Me before Gordon signed with the Chiefs: I mean he hasn’t actually played well in years, there’s no way he makes much of an impact

Me now: Gonna be the best WR2 in the league, super talented, a shame he’s been suspended a bunch otherwise he’d be a hall of famer

Meh. It is what it is.

Tells me they have seen enough of our project WR's that just are not getting open enough to bet man coverage.

Gonna be some new larger WR's in next year. FA and draft picks.

The Franchise 09-27-2021 02:18 PM

Gordon who hasn’t played for two years is still better than Pringle, Robinson and Kemp.

Maybe they traded Dieter for Dance lessons.

-King- 09-27-2021 02:19 PM

I was hoping for a Brandin Cooks trade but oh well I guess. Hope it works out because we need someone to work out there.

Deberg_1990 09-27-2021 02:19 PM

Andy has a long history of reclamation projects.

Makes sense I guess.

ChiefAshhole1056 09-27-2021 02:20 PM

I love how Veach operates. No-risk signing, the very least he’s a decoy with a big enough body that he should provide some blocking capabilities. Give him a couple weeks to learn enough of the responsibilities to get some snaps. This offense needs the physical presence his type of WR provides.

This is similiar to the Leveon Bell signing last year....

If he contributes, it will be a steal. If he is a dud, there is almost no cost.

Risk free move for the Chiefs. Their locker room can handle anyone.

I am expecting Mahomes to actually be able to complete a quick slant now that he has a WR with enough size to do it.

Chargers killed us with their big body WR's with that pattern. We don't have that route in the book with our midgets.

But it's pretty unrealistic to expect anything from him.

With that said, he's probably being paid nothing and has no guarantees in the contract - so it's worth the dart throw for sure.

His teammates all seem to want him to succeed. His talent was so undeniable that even a decline (hell, a significant decline) would still be a genuine NFL caliber player. And he's like 18 months older than Pringle is.

I feel like Kemp and/or Pringle did some damage to their standing last week. And if the Chiefs think Gordon can make a contribution, they're smart to take the (extremely minimal) risk.

My dude said basically everything I was going to say...

Dude is an addict. That takes a toll on you, but plenty of people with addiction have gotten a handle on it and made things work.

The comparison that comes to mind for me is a baseball one - Josh Hamilton. Before the addiction, truly uniquely gifted athlete. After the addiction, even at 80 percent of his physical abilities, still a great player.

Gordon was so freakishly athletic that even if he is only 80 percent of what he was before, he still can be a really effective player.

TwistedChief 09-27-2021 02:33 PM

No downside.

Only upside.

How is it desperation to sign someone like him? Did we trade some pick for him? Did we give anything up?

I’m pretty sure we’d be signing him regardless of whether we were 3-0 or 1-2. He has the potential to make us better than Fountain (or Kemp). End of story.

BigRedChief 09-27-2021 02:33 PM

it’s all upside and no downside. He has no leverage. But, still couldn’t land in a better place for him
Personally.

He was freakishly athletic. He’s still relatively young. It’s a no brainer for him. If he’s clean, in shape….. Mahomes and him could be outstanding.

If he drugs up again, he’s gone without any financial risk. I trust Mahomes, Kelce and the honey Badger to rein him in if he steps out of bounds in the locker room. If they report issues, he’ll be gone.

ok ....this signing is just a kick the tires signing this isn't 2013. the guy used to have speed and be able to cut out of his breaks like a much smaller receiver. He lost that after his 2nd reinstatement with Cleveland.

the last time anyone seen him he looked about 235. unless he his sub 220 i wouldn't get any hopes for him.

Spot on! There is nothing but potential with this move. I dont see it as desperation, I see it as being opportunistic. In the past we would lose out on opportunities like this because they wanted to play with Brady or Manning…. It’s not like there are any potentially good defenders that are being released from suspension that we could grab instead…

A better question is, why is Marcus Kemp still here? After 5 years you know if he can play at WR or not and that answer is obviously not. You're supposed to churn the bottom of your roster looking for diamonds in the rough. Not hanging on to career special teams only guys for 8 years.

agreed. No draft picks or trades. No financial risk. 3-0 and we still make this move.

DJ's left nut 09-27-2021 02:40 PM

The nice thing is that his skill-set should adapt quickly.

They're not going to be sending Gordon on a slew of double-move and option routes. He's a big body possession receiver with high-point skills at this point in his career.

It should be fairly quick/easy to get him up to speed on running slants in the red zone and/or go routes.

This isn't someone like Maclin who needs to put moves together to get the job done. He's a big man who had good deep speed and body control. If he has any of that left, we can put him to work by week 7 and get something out of him, IMO.
