McIlroy showed a lot of class with those comments after putting up an 80

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-16-2010 01:57 PM

This is the stuff that cracks me up:

Tiger's "new" putter is still a direct clone of a Ping Anser 2, just like his Scotty Cameron Newport.

It's the Indian, not the arrow.

I hadn't either but I also haven't seen a golf ball just sitting on a green go rolling because of the wind.

John Daly bringing Zubaz back to the mainstream. ROFL

Jerm 07-17-2010 09:36 AM

Phil with a great round of -4 going duck hooks an IRON off the tee OB on 16...with a double fairway to his left...thus in turn killing all of his momentum.

Only Phil lol...SMH.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-17-2010 09:42 AM

That's just a mental error. You should never put yourself in the position where that's even an option on that hole.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-17-2010 09:47 AM

Phil will always be undone in the Open by his inability to properly control distances with his irons. He's not good at it in regular conditions, and when you add in the wind and his trajectory, it only exacerbates his weakness.

He also hasn't been helped by several lip-outs, but to be honest, I'm not a big fan of the Stockton putting method. It's too steep.

And a horrible approach on 17.

Jerm 07-17-2010 09:49 AM

He was actually putting well today...not striking it well though for the most part.

He just doesn't have the trajectory to do well at the Open...hits it way too high.

He has putted very well today, but he putted poorly the first two days, as well as the US Open.

He has flighted the ball down better than in the past, but he's so focused on piss pounding his irons that he doesn't do a good job of controlling the distance.

I'm not a big fan of the forward press. You hit the ball very solid, but you tend to push or pull everything.

Theoretically, the more you deloft the putter face, the sooner it will roll, because you won't lift it with the loft and have it skid at the start.

That's why Phil has a higher loft on his putter now than in the past.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-17-2010 10:04 AM

And that's poor course management there, too.

If you're worried about hitting a flushed driver too far, hit a 3/4 chip cut with the big dog. It will go longer than the 3 wood, but not as far as one you nut.

Stewie 07-17-2010 12:02 PM

Heh! I'm watching the international feed of the British Open. No commercials for one, but the announcers are good and say stuff I have no idea what they're talking about. Westwood just made a long putt and the announcer said, "I wonder if that will light the blue paper under Westwood?" Huh?

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-17-2010 02:41 PM

You have to give it to Oosthuizen so far. That sad, you still have to think he's got a 78 in him tomorrow.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-18-2010 10:19 AM

This is a virtuoso performance. No one has dominated a major like this since Tiger at St. Andrews in 2000.

Old Dog 07-18-2010 10:27 AM

I really enjoyed his interview prior to the round yesterday. In a nutshell, "I'm not supposed to be here anyway. I'm just going to enjoy playing on a weekend in a major. And then he started laughing about it.
I had never heard of him prior to this week, but after that interview was hoping he wouldn't tank.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-18-2010 10:34 AM

Strange is right. His swing is exactly on plane. With the way he swings the club, it's hard to say that this is fluky.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-18-2010 06:48 PM

Just went out and played in 107 heat index. Hit the ball like absolute shit: one fairway and one green, but I managed to scrap together a 41, which with the way I hit the ball, felt like a 34.

I was hitting huge flares all day, which is really odd for me, because I never cut the ball. I finally started rolling my hands over super hard on 7 and hit the driver a bit more solid, but I was still all over the place.

That was exhausting, especially walking in that heat and humidity.

Yeah, I'm playing Shoal Creek tomorrow at noon. Its gonna be a high of 97. Pretty sure I'm gonna get heat stroke. But hey its free so what can ya do.

'Hamas' Jenkins 07-18-2010 07:02 PM

Basically, I was hitting the driver like Phil at Winged Foot in 2006--flush shots, but with a face that is way open and shoots the ball way right. With that said, I realized after hitting 4 tee shots that I was laying the club way off and I needed to roll the piss out of my hands to get it somewhere near square.

It still makes me wonder why he was trying to hit a carve slice the entire back nine instead of just trying to rip over a draw.

BWillie 07-19-2010 10:15 PM

So ever since getting back into golf this year. I've been using this online golf recording deal. Keeping track of my GIR, fairways hit, putts, etc. I even have this GPS thing on my phone so I'm even recording my driver distance.

