Someone update me on Turnpike. Have we seen the last of them?!?!

I heard Kyle was working on his own music but I have only heard a single so far from him.

Felker, has he got his shit together yet?!?!

I miss them dearly.

Buehler445 06-28-2020 10:25 PM

The interview with Nix is the best I could find.

I only recently became aware of Tyler Childers when the band I'm in decided to do a cover of this song, but the more I look into his music the more I'm digging his style.

Iowanian 06-29-2020 08:17 AM

Tyler Childers is an animal. Dig deeper. He's awesome.

My favorite song isn't even recorded, "Peace of Mind".

I haven't heard anything about Turnpike other than I saw them push some Merch online a couple of weeks ago that gave people some hope. I assume they're just dumping inventory and trying to make some money. Nix and RC are doing solo things.

Nix's album dropped on June 26 I found. I gave it a listen.

Music is good and who doesn't love a great fiddle player. Lyrics are fine and similar in story telling while being more ominous than Turnpike.

However, there's a reason he wasn't the lead singer of the Troubadours.....

Pablo 08-15-2020 08:57 PM

Tyler Childers is the present and future of country music. He's what I'm listening to mostly lately. Learned about him thru this thread and my pandora started playing some of his stuff and every single song is a classic. If he's wrote a bad one I haven't heard it yet.

Maybe this guy has been mentioned in this thread. Literally listened to a couple songs off this album for the first time ever via FB friend and I can tell it's damn good stuff. Just hits you right away.

Arlo McKinley -Die Midwestern is the album.

I haven't seen any discussion on it here, but have you heard the latest Sturgill Simpson "Cutting Grass" Butcher Shoppe sessions?

He does several of his songs in a bluegrass sound, and there are some others. It's a great "garage" or "listen in the shop" playlist. Honestly I hadn't been the biggest fan of the last couple of albums, but I like this.

You're welcome.

His fan base is much more Colorado stoner hippie.

Love me some Billy M.F. Strings, been seeing him for years. His performances with Marcus King are incredible.

I just checked the release date of the album and the internet says October of 2020. Is that correct? I hope so, because this sounds more like the Sturgill Simpson I liked. I stopped paying attention to him when he released that horrible movie soundtrack on Netflix.

Yes, Oct. 2020 is correct. It's a great album. Rides that bluegrass line more than the country line.

The Netflix Samurai album thing was a complete miss. I like to pretend that just didn't happen...

Speaking with him in person, he doesn’t come off that way. He is definitely one of those people that eats, breathes, and shits music though. Maybe not autistic, but definitely a little different.

True story-about 2 weeks ago I saw the Hear Ya session video of “before the devil knows you’re dead” and I’ve been hooked ever since. Those guys are flat out amazing. I’ve been driving my wife and kids nuts with their music ever since.

I’ve yet to find a song of theirs that I don’t like.

Some of my favorites-

Down here.
The winding stair mountain blues.
Pipe bomb dream.
The hard way.
The house fire.
The bird hunters.
1968.
The funeral.
Kansas City southern.
And probably my favorite song of theirs, Long drive home.

They are just fantastic. I just discovered them and I already miss them.

Coming soon....I'm also told there is a cryptic photo and message on instagram or something as well.

But yeah, there was a reason he didn't front TT. His voice lacks the "it" factor.

Boland has been a staple and pioneer in Red Dirt/Texas Music and has a pretty extensive list of songs. He touches on subjects of alcohol, drugs, social injustice among others.
Jason Boland had a vocal chord issue a couple of years ago that about killed his career, but the guy still has pipes.

The base player is from Kansas City, always sports Royals and Chiefs caps and is a damn nice guy to talk to. Grant has a youtube cooking show.

First up, my favorite song on the new album. The Dark and Dirty Mile
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/2s_JiVSouO4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Some of my favorites:
Dark and Dirty Mile
Lucky I guess
Cormall County Blues
Blowing Through the Hills
Gallo Del Cielo This song is about a mexican fighting rooster
Bottle by my bed
When I'm stoned (a Colorado resident favorite)
Gear and Dust
Devil Pays in Gold
Noone left to blame
False Accusers Lament

There are many others, but these are the ones I like the best right now.
Gear and Dust...Live with Cody Canada accoustic
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/8EJJe4vwpjI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This is a youtube playlist with a pretty good overview of Boland's stuff

Boland might be #2 for me behind TT.

Sucks that The Bourbon Legend album isn't on Spotify. It has gems on it.

His music is just country with clever lyrics. In a just world, he is a Nashville legend.

Other songs I like:
Bulletproof
How was California?
God Forsaken Town
Seven Nights in Eire (Not sure that one falls under Red Dirt, but it's a great song)
Nobody's Girl

But like I said, they're all pretty damn good.

There is an Irish country music singer who does a killer cover of Seven Nights in Eire.

Lots of smoke nothing officially official yet. I had heard a rumor that the band was getting back together with a new front man, but I didn’t want to believe it. TT wouldn’t be TT without Evan.

Then the picture that they posted included Evan, so who knows.

Boland pours it on man. That’s why I dig it. You can ****ing feel the emotion in his voice. Proud Souls is a song you feel more than hear. There aren’t a ton of dudes out there that convey that level of internal pain through music. He’s really ****ing good.

Unlike the paint by numbers mother****ers that come out of Nashville like Luke Bryant et al.

Figured this song would resonate with some folks here. This thread has been dead as shit for 8 months! Shameful!

This really isn't my flavor of music but I did enjoy it. I could get drunk to that.

Since I'm not young and angry anymore my ears have been more open to things I wouldn't have listened to in the past. I listened to the Sturgill Simpson interviews on Rogan a while back and his story about when he had a break in really convinced me to give country musicians another listen. I know he's light years away from this thread but the point is I'm open to at least give it a chance now.

I was reading an email from Knuckleheads and saw that Kyle Nix, fiddler for the Turnpike Troubadours, was performing this Wednesday at Knuckleheads in support of his new solo album, Lightening on the Mountain. Tickets are only 15 dollars.
