TV Answer Man, a buddy got an e-mail saying DIRECTV is giving away the Sunday Ticket for free this year. I didn’t get the e-mail and I’ve had DIRECTV for 10 years. Are they giving it away for free? Is my buddy joking with me? — Carl, Reno, Nevada.*

Carl, your friend may be telling the truth, but that doesn’t mean*you*will get the 2021 NFL Sunday Ticket for free. Let me explain.
Several DIRECTV subscribers yesterday*posted messages*on social media sites saying they received e-mails from the satcaster indicating they will get the Sunday Ticket’s Max package for free during the 2021 season. The Max plan, which includes the RedZone Channel and Fantasy league channel, normally costs $395. (The Ticket’s base plan, which costs $293, does not include those two channels. Both plans include access to the streaming edition of the Ticket.)
Click Amazon: See Today’s 1-Day-Only Deals!
“Grab your face paint. The 2021 NFL Sunday Ticket Max is yours,” the e-mail states. “DIRECTV will celebrate this season of NFL Sunday Ticket Max by giving it to you, our loyal fans, at no cost.”
The e-mails generated a significant reaction on social media with some DIRECTV subscribers saying the popular football package was being gifted to every existing customer.
However, DIRECTV has confirmed to the TV Answer Man that only “select customers” are getting Sunday Ticket for free. The satellite TV service won’t explain who is getting it for free, or how many existing subscribers are getting it for free. But this is similar to*last year*when DIRECTV also provided free Sunday Ticket plans to select subscribers.

“We sometimes provide additional perks to our loyal customers as a way to say thank you,” an AT&T spokesman told the TV Answer Man last year.
AT&T this week*announced*that its sale of 30 percent in DIRECTV to private equity firm TPG has closed, allowing it to form a separate company for DIRECTV that will be jointly owned by AT&T and TPG. But the free Sunday Ticket has nothing to do with the new DIRECTV. This is just a continuation of a loyalty program from 2020.
The free Sunday Ticket for existing customers also is different from DIRECTV including the plan in certain packages for new customers, which it has done for several years.
Last note: The free Sunday Ticket is only being gifted to DIRECTV subscribers, not AT&T TV customers. The Sunday Ticket is not available on AT&T TV, which will soon be renamed, DIRECTV Stream.
Carl, hope that makes sense. Happy viewing, and stay safe!

ATT almost ruined DTV.

I worked for DTV for 5 years then 2 years more as they got absorbed by ATT. They were like the Borg. I programmed the NFL Sunday Ticket streaming order flow by the way. So when I tell you how to sign up and save money, I know what I'm talking about.

I ended up transferring to the software architecture group because I thought it would be interesting. I worked from home full time and had nothing to do. I know this sounds like heaven but I hated it. I like my job, it gets me into flow state.

I complained to my boss that I had nothing to do, and he told me to create my own job. So I did. I got a side job and basically had two full time jobs for a year. That's how I paid for my big road trip to Panama.

It took me a while but I finally figured out how the whole scam worked. We would work on prototypes and proofs-of-concept, mostly for the ATT.com. We'd have a nice handoff meeting, all smiles. Then they'd just ignore it and do whatever they wanted to do anyway. We were the architecture group. But we could only suggest things.

So the boss of att.com was more than happy to say he was using our stuff - when our group did our quarterly dog and pony show to the higher up (to prove our worth basically). And my boss was more than happy for us to just do diddly - as long as our group kept getting funded. I think a lot of the other guys I worked with had side jobs or were fixing up houses all day or something. Just call into the meetings.

I was a loyal customer from '97 to around 2017 but now need to go different, big D.

Starting over I would appreciate some ideas of who to go with? I have Amazon Prime. Just order from there?
I gots to brush up on my fantasy stats.

Thanks!

It's a few posts back - you need to know the name, birthday and school of a student. Name on credit card does not have to match.

JohnnyHammersticks 08-24-2021 09:48 AM

This thread just saved me ~$800. Because of the earlier posts regarding a few people getting Sunday Ticket free this year, I called in (lying...kind of) on Aug. 8th and told them that I had 2 friends that got emails saying that their NFL Sunday Ticket was free this year. Told them (lying again) I had been with DirecTV and Sunday Ticket longer than both of these guys and that since I wasn't getting Sunday Ticket for free to just cancel it. Said I'd stream games on illegal streaming websites, and that this unpleasant experience would probably cause me to drop DirecTV altogether.

Some chick from DirecTV left a message later that day saying they could offer me a $60 loyalty discount, but she didn't specify whether it was a one-time discount or $60/mo so I didn't respond. Opened my monthly bill email this morning and saw that they not only didn't cancel Sunday Ticket per my request, they were charging me full price for it. Called in and told them that on August 8th 2 different reps confirmed my Sunday Ticket cancellation request, so why was I being charged for it? Told them I wanted it cancelled and that I was going to look into Hulu or some other streaming service and drop them altogether. Got transferred to a "loyalty discount specialist" who offered me a $60/mo loyalty discount for 12 months, plus an additional $16 discount for 6 months, and Sunday Ticket Max.

