Oh man, not Lenny. We've lost so many great ones of late.

But if any man deserves accolades as he exits this life for the next it is Len Dawson.

Godspeed Lenny the Cool.

ThyKingdomCome15 08-12-2022 11:44 PM

Oh man, I love that guy. Great quarterback and a pleasure to listen to in the broadcast booth. All the best to Lenny.

scho63 08-13-2022 06:11 AM

May you travel this last journey peacefully with a huge parade.

Len the cool is a big reason I am a Chiefs fan.

Sad news for sure.

PHOG 08-13-2022 07:04 AM

Class act through and through. Godspeed Lenny.

Eleazar 08-13-2022 08:13 AM

Time comes for us all eventually. God speed, Leonard.

Lenny the Cool is in the NFL HOF as a player and broadcaster. Two well-deserved honors.
He is an amazing guy that will be missed by all.

Wilson8 08-13-2022 09:57 AM

Len Dawson, a very special person and I always will have fond memories of him.

Hospice care can mean that death is imminent. They can give you morphine and other drugs to ease the pain but with new Medicare laws and rules, Hospice care can also be used when the family needs assistance in the care. It allows extra people in bathing and other care. I imagine though since the family is letting people know, that it means that Lenny does not have long to live.

He was one of my heroes.

Rain Man 08-13-2022 11:32 AM

We're so lucky that we've had Lenny as the face of the franchise for so many years. Great player, likeable guy.

jallmon 08-13-2022 11:56 AM

Thanks for the great memories, Lenny! Prayers to family and friends.

Len and his wife/high school sweetheart Jackie taken on the hood of the car he received for winning Super Bowl IV MVP. Sure the Fresca and cigarette is the most iconic, but in his final days I love seeing this picture. She was taken from him 44 years ago. I know right where he’s headed after his final breath! Go get her Lenny!

Thanks for all the hard work, dedication, and love you poured into the Chiefs over your lifetime. A true Kansas City legend. You will be greatly missed!

Al Czervik 08-13-2022 05:32 PM

He was my childhood hero!!!!
I ran into Lenny and his wife while picking up
Italian Delight in Mission, KS about 4 years ago.
We talked Chiefs until my order came up.
He has just retired from broadcasting.

HOF guy on and off the field.
Godspeed Lenny the Cool!

Stewie 08-13-2022 06:43 PM

When I played YMCA football as a youngster it was exciting when jerseys were assigned. Everyone was jealous of the kid that got #16. It really mattered.

Frazod 08-13-2022 10:13 PM

I'll never forget my brief encounter with Len. I went to a Chiefs/Bears preseason game back in '96 at pre-molested Soldier Field. This was a different time, and security was lax to say the least. This was my first Chiefs game in person since childhood, and I was very excited. Got to the stadium hours before game time - they hadn't set anything up yet and the gates were wide open. I just walked in. I assume that any security people just figured I was with the team, because nobody ever said a word to me. I walked into the seating area, then down by the field, then onto the field. I was standing at about the 20 yard line, turned around, and Len was walking right toward me. I was completely dumbstruck. All I could manage was "Uh, Mr. Dawson?" He replied, "Hi, how you doing?" and walked right past me. I just stood there in shock. Too bad I didn't see him coming from a distance - perhaps I would have handled it better and had a conversation or at least gotten an autograph. Oh well. It was still a neat experience.

So sorry to hear about this. Godspeed, Len. :(

Years ago I won tickets to a Chiefs game and there was also backstage passes to the booth before the game. I think it was The Fox radio station. Anyway, we got to get a picture with one of the radio announcers, but we didn't know who because it depended on who was in the booth at the time. My wife and I went, had a great tailgate, then went back stage up to the booth. The tour guide (or whatever) said "Let's get this picture lined up...Mr. Dawson, are you available?" And he stood up and said absolutely. I remember how big a guy he was. He came over and said "I'll stand here next to the little lady" and took the pic with me and my wife. I asked for one more, and switched places with my wife and got the pic, shaking his hand with the ring on it...he was awesome and we talked for a minute before the next people came in for their photo. Saddest part is...I can't find the pic of me next to him, I only have the pic of my wife next to him. But, I'll never forget that.

God Bless you Lenny. Class act all the way. Take it easy...

scho63 08-14-2022 08:05 AM

****, this thread is making me weep. :deevee:

Chiefaholic 08-14-2022 02:11 PM

When you look at the whole picture, Kansas City couldn't have found a better person to represent their franchise. On the field, off the field, in the booth..... The man was phenominal at ALL of them. I was born in November of '71, so I obviously don't remember the live games on TV. But, thanks to Youtube, I've had the privilege of watching many of his games, including Superbowl 4. Hank, Lamar, Lynch, Culp, D. Thomas, Delaney, and a host of others are waiting for you to huddle up one last time as you call your final play into the kingdom of heaven.

