My off-the-cuff theory is something similar to what they did with Mahomes. No, not for $450 million, etc., but possibly a longer deal than usual for a DT so the Chiefs can absorb the bulk of the cap hit a few years down the line. The trick will be getting CJ to accept a little less money now for more money later. But both sides have said repeatedly that they want to stay together, so I'm fairly confident they'll get a deal done by the 15th.

I hope Veach can swing something like this because the more I dig into the Mahomes deal the better it looks.
Mahomes is literally going to count < $30mm against our cap for the next 6 years. It’s crazy how much flexibility Veach has created for himself with the Mahomes deal. I could see everyone doing this kind of thing from here on out on the big deals:
- Almost no signing bonus at start
- Player gets security with iron-clad injury balloon payment
- Rolling roster bonuses let the team cut up the per year hit in 5 pieces each year
- Forcing the team to do it a year in advance guarantees the team is spending on players
- Since the team needs the player to restructure each year it gives the player more security that the team that is fielded is a good one and the coaching staff aren’t full of idiots — the player can pretty much force the team’s hand at any time giving additional security to the player.
It really is genius.
It takes you 4-5 years to get to a cap hit that equals what Mahomes is making and in year 6 they’ll presumably have the cap dollars to do it all again.