Hey guys, it’s time to figure out how I’m gonna watch Chiefs football this year. I currently have no satellite service. I’m doing the Hulu, Netflix, Amazon deal. What are my options?? Do I need direct tv? Can I stream some service to my cell phone??

Do you want to stick to legal options?

Those illegal streams in my experience are so hit and miss. I just wanna wake up Sunday morning and know I'm gonna be able to watch the game.

Pretty sure you can just purchase streaming Sunday Ticket for your phone or tablet. Will cost you a few hundred but it’s an option

Chief Pagan 09-02-2021 01:46 PM

Last year, I got a buddy to sign up who lived in an apartment and couldn't get a dish. They haven't seemed to try too hard to prevent you from sign up for streaming in the last few years. Although I haven't yet tried this year.

I used to sign up with a student account which was cheap. I don't know if they still offer that. But I don't know as many college students anymore.

Your yearly "Get DirecTV to discount NFL Sunday Ticket" thread

Sources: NFL prefers Apple for Sunday Ticket; package could offer more choices

https://theathletic.com/2845054/2021...-more-choices/

Quote:

The NFL’s much-discussed Sunday Ticket package is in the news of late, with one report having Amazon as the lead contender to acquire the out-of-market games that are up for bid, while another touts Disney’s ESPN empire as interested.

All fair, but it’s still early in the process, and sources say the NFL wants — or perhaps, better termed, hopes — Apple gets the out-of-market package. And that package could look a lot different structurally than the one DirecTV has shopped since its inception in 1994, charging a basic rate for all the games. Under consideration is adding choices like allowing fans to buy just one team’s out-of-market games, or perhaps even stand-alone games, sources said.

“Everything is on the table,” one source said, but nothing is set in stone.

DirecTV is paying on average $1.5 billion a year in a deal that stretches through the end of next season. All indications are the satellite carrier’s parent AT&T has no interest in renewing, especially at the $2 billion-plus per year fee the NFL is reportedly seeking. AT&T has struggled financially, and talks with the NFL in recent years have proved unproductive.

So, why would the NFL prefer a bite of Apple (sorry, couldn’t resist)? The league already has a deep partnership with Amazon, which provides stats through Amazon Web Services, and will pay $1 billion annually starting next year for exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football after carrying the midweek games nonexclusively since 2017. And the league has long been intertwined with ESPN, which surely could juice its streaming service, ESPN+, with Sunday Ticket.

Apple, which did not reply for comment, is investing heavily in Apple TV+, home to hits like “Ted Lasso” but not live sports. However, unlike Amazon, which is a retailer, and ESPN, a content company, the NFL with Apple would for the first time be doing business on a large scale with the preeminent technology giant. It would marry the NFL with the company that sells arguably the globe’s most critical consumer product, the iPhone.

“Apple is different from Amazon in the sense that they are still a technological device company,” said Patrick Crakes, a TV consultant and formerly an executive with Fox Sports. “So that diversifies the league — or the league’s always believed in an inclusive diversified kind of network mix. Apple is a different company than Amazon, even though people talk about them in the same breath. They’re very different. So I can see how the league might view that as a great diversification to their portfolio for the next decade.”

There are also reports the Sunday Ticket deal could be paired with an equity position in NFL Media, so aligning with a company like Apple could be viewed favorably by the NFL.

The NFL declined to comment. A source close to the league had this to offer: “(T)here is a ton of interest in this product from a lot of companies you could probably guess (yes, Apple is one) and probably several others that might not be top of mind. … We will see how it ultimately shakes out, but I wouldn’t say anything is imminent here.”

And that’s about right, with the earliest the league might agree to a deal months away.

“You are going to hear a lot of different names get tossed around,” Crakes said. “All of this stuff can be true. ESPN can be involved. Amazon can be out front. And Apple can be preferred. And none of it means anything, right? That’s the problem with it.”

Crakes is not as bullish on the Sunday Ticket package as some. Off the bat, the buyer has to treat the deal as a loss leader (meaning it loses money but serves a strategic purpose). DirecTV charges about $300 a year for the games ($400 for those who also want add-ons like RedZone), though it often packages Sunday Ticket as free in other offerings and discounts. For example, it is currently offered for free to subscribers of its Choice tier. There are roughly 2 million Sunday Ticket subscribers, though Crakes estimates only half pay the full fare. That brings in well less than half of the rights fee.

For DirecTV, it’s a marketing expense, so Sunday Ticket almost surely would have to be treated as such by the interested companies, whether Apple, Amazon or others. Apple charges $4.99 a month for its TV stream, or $59.88 a year, so it would need to sell over 33 million subscriptions to make a $2 billion fee work — unless it views Sunday Ticket largely as akin to an advertising expense.

