Red, Earlier this month, things just weren't right. I was tired all the time. Then I got dizzy spells. Had a few at work and they told me to go to the ER. Turns out my Blood Pressure meds were too high and a bad mix...I was dehydrated so bad I had kidney problems...and heart issues. Long story short I have 7 blockages in my arteries...40% up to the two 70% and one 75% I am too far gone to be eligible for stints. IF I don't reverse the blockage, the only way is bypass. Eating bad, smoking and drinking like a fish all contributed to this.

I haven't smoked since the 3rd, nor drank. I am on a heart healthy diet. You are making a great decision unless you want to be 58, in a hospital for 7 days and wondering if you're gonna have to have your chest opened. I am dealing with withdrawal of nicotine AND alcohol. But I sure don't want my chest cracked open.

When they asked me how much I drank, I said, "About a gallon a week." Of what they asked. "Tequila".

Let's you and me live a lot longer and fight the good fight. I am here if you want an ear. I will be going through the same things you will. Hell, I already am. But let's do it and live a lot longer!

This is not a brag, but my old man is pushing 70. He still smokes damn near 2 packs a day.

For years he had this crazy ass routine EVERY DAY of my childhood. Work hard, crack a beer first thing. He'd put down 4-6 beers while dinner was being prepared (if he was grilling, he'd burn whatever he was cooking). Once dinner started, it was whiskey and water. He'd pass out between 8 and 9 PM, wake up about 2:30, make a new drink, go to bed, and then wake up at 5. At his worst he was going through a full gallon a night and was buying shit by the case weekly.

If I tried to drink what he had on his average night, I'd die. It also gave me a VERY skewed view of what an 'alcoholic' was because he was, for the most part, functional. I mean when I was 10 I just thought that's what people DID.

Anyway, I know how this condition hurts people and the people they care about. Nuthin but love SR.

Doc's told me quit or get bypass. I'm too far progressed for stints. **** that. I don't want any one elbow deep in my chest. No Smoke, no drink, eat healthy. It's screwing with me a bit....but changing that much at once is bound to jack with me! I am committed and hope SR is. For his sake.

Oh, and **** Stewie.

You obviously know what it takes to be sober, you just have to do it and WANT to do it. I honestly don't mind being straight. I like it much better than the alternative.

Best of luck!

Make today a great day everybody. Get in a workout, go fishing , take a nap, rub one out , run over a pit bull. Just do something to make today a great day.

Once you start seeing positive changes in your body, along with the endorphin rush of working out, it's a positive change for your entire life and CAN replace some of those feelings/cravings you get for booze.

I've seen many a drug addict or alcoholic replace substance with exercise. It's not all you'll have to do, but it's a good place to start along with counseling and/or classes.

This is what happened to me the last six months.

not only booze , but coffee, soda, etc.

I'm just eating healthier overall, just no cravings for crap food.

I'm 57 and in the best shape of my life.

Hit me up if you need workout ideas. I used to personal train and have my BS in Health and Human Performance.

DeepPurple 08-25-2019 09:31 AM

It's like smoking, it goes hand-in-hand with talking on the phone, driving a car, drinking a beer. When I finally quit smoking, chain smoker for 35 years, in 2006 my taste for drinking went away as well. Now I'll have a draft beer or two once a week, or mainly Sangria out of box once a week. I usually play music, concert videos to be exact, on Friday nights and that's when I have a drink. With a 75" TV and killer surround it's better than being at a real show. Otherwise, the other six days a week I don't even think about a drink. Big difference from when I was in my 30's and 40's.

LongSufferingToady 08-26-2019 01:54 AM

Dear Mr. Red,

That is good news. I come from a family of alcoholics. In fact, it's a divine right in our family and the alcoholism goes back generations. There's no easy way out of this one except to do what you are doing: stopping and reaching out for support.

The horrible thing about coping mechanisms (in this case drinking) is they work (of a fashion) or we wouldn't use them. But they never quite help us go beyond survival.

You are taking a step beyond survival, into grappling with living and that's the good news.

Hang in there.

Hey Red, hows things?

Got a call this morning that my high school quarterback was dead at 51. Apparently the woman he’d been married to for 5 years left him and took her three kids with her and he went on a 5 month drinking binge. They found him yesterday.

Dude dedicated himself to the slide. Don’t you do that.

Poor soul. Alcoholism is a disease of loneliness. I wonder if she left him because of his drinking.

Apparently not. I was with them last year and they were a fun loving couple. But I don't know the details. He wasn't an alchy though, dedicated to her kids and a good career. Surrounded by friends.

Couple of the guys took him fishing last week, he was so drunk he couldn't sit the boat. Dude took a wrong turn and he just kept going.

I think you're right. Lonely killed him.

Thanks for your thoughts.

This is good news SR. Alcoholism is a nasty beast. I have had many friends succumb to the powers of the drink.
I have a friend who was sober for the longest time, he called me drunk on Saturday and broke my heart. I actually didn't even know what to say so I told him I loved him but didn't want to talk with him when he wasn't sober. Felt bad about it throughout the weekend.
