I was just poking around at his recent posts and noticed this one from not too long ago. Impressive that he had such a positive attitude about it.

This is probably a good place to leave this.

March 15th I was diagnosed with uncureable/inoperable stage 4 stomach cancer. I've been doing chemo and the usual treatments since then. We did scans last week to check progress and the chemo isn't working. So they're turning me over to hospice.

I'll still be lurking, but probably won't post much. It was great meeting a bunch of you over the years and thanks for the great entertainment on here. Don't feel bad for me. I've had my bucket list completed for years and I'm in good spirits still.

Take care and GO CHIEFS!!!

Thanks for posting, sounds as though he was in a good place and lived a full life.

booger 11-08-2021 04:36 PM

Sounds like he gave it a helluva fight against cancer. Sounds like a great dude and friend/family/brother. Sincerest condolences to you and his entire family and friends. You’re doing great with the stories for those of us who didn’t know him. That’s a wonderful way to honor him along with your plans in the great outdoors where you guys hung out. Sounds like he lived life to the fullest and with a smile on his face. Damn hard to beat that! Times like this are always rough. Hang in there Bwana

RIP Hondo

Dartgod 11-08-2021 04:54 PM

I can't say I spent much time interacting with him. I'm sure I met him at one of the many CP gatherings over the years.

That said, I'm truly sorry for the loss of your friend Bwana. I have a couple of buddies like that from CP and I'd be devastated if either of them suffered the same fate.

RIP

WilliamTheIrish 11-08-2021 04:55 PM

Bwana (”Bawan”),

Buddy, I hope all is well with you. Am sorry to read of this loss. It’s tragic. First images I’ve seen of RMC. And as somebody mentioned earlier, that name “Hondo” fits the man.

May he travel quickly to the next life.

TinyEvel 11-08-2021 06:44 PM

Shit. I had no idea. Was it cancer?

I met Hondo at one of the bashes, and we became friends, kept in touch on Facebook. Dude was legit a man. This is pretty shocking.

Wes was 100% solid. RIP Hondo.

RIP Hondo, and condolences to all who knew him well.

I thought about this the other day..I signed up here when I was 22, now I'm 41, that's crazy.

Bwana,

Your guys stories on this board sure reminded me of home. And Hondo is like many Montanans, just real. I can't explain the people there but it makes a man better. He seemed like a good one.

mlyonsd 11-08-2021 08:52 PM

Prayers to rockymtnchief's family and thoughts to you Bwana.

Do us a favor and whenever you're up on the mountain toasting him do one for you and him and then one for the rest of us.

I am happy he was able to see the Chiefs win another Superbowl in his lifetime.

RIP RMC. Seems Chiefs Planet is taking a lot of hits. At least our comrades got to see us hoist the Lombardi and two Lamar Hunt trophy's. God bless their families.

Hondo, this is for you buddy. :toast:

Just had time to go through and read Bwana's stories. I should learn not to do stuff like that I work. Very cool.

My only story is picking him up from the airport when he flew in for a bash. I believe KS Smitty was with me. I know there was a tailgate in there somewhere, too, but my memory is hazy (thanks, alcohol). Wish I remembered more.

Great guy.

Oh man, I've been dreading this day.

Still feels like a ton of bricks.

First and foremost, my sincerest condolences to you Greg. You were closer to him than any of us. I know your heart is hurting brother, and I feel for you. When you tip one out, please know I'm with you in spirit. You were a great friend to Wes, and the impact will last forever.

Wes was a bad ass. Hunter, fisherman, avid outdoorsman.

Dude was a Cowboy, and not the urban kind. Wes could've been dropped into the Wild West of the 1800's and would not only survive, he'd look good doing it.

Bad ass. Brother rode a Vmax."Nuff said.

Always hoped we'd go riding one day. I'll think about him out on the road.

After he posted about being sick, he would still like my artwork on facebook. I'd reach out and he wouldn't respond...Understandable, Wes wasn't the kind of guy that wanted someone slobbering all over him like a colicky child.

A good way to describe Wes is across between Jimmy Stewart and Steve Mc Queen, with a splash of Chuck Norris. Someone you would be glad to call friend.

I will miss him dearly.

The Cooter Hill story:
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...66&oe=61AF579C

So I had always heard stories about this guy, Hondo used to rodeo with back in the day, a black guy by the name of Cooter Hill.

On my birthday a couple of years ago, a buddy of mine drove down to Billings from Great Falls to hang out and go to dinner on my birthday. We end up jumping an Uber to a local western streak house/bar. We are sitting at the bar BSing with the bar tender, drinking beverages, when this guy walks in. Really friendly guy all smiles and about everyone in there seemed to know him. About that time, his cell phone rings and his ring tone is the "Where the white women at" from Blazing Saddles. Everyone was cracking up.

Shortly after that, I heard someone call him Cooter. I walked over and asked him if he knew a Hondo. He gets an ear to ear grin and says "He's a good buddy of mine, we used to bull ride together." Cooter came over and sat with my buddy and I and starts telling some Hondo stories from back in the day.

Hondo was supposed to come down and join us, but he ended up being on call and couldn't make it.

I decided to give Hondo a call and was giving him crap about some of the stories I just learned about. Hondo explains that one night in their rodeo days, they were trying to check into a hotel and the only room left in town was a single bed unit. With that being it was the only choice, they had to take it. I guess at least it was a king bed. Hondo says, "Cooter is the first guy I slept with, ask him". I lean over and said "hey Cooter, Hondo claims you are the first black guy he slept with, any truth to that?" Cooter about fell out of his chair, he was laughing so hard.

I handed the phone to Cooter so he could say hi to Hondo and after about 30 seconds, he starts cracking up again and handed me back the phone. I asked Cooter what Hondo said and he said Hondo told him, "Greg doesn't like black guys." You had to know Hondo's sense of humor. We all had a good laugh over that little deal and sat around killing off many cold beverages the rest of the night.

That is a great story.

For all the daredevil stuff I've done and do in life bull riding is not on my list. I'd sooner drop a cinder block on gas pedal of a running car while in the passenger seat and see where things go.

Balls of steel.
