It was meant as a compliment.

I know about your discussion. You and he have different points of view, and that's between the two of you. He appreciated the honest debate as well.

Perfect timing...Aces called as I was typing this reply. He asked that I tell you the debate isn't over yet.

...I'm glad the two of you can handle your differences in a mature way.

tell him to bring it.....

actually I know I have moments of being human and fallable, but usually I don't start the immaturity in those incidents.

I can really appreciate a difference of opinion when it stays mature.

I think it helps that he already respected you. And I hope you respect him. It's different than arguments with posters like Believer because there is no respect there.

Went on a wine-tasting tour on easter. I was surprised by three things.
1. I didn't know there were so many wineries in Virginia.
2. Some of the wine was really good.
3. An inordinate number of the wineries we visited grew Italian grapes.

I've just recently gotten into wine. I've yet to come to appreciate anything dry or not sweet.

Well, I much prefer beer but I worked at a white linen Italian restaurant and bar for a number of years that sold tons of wine so I have a working knowledge of the basics. I definitely don't get into the whole uppity disection of it though I can fake it fairly well.

I tried the Chenin Blanc with some lasagna. Didn't go together so well. Once I had a glass on it's own, I loved it. Saturday night, I had a Smoking Loon Pinot Noir. Wasn't bad.

el borracho 04-18-2007 12:37 AM

Yeah, you probably want a red wine with lasagna- either a dry red like a chianti or a big red like a cabernet.

Pinot Noir is a good sipping red. It's a light red but still rewarding. You don't need food with that one (but you can pair it with food it you like).

I'm thinking I'll stick with water with meals. I like to have a glass of wine while watching a movie or something.

Just getting into wine, which means within the last few weeks. I'm still not sure what all I'll like and not like. There are some wineries in Missouri. I really should make that my next road trip.

el borracho 04-18-2007 12:52 AM

The first time I ordered wine in a restaurant:

The first time I ordered wine in a restaurant I was on a date with a girl who was completely too high society for me- we were a terrible match. Of course, she was very beautiful and I really enjoyed discussing literature with her so I endured the associated interests in balet and food snobbery. Anyway, we were at this she-she restaurant and the waiter comes over to get our drink order. My date ordered a Cabernet. The waiter turns to me and I freeze for a second becuase at this time I know nothing about wine. Trying to avoid embarrassment about my wine-ignorance I decided to order the same thing as my date. Unfortunately, I thought she had ordered a caberet. Good times. At least she and the waiter had fun.

el borracho 04-18-2007 12:55 AM

Visiting wineries is good because you can taste a number of wines for cheap or free and usually the guy/ gal pouring the wine is happy to tell you what's what. That said, I have never had wine from Missouri, never knew they made wine there so my expectations would be low.

I always thought wine was "high class". If I'm drinking it, though...

Eh. Just a good way to sit back and relax. Read a book, watch a movie, having a good conversation with an old friend....it's just relaxing. I don't see anything high class about it.

You want to worry about your kids when their out driving fast and chugging scotch (hopefully not at the same time)?

el borracho 04-18-2007 01:07 AM

In other news, last week I went to Santa Rosa, New Mexico for the first time. Originally, I stopped to check out the "blue hole" (a large natural spring where you can scuba dive) but while I was there I read about nearby Puerto de Luna so off I went to check that out, as well, and I am really glad I did. Maybe not so interesting to some but it has some really old (around 200 years old) adobe buildings, a fairly midieval-looking church, and the Grzelachowski house which was the saloon about 100 and some odd years ago and also the site of Billy the Kid's last Christmas. The owner happened to be there and let me inside and actually chatted with me for a bit. Apparently, he moved there sometime in the 20s and his father actually met or knew (I couldn't tell which) Billy the Kid. He now has a collection of things ranging from 19th century household pieces to WWII pieces. Pretty cool. Oh, and I put my finger in the bullethole in the support beam (supposedly Billy the Kid shot at someone as he was leaving the saloon).

I had a friend that worked for a moving company. He moved this guy across country and set up his furniture in his new house in L.A. Part of his furniture was a wine rack that they set up in the basement. The guy started to place his bottles of wine in the rack when my buddy saw the name of the winery, St James Winery, St James, Mo. It just so happens that we grew up about 10 minuets from the winery. My buddy then starts to lie to this guy that the grape plantation sets on a toxic dump site (i.e. Times Beach). The guy starts to freak out and starts to frantically making phone calls.

My buddy just smiles and leaves without telling him the truth.