One thing I have found is that I am a terrible, terrible putter. I guess I already knew this, but jesus christ am I bad. I also can't hit fairways, and this includes a round that I was like 12/14 on. My stats through about 15 rounds are

GIR - 58%
FAIRWAYS - 29%
PUTTS PER GIR - 2.22
PUTTS PER ROUND - 36.75
DRIVING DISTANCE - 287.9

I knew I'd be real good at Par 5's, but I'm actually worse at Par 4's than I am Par 3's according to my average score on each. WTF?

You're doing pretty well to be hitting 58% of Greens in Regulation considering how rarely you're playing from the fairway.

It's not the US Open where I play. It's easy to hit out of the rough unless you are hitting a 4 or 5 iron. Even at the "hard" courses around here like Ironhorse and Sycamore Ridge the rough is pretty much a joke. If they grew it half as long as the US Open nobody would even come play. I'd like to play a US Open course when they grow it that long. I'm pretty confident I couldn't break 120 and I'm about a 5 handicap right now.

Hell, most of the good courses here grow it to 2.5 inches, minimum.

Nasty, thick shit.

Because of upper back issues I hadn't played for two months till I got out last week a few times. I seemed healed and l haven't lifted a weight for that period of time either so I feel fairly loose. It's off to Branson Creek here in a minute for 18 holes with relatives. I should probably pack some extra balls for that track. It can be a ball eater.

The whole course is pretty nice but yeah the back 9 is hot and the two par fives back there are really good holes.

This was family golf with family I'd never met. That's what I get for being the last one there. They were good peeps of course but it wasn't conducive to good golf. Not that I'm capable of that at this point. I birdied #2 and then I lost 5 golf balls the rest of the day:doh!:

The forgiving thing is they drew names out of a hat for two player scrambles teams. Which I normally hate but in this case when we were done they figured I shot 78 with my own ball. :) With 5 lost balls? Sure O.K. whatever they say.

No it's not. Being down in golf pertains to match play. You never say "down" when referring to under par.

Depends who you talk to I guess. I'm talking when you are talking amongst yourselves in stroke play. For example, back during our college golf tournaments or even some of the men's summer tournaments if rumor got around that someone was 4 under or something they would sometimes refer to it as 4 down

Reerun_KC 08-12-2010 02:10 PM

Mickelson has already missed two 3 footers. He needs to fire Stockton ASAP, and stop that forward press bullshit. You pull the **** out of your short putts when you do that.

Apparently, the PGA's chatroom has turned into Thunderdome. The announcers keep begging the participants to watch their language.

I'd rather play in 100 degree heat, than 45 degree weather. And I'd rather play in 45-50 degree weather than 30 mph wind. You can bomb the shit out of the ball in 100 degree heat w/ high relative humidity.

'Hamas' Jenkins 08-13-2010 10:30 AM

FWIW, Mickelson has gone from 35th to 65th in putting since last year.

I walk most of the time depending on the course. If there are long walks between holes then I cart it. But I've always played my best golf in scorching heat for some reason even though it sucks to play in.

'Hamas' Jenkins 08-13-2010 04:36 PM

Found a new 52* Ping Tour Gap Wedge for 70 bones today.

Should be interesting to see how the leaderboard morphs over the next 2.5 hours with the wind kicking up.

It's Furyk's to lose IMO.

tk13 08-15-2010 02:35 PM

Steve Elkington in the house!

kstater 08-15-2010 02:38 PM

Furyk has gone bogey bogey since my post.

Garcia Bronco 08-15-2010 03:20 PM

Watney is out on contention. Wow. He really Dustin Johnsoned it.

'Hamas' Jenkins 08-15-2010 03:55 PM

He worse than Dustin Johnsoned it. Johnson shot an 82 on a course where the winner ended up -1 and no contender broke par on Sunday.

Watney is going to shoot an 85 on a course where the winner is going to be around -11 or -12 and numerous people shot in the 60s on Sunday.

CaliforniaChief 08-15-2010 03:56 PM

The thing about Furyk is that, the 2003 US Open aside, I never look at him when he's on a major leaderboard and even consider him.

He never strikes me as a guy who plays to win majors, but rather a guy who plays for top 10s.

And Elkington throws another dart into 16.
