

The closest KC Streetcar stop is over a mile away.

Fans are still trying to figure out what to do, with some even posting their tickets up for sale online.

"A lot of people are freaking out quite honestly," said Trina Hawkins, president of the Blue Crew fan club. "People are just stunned and figuring out what to do now. I've already seen people put their tickets up for sale online."

The Current provided this statement to KMBC:

"We have the most passionate fans in the entire NWSL. We are excited to give our Season Ticket Members the first opportunity to purchase limited parking passes available for the new downtown stadium.

We will offer very limited pre-paid single match on-site parking to Current Club members and the rest of our fans at a later date. We are thrilled to offer other solutions that align with our focus on multi-modal and sustainability for off-site parking and transportation, including park-and-ride options, ride-share, streetcar, bus, bike and shuttle services.

Our Season Ticket Members now know that they have the option to purchase season long parking passes. There will also be options for those who need ADA accessible parking, both on-site and off-site. More information about our off-site parking and transportation opportunities will be available in the coming weeks."

I rode the street car once. It was in winter and it was half full of homeless going from midtown to River market and back to stay out of the cold I’d imagine. Had a younger dude with military ptsd trying to tell a few of us his life story while his buddy was knocked out drunk next to him.

I’m guessing this is what happens a lot when it’s freezing or hot as hell out. Maybe they’ll start charging for it and that will change

Mecca would have shed a tear for the dude and gave him 20 bucks I’m sure

dlphg9 02-23-2024 04:28 PM

There is no way this doesn't pass. It's no extra money, so all that's happening is instead of paying for the upkeep of a stadium in Raytown you're paying for a brand new ballpark in down town KC and getting all kinds of new businesses along with it. Don't really see the down side, besides I guess some people might have to walk a little further.

Pablo 02-23-2024 04:28 PM

If you don’t go watch the women’s soccer games and pay for the parking its probably because you’re sexist tbh

In another city where I lived the light rail was a rolling homeless shelter, especially in the winter. It's heated and has wifi, and they unofficially eliminated fares by putting the whole payment thing essentially on the honor system. The last time I rode it I saw a homeless dude just whip it out and piss right on the floor. It used to be mostly unscary at least in the day, but I quit riding it after that.

They eliminated transit cops and stopped checking tickets for reasons you'd have to discuss in over in the DC forum. Seeing people urinate in public had become common in that town, but inside a car on the train was a new one for me. Aggressive panhandlers on the trains were a problem too.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like it if KC had more transit options, but if they aren't going to keep it clean and safe people aren't going to use them.

They’ll be used. There’s a whole subset of urban gen z that practically vomit when they see a car per Reddit. They all busted extra fat nuts over the expansion from River market to Berkeley park. So they better use it

crossroads spot makes too much sense. way more attendance in this location. tons of extra people who might go early/stay late to hang downtown or crossroads. tons of new jobs to take care of all the additional spenders which increases tax revenues for the city. extra money made by royals increases payroll so we field competitive teams that increases attendances even further.

if people are against crossroads location, they hate our city.

You've just described the high point of about 60% of royals games unfortunately

I've been informed this downtown stadium will naturally usher in an era of prosperity so we'll all be so busy watching winning baseball that won't matter.

Pablo 02-23-2024 06:51 PM

The integration with the south loop park that was planned before this announcement is legitimately exciting. We'll see if that thing gets kicked into turbo if this passes. 2026 WC was thrown out originally when that was proposed.

You have much to learn young inf. Also need to stop with assuming things

That's like 2/3 of what makes CP fun though

please advise? genuinely curious on why other locations would be better. the integration with the 670 highline park would be really cool for our city and create way more jobs/spending/tax revenues for the city than any other location.

also i get if people are against bc they don't like subsidizing billionaires in general.

and i get it if you don't like this spot bc of personal reasons. was being hyperbolic in original post - just meant they'd be prioritizing personal stuff over the greater good of the city/community. which everybody does.

and i'll admit my bias - i want the royals to have a good team. they'd make so much more in attendance/revenues at the crossroads spot than any other so they could finally pay enough in salaries to be relevant.

added bonus is increased jobs/taxes to make my city better.

you prefer locations that give our city fewer jobs and less tax revenues for city programs? why? crossroads location would undoubtedly be better overall for the city.

LMAO

I know I wouldn't walk 10 feet for a women's soccer game. Well if there is nudity maybe. Is there nudity?

You would really think they all just drove in from BFE Kansas or someone had grabbed an uncontacted tribesmen from the Amazon and dropped them off at Times Square... but nope, live in OP and just cannot fathom getting around downtown and finding a place to park.

KC is under 500,000 the other 1.5 million live in the suburbs and drive cars like a red-blooded Americans.

dude explain why you are laughing? kansas city karens are the worst. no new airport, no public transportation, all i do is cry about parking/traffic. royals would kill at this spot and make way more tax revenue and help for the city. but nooo i'm so mad at how this will take away my favorite bar that opened up a year ago and will go away next year!!!

i love the diverseness/indie spirit of the crossroads as much as the next guy. and maybe a little bit of this goes away but it will really benefit all the breweries and the good local spots. will be way better for KC if this goes through.

I think it's a great thing to happen. Opposing fans will enjoy the improved downtown area while bringing in cash into the area. Welcome everyone but hope they Royals win.

dabergtobirden 02-23-2024 10:37 PM

i understand if total progressives or i hate all business/giving tax dollars to sports franchises hate this bc they are idiots...but there are actual chiefs/sports fans or normal regular people that don't like this? blows my mind. it's the best thing this city has ever proposed. have you guys looked at the images and how cool this will be for our city? just have realized many people are stupid and don't want change. they should move to small towns where they don't have to worry about parking.

It wont do jack squat till they get real ownership that is serious about winning baseball. Shyster Sherman ain't that.
