If I recall, Whit is on the Gordo "take care of your body" routine, now. If that remains the same and his tools age a-la Zobrist...there's nothing that says he's heading towards decline before this contract is over. He's a smart player and had to work harder for what he's got than those of greater talent. Don't expect him to just let himself decline in his early 30's when many players still thrive.

Two things in his favor for aging well:

He’s a contact-oriented hitter, and his approach has shown improvement as he has gained experience in the majors.

I think he’ll be a little less affected by the aging effect than the average guy.

Mecca 06-18-2019 11:17 AM

The only thing not in favor is Dayton Moores recent decision making says whatever he does the right call was to do the other.

His minor league numbers would be just about the best in our system right now. Look up Lubanski's numbers. He wasn't that bad. Not quite sure what happened.

Third year in and at A ball he hit 28 HR, .301 avg. .903 OPS.

His last real year in AAA he hit 17 HR, hit .293, .899 OPS. He would have only been 25 years old.

Did he just give up?

Mecca 06-18-2019 11:30 AM

He played 2 years after that, the Royals likely didn't see him as a real prospect, he wasn't drafted by Moore either. If you go back and realize they were playing dudes like Rick Ankiel, that's all you need to know, he was 25 and the Royals didn't like him.

In reality his story isn't all that different than Starlings other than Starling was drafted by them so he probably still gets a shot.

OKchiefs 06-18-2019 11:41 AM

Not sure if true, but read somewhere that Soren Petro asked someone who spoke with Dayton Moore who he would pick between Rutschman and Witt if given the chance, and he joked it would be whomever read their Bible more.

He started getting injured and other guys passed him by. The Royals let him go and eventually he decided to go to college instead.

I thought the story was pretty good if you have an Athletic subscription and want to read it.

While that is most likely a joke the heavy religious influence on the Royals is pretty mind boggling......Mike Matheny is going to be this teams manager for that reason.

Soler does it again. #20.

Apparently the 8th Royal to hit 20 HRs before the All-Star break.

We aren't going to get it. I don't even think we will get #5 as long as Dozier comes back and we don't have more freak injuries. This is not a good team, don't get me wrong, but they are a hell of a lot better than the worst team in the MLB.

Especially if we end up calling up some of the bullpen arms in AAA. Looks like a few of them are starting to put it together down there.

I think Soler should put to rest any notion that power hitters can't survive in Kauffman due to the cavernous outfield. The dude is crushing it. Can he stick to the OF long term, or is he better off going to DH?

He can under no circumstances stick in the OF long term. He's played a ton of OF already this year and he's only a 0.3 WAR. That is how bad he is. For the Royals, he needs to be the DH - and stay there. Boni gets traded or DFA.

dallaschiefsfan 06-19-2019 10:56 AM

Boni goes down when Dozier comes back and Cuth/Duda end up splitting time at 1B, despite my wish that Duda gets released. Whit goes back to RF, Soler DH's and Dozier anchors 3B. Unless they shock with a Duda release, that is what will happen. O'Hearn is stuck in Omaha until Duda is gone...as I feared would eventually be the case when we signed Duda.

Duda....I just don't understand what we are doing here.

gblowfish 06-19-2019 11:25 AM

Duda can't hit his weight. If we're going to suffer at first bast, let's play OHearn and let him take his lumps at the big league level. They may trade Soler while they can get maximum trade value for him. He can't play defense, at all. I guess you could treat him like Kendrys Morales and just lock him in at DH if you can't get a fair trade for him. And I think they'll hold on to Boni because Soler has a substantial injury history. This is the first year he's gone this long without going on the IR.

Whatever happened to DJs left nut? I wanted to revisit him calling me stupid for doubting Bruce Harper two years ago. Bruce is struggling yet again, batting .247 with a 113 OPS+. And that’s with a .330 Babip. Hitting an atrocious .100 on balls outer part of plate.

Good call then. I figured Bryce would ascend a little more than he had. After last year's struggles though, I started to have doubts.

He helped coach one of the elite bullpens in MLB history, made our middling rotation in 2014 & 2015 look serviceable and then after we fired him, went to the Mets and helped **** up their elite rotation that everyone couldn’t stop slobbering over during the 2015 World Series. This is actually correct. His first manager was Jimmy Dykes, who was born in 1896.

If you want to play the degrees of separation game, Jimmy Dykes first manager was the HOF manager Connie Mack, who was born during the Civil War.

YES! Good point. Didn't he hit something crazy like 11 home runs that tied the game or gave the Royals the lead in 2014? Watched a game against the Indians and you could almost feel he was about to tie it up in the 8th, he then homered on the next pitch.

He was so clutch in 2014 and at the beginning of 2015. The injury he had in 2015 and the Royals run without him made people (even me) forget how just how clutch he was throughout our run. I think him holding at 3rd may have played a part in that too.
