I can only assume you have all heard the new Turnpike Album?
It's debut at #3 on the big boy charts.

I realize this isn't Red Dirt music but Eric Church's new album Mr. Misunderstood is very legit. It's much different than his other stuff. Very blues/country feel to it. More stripped down. I can't stop listening to the entire album.

Not sure if this is the red dirt scene, but it's definitely not Nashville.

Pretty good tune here.

Cody Canada did some solo stuff and now is with Cody Canada and The Departed.

That is surprising. I absolutely love it and have had it on repeat for the last week. Any country singer that can reference getting high and playing Golden Eye on N64 in a song has won in my book.

Lzen 04-20-2016 01:08 PM

Any of you guys into Shooter Jennings, Waylon's son? I'm not much into this red dirt style of music but some of it is okay. We're going to see him this weekend with some friends in Joplin (I think).

Buehler445 12-05-2016 08:32 AM

Not really red dirt. In fact, not red dirt at all, but I don't know where else to put it.

This is Rhiannon Giddens. She does bluegrass, jazz, Americana, whatever. I don't really get into a lot of those genres, but her voice is really really good. And she is really really good. Look her up. She's spectacular, man.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vzALY2pDbqY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Dug her up because she's the background vocals on this song. She can really belt it with a lot of soul.

Here's some Texas/red dirt artists I love that I haven't seen mentioned on here: Flatland Cavalry, William Clark Green, American Aquarium, Sam Riggs (his first album only really), Bart Crow, Zane Williams, Curtis Grimes is decent, and of course Wade Bowen. Just my little list off the top of my head that I didn't immediately see in the thread.

Can’t get past the Travis Tritt sound of this voice.

It’s like I heard this in the 90s. It really doesn’t help my listening experience.

I've seen them live 5-6 times and have spent 2-3hrs talking with them at different times in a small venue after the show. They're very nice guys, even if they like to party a little bit. They've gotten much bigger now and are playing larger venues. If you like the music and get a chance, you need to see them live.

These guys write a lot of their own songs. The stand up base player is a pharmacist by education.

You can listen to 2 full albums on this link. If this band doesn't become one of your favorites, you're not wired for this kind of music.

My playlist for this band is long.
Gin Smoke Lies
Before the Devil Knows we're dead
Southeastern Son
Blue Star
Every Girl

Kansas City Southern
Whole Damn Town
Long Hot Summer Days
Evangeline
Shreveport
Morgan Street
Wrecked.

Honestly, they don't have a song that I skip if it comes in the rotation in itunes.

Long Hot Summer Day

Zach Bryan. The story, he's in the Military and most of the singing is in the back yard of a friend, and just released his first album with some rented equipment in a VRBO house with mattresses against the wall to dampen sound. For the turnpike fans he's got a song about Evan Felker that doesn't suck.

Give this guy a look.

Here are just a few to make sure you know where some good stuff is located

I had a couple of beers with this guy one night, but he rolls a little too hard for my liking late at night. He's definitely a drop an empty baggie on the foor, roll out of a mini-van full of beer cans at 6am to get back on the bus kind of guy.

This is more bluegrass, but Billy Strings can jam the shit out the cat guts.

It looks like Evan Felker is making a solo run now

This guy likes to write songs about animals I guess. I love them though.

Buehler445 02-12-2020 01:55 PM

Good work Iowanian. I really wish they could have kept turnpike together.

Ubeja Vontell 02-12-2020 04:46 PM

Big fan of this guy, yes I know....

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/s2n-2sO7XfU" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And.....

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WtVrDud1gZM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Into that "High Lonesome" sound of those Appalachian hillbillies, the Bluegrass artists who are probably the most talented of all.

Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RfcDXUKtkZc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Refreshing to see this kind of music talked about, anything countryish seems to get pushed around. When in reality it's closer to the real deal than anything we have.

Won't do my .....back in the day...thing, but of all the talented countryish artists these two deserve far more props than they received.

Cody is awesome, and Somewhere in the Middle is one of my favorite songs ever written.

Pablo 05-23-2020 06:57 PM

I enjoy Cody Jinks. This song I stumbled upon on a 'Snake Farm' radio station on Amazon. Goddamn if it isn't the best thing I've heard in a long while. It's quite the story:

McMurty has some great songs and this is one of them. I found him about 3 years also and he's in my consistent rotation. I also love the lights of Cheyenne.

Iowanian 05-27-2020 01:35 PM

McMurtry's dad is Larry McMurtry, Author of Lonesome Dove.

rabblerouser 05-27-2020 01:48 PM

Still pissed that the Tyler Childers/Sturgill Simpson tour is canceled.

Lost in the Backyard off the album Where' You Hide the Body is an excellent tune of his as well. Long Island Sound off of Complicated Game is killer too. James McMurty is one hell of a story teller.
