I've been busy as ****, so I haven't had a chance to post since Sunday, and there has been a lot of discussion.
RE: DaFace's point that it was "what we were expecting." I think there is a fair case to be made that what we got wasn't what we expected. We expected Jon or Dany to take down the NK. I expected the battle to be lost and head south. And we expected a bunch of major deaths.
We got Arya killing the NK after a ****ing ridiculously well-filmed pitch battle. We got Jorah and a bunch of minor deaths.
There were a few problems. Not very many of them took me out of the moment. The two that did, were the 1v100 fights by the end would never work. Also, after the dead laid on the trench, it was visible in the backround that Jon and Dany had been making passes back there. That's reeruned as ****. They needed to be keeping the walls clean.
That's really not a difficult leap if that's all there is after that ****ing ridiculousness that was the battle.
I didn't have trouble with Arya's leap. I figured she was hiding in a tree or something. I read a theory that she stole that wights face that she stabbed in the throat and used that to get close. But she's a mother****ing ninja. I got past it. And I recognized the knife move from her sparring session with Brienne. I thought it was brilliant.
I don't have a problem with the episode, the only problem I have is what happens next. I'm not sure I give as much of a **** and don't feel the story line is nearly as compelling.
But whatever. That episode IMO was ****ing awesome. Sapochnik is a master.
RE: Azor Ahai/Jon/Dani. When the hell have prophecies ever ****ing worked in the show? Matter of fact, when has anything that is lining up to work ever ****ing worked? Ned going after the Lannisters and hatching a good plan. Robb Stark never losing a battle. Tyrion's master plans which are well thought out. Dany doing all the right things in Mereen. Shit that looks like it is heading down a legitimate direction goes to ****. So did this. So Arya managed to save it by playing off the same thing that she got Brienne with. Her opponent underestimating her.
RE: Castle defense. Yeah. Castles are ****ing great. Except when a giant blows down the gate. Sure, there are a few tactical errors, but I can see where they line up the plan as they do, as the main goal is the NK, not the sanctity of life.

After rewatching it a couple of times I believe ep 2 was one of the best episodes of the entire series. I can't think of any recent ones that came close, recent being the last few seasons, since the show went past the books.
I rewatched The Long Night earlier and liked it even more the second time. Knowing what was going to happen allowed me to relax and pay attention to the more subtle details. One thing in particular that was tremendous that I barely noticed on first viewing was the score. The music was just amazing, beginning to end, and it really set the tone for the action. And the end of the episode, putting aside the argument about whether or not it should have been Arya and just focusing on it in terms of television production, was just masterfully constructed.

The music was amazing. If you care, the New Rockstars channel on YouTube does a pretty decent job on the music.
I agree on the episode. It was ****ing amazing. And Sapochnik is amazing.