RIP Lenny....

REDHOTGTO 08-14-2022 06:26 PM

my first sports game was in 72 at arrowhead, if i remember right they played joe namath and the jets, lenny was bigger than life back then. what a man, we'll miss ya

Loved Inside The NFL as a kid. I’d have my helmet sticker book open figuring out what teams he was talking about. Back then it was the only source of highlights around the league, local news never covered it and PrimeTime wasn’t on yet

I'd like to see the Chiefs recreate the choir huddle photo with this years players wearing the jersey numbers as they are in the photo. Mahomes in #16 etc. Have it signed by all of them and sent to the family When Arnold Palmer passed away I had the same feelngs, I thought a part of me was gone.

God speed Lenny and family.

Saleenman607 08-15-2022 03:53 PM

Met the legend in 92’/93’ at the Cow Palace. Asked him to sign Chiefs flag and an authentic KC one bar QB helmet. Totally CLASS act! Not many people there in the morning and I got to ask him about the Ben Davidson fight. He told me Davidson was barking at him all game and told him he was gonna blast him no matter what. Lenny said he was a prick 😆. Always loved how Stram would call him Leonard when something went sideways 🤣.
The football world and World in general will surely miss this great man.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Len Dawson is the seventh son of a seventh son, born the ninth of 11 children overall.

According to folklore, the seventh son of a seventh son has special powers.

bringbackmarty 08-15-2022 09:50 PM

I was lucky enough to work at Meiners Grocery store in Brookside during Len's Inside the nfl run. He still lived on Ward Parkway then. I would always pepper him with questions about who he thought would win such and such game. Chiefs were in the middle of the marty years but he wasn't a homer. Dallas was doing their thing and before that Washington had won with Doug Williams. He basically said until K.C. drafted a legit quarterback in the first round it was always going to be someone else. Even when Montana showed up. He'd always say the NFC is going to take it. He was always super nice and honest. Never let me carry his groceries out, even if he had a lot. Probably talked to him a dozen or more times in three years. Even then you could sense the physical impact that era of football left on him. Physically and mentally. That was 30 years ago.

TripleThreat 08-15-2022 10:44 PM

His story should teach us all how precious time is. 5 years ago he was living like every bad ass grandpa… it’s scary to think how quickly time can shift. God bless. Love you god

That would be breaching the max amount of time a person would typically be in Hospice Care. Average Person usually lasts about 2.5 months in Hospice. But, I’m with you Brother. Here’s hoping.

Godspeed, Lenny the Cool.

People recover as well. I work in Medicare, wife is a DON…

Its not rare that someone gets off hospice after receiving proper care

srvy 08-22-2022 05:10 AM

We will see and hope you are right.

Frazod 08-22-2022 05:25 AM

It depends on what the underlying health problems are. According to Wikipedia he had cancer back in the early 90s. Could be that's back, or maybe he's just 87 and his body is failing. Those who know don't seem to be talking.

My MIL was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in 2017. She responded to the treatment at first, but eventually it took such a terrible toll on her that she said no more. They stopped the treatment and put her in hospice. Her lungs immediately began to fill with fluid, and she was dead the next day. That's what I think of when somebody says "hospice."

God this thread is depressing. :(

I truly wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the info. I've had to put both my Mom and Dad in Hospice. My Mom lasted 2 days, and my Dad a week. I always assumed (incorrectly) that was the last stop.

He is correct. A lot of people don't fully understand hospice. Its basically to keep people comfortable.

Nurses make regular checks on them and provide pain medication. Only stipulation is they can't provide drugs to improve an illness. If they improve on their own they "graduate" out.

Depending on the issue they will provide hospital beds, oxygen, wheelchairs, etc.

While being on hospice is obviously not a positive thing it doesn't always mean they'll only last a week or two

Garcia Bronco 08-22-2022 10:00 AM

In his honor, I had a smoke and Fresca yesterday. GOAT. Always enjoyed him and Nick B on Inside the NFL. Great player, great Ambassador of the game. Rest well sir. You've earned it.

All true, but as someone else in the thread said, the fact that the family made it public seems like it's an end of life scenario. That said, you never know.

Len Dawson was my Patrick Mahomes when I was little. From Quarterbacking my favorite team to seeing him every nite do the sports on channel 9. Of course I watched Inside the NFL and he always picked the Chiefs.
Patrick will probably turn out to be the bigger legend but you will never forget your first love.
