New trailer just dropped. It’s now says just “Coming Soon” instead of July 17th.

I'm trying to theorize a little here. What's the significance of the word "tenet?" It's a palindrome. It's spelled the same way forwards and backwards. A reference to the time inversion? The word also ends where it begins, in a sense, at t.

How about the definition? A tenet is a principle or belief. The woman in trailer 2 around 2:10 says, "The people of the future need us. They need a tenet." I'm not sure if she says "need a tenet" or "need tenet." If it's the former does she mean it literally? The people of the future need a principle/belief? Too similar to Inception? Or does tenet refer to a person? Technology? An organization? The Russian is the bad guy I take it?

Damn, I haven't been this pumped for a movie in a long time.

The trailers are showing up on Twitter ads now. The fact that they are ramping this up suggests they've made the decision to go ahead with this in the near future.

Seems an odd decision, though. I know there's no chance any Toronto theater is going to be open in July for me to watch this (which has to be one of the top 5 North American cities for movie $$$).

Warner’s has now taken it off the release calendar. It might open on a country by country basis. Or even a city by city.

Warner Bros. has removed “Tenet” from its release calendar, delivering a big blow on the exhibition industry at a time when movie theaters had hoped to peg their re-opening to the late summer debut of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller.

Though necessary given the mass uncertainty over when cinemas across the globe can safely reopen, the decision further complicates Hollywood’s already bumpy plan to revive moviegoing. “Tenet” was originally scheduled to debut on July 17 but was pushed back twice until Aug. 12. It’s unclear when it will now welcome audiences, but the studio plans to share a new release date “imminently.”

“We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” said Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement. “We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.”

The studio also announced that “The Conjuring 3” has been postponed to June 4, 2021. The eighth entry in Warner Bros.’ horror franchise was schedule to debut in theaters on Sept. 11. However, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” was supposed to have additional shoots scheduled for April. Since production across the globe hasn’t been able to resume, it wouldn’t be ready in time for its target release date.

“Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theater partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen,” Emmerich said. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from exhibitors and remain steadfast in our commitment to the theatrical experience around the world. Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates.”

Sources at Warner Bros. stress that they will have to be flexible with its plans to release “Tenet,” which means it will not have a traditional theatrical rollout. Movie theaters overseas have already started to reopen, so there’s a chance it could launch internationally prior to a domestic release. That would be welcome news for exhibitors in Europe and Asia, two robust moviegoing markets that haven’t had a new Hollywood movie to entice audiences in months. In their plans to reopen, movie theater owners recently expressed concern to Variety that the global box office has all but been “forgotten” by U.S. studios. Previous films from “Nolan” have earned more than 50% of box office revenues from theaters overseas.

It's going to be interesting to see if they actually say screw the US and just go ahead and release it in these other countries. They'd probably still make a lot of money but it might increase the odds of a leak before it ever shows up in US theaters.

Movies are generally leaked online less than 24 hours after release, so I doubt that will factor into their decision.

Yep. If they open it overseas Before the US, they might as well go the VOD route in the US.

I guess I'll finally get around to watching Dunkirk as a replacement, even though the previous just make me not want to watch it. Seems like a war movie that's been done 100 times.

Huh. Didn't expect that.

I'm hit or miss on Nolan. Respect the hell out of his abilities but I liked Dunkirk so much more than anything else he's ever done. Because it's grounded. And somehow the Batman trilogy is the 2nd most grounded thing he's done and that's 2nd on my list (with Batman Begins being my favorite of that trio, probably the least bombastic).

Nolan, when left to his own devices, is just out there. And when the trailer started and it was looking like "Nolan does James Bond" I was thinking it was probably amazing.

But then he went Nolany again and sometimes he just ends up...well...up his own ass a little bit. And the quality of his filmmaking gets lost in the weirdness of his story.

But it is what it is. It'll almost certainly still be good. I just wish it was a little less esoteric.

I'm somewhat surprised that a company hasn't swooped in to open drive in theaters. This seems like a no-brainer because there will be high risk people who won't go to the theaters this fall even if they do open.