Could others be interested? Network partners CBS and NBC have their own streaming services, the two Ps: Paramount+ and Peacock, respectively. And Netflix, which has long said it’s not interested in sports rights, just put its nose under the proverbial tent, saying it might bid on Formula 1 rights.

And about Netflix, former NFL Media CEO Steve Bornstein recently said at a Sportico conference that it’s a question of when and not if Netflix gets into live sports. This argument looks at sports as a way for streamers to offer programming that distinguishes them from the many movies and TV shows that litter these services.

Back to Crakes’ worries over the Sunday Ticket value. There is the loss leader issue, but he also questions whether Sunday Ticket is really a must-have for most fans.

“So, first of all, I’ve got four national windows, right?” he said. “So on broadcast television, most of the games are on fully distributed pay TV. And so this product is for Sunday, daytime, it’s for games. It’s not going to be for the top game right here in the market. It’s not the top national game, right? That national game ends up in the master window somehow. So this is for true fans and for people who want to either have an ecosystem where they can flip around, but there’s RedZone for that.”

Many have been wrong before when arguing the NFL would suffer for creating more windows and packages. (Looking at you, Mark Cuban.) And the first two weeks of the NFL season further solidifies the incredible hold football has on American media. According to Fox Sports head of strategy Michael Mulvihill, since the season started, the 14 most-watched shows on TV are either NFL games or pregame shows. So everything Crakes argues might be right, but chances are the NFL will still roll in the Sunday Ticket cash, whether from Apple or some other company eager to hitch its train to the football popularity steamroller.

Yes they still offer that. It’s $120 for the season. Here’s to nieces in college!

Get a VPN. Connect to Brazil. Signup for NFL International Gamepass. $74 for the season + 13/mo vpn if you wouldn't normally have one.
You get all games Live, playoffs, Superbowl (no blackouts), All older games (I only looked through last year), NFL redzone and 40 min condensed games.

https://www.expressvpn.com/stream-sports/nfl/

Issue I have run into is getting it onto a TV. I've been using a laptop output via HDMI, works great. You can set up the VPN for your whole network which would allow you to cast. Supposedly there is also a international Gamepass app for firestick.

Beware running work devices through VPN, 15 minutes after installing VPN I got pinged by the network Admin asking me if I was in Brazil.... Network flagged me for travelling from Kansas to Brazil in minutes, locked my account.

I found out my buddy's wife is taking nursing classes. $119 for the season, or at least that is what he charged me.

How should I stream Chiefs game this Sunday?

cabletech94 04-20-2022 07:55 PM

Dumb question, short version:

My mom lives an hour from KC and has Dish network. Does Dish have Ballys sports for the royals games? She’s not technical at all, and forget about me trying to talk her through the phone on setting up something from the web.

Thanks in advance, you are all beautiful.

This is either the second or third year in a row that DirecTV sent me an email that Sunday Ticket was free for me. I haven't even had to ask. My monthly plan is pretty high and that may have something to do with it.

Most likely will be giving up DTV in the next few weeks. I have been a customer since 1997.

Will go with youtube tv and sunday ticket.

I am a little amazed that youtube has not reached out to sunday ticket customers-but I would guess DTV will not give it up.

I give DirecTV two years tops before they're defunct. 50% of their customers were only subscribing for Sunday Ticket. I dropped it once I figured out how easy it was to get free streams, but they're really screwed now.

My guess is them and Dish Network will have to merge to survive at some point.

https://www.nexttv.com/news/less-tha...%20discounting.

According to this, 23% of DTV subscribers had Sunday Ticket. Out of # that some will cancel and some will just switch over and pay youtube but keep directv.

I'd guess they lose 10-15% of their subscribers. Which might actually make them money compared to what they were paying the NFL (or what they would have had to pay to compete with Apple and Amazon). I'm sure they did the math and came to that conclusion.

DTV was very profitable before AT&T bought them. Their overhead is low compared to the fees they bring in.

Same. Just switched a week ago. It's easier to search for channels on DirecTV but that is the only comment I have. The product isn't really that different. It's nice to have NFL Network again. It's not included in DirecTV Stream.

NFL+ dude I'm telling you. $14.99/month. You can watch any game from the last 12 years whenever you want.

Regional games are on live and if you can't see it then the replay is loaded 30 mins after the game is over.

You have to get the app on your tv. Or have the bandwidth to send it to your tv via your phone. It should prompt you to "pair" it with your TV.

Personally, I'd just get the app on your TV.

This is the route I took, and so far so good. Most of the games are in the Dallas market anyway, or in prime time. We’ll keep an eye on how things progress during the season. I can see it’s infinitely cheaper than my previous package with DirecTV.

Humm. That makes it much more appealing. I had thought that none of the replays were available until 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Sunday night game.

8 Chiefs games are on unopposed.
Most others are not against Vikes games here.
I have tix to the Vikes game
So I am guessing at least 15 will be on locally one way or another. I can stream the ones I cannot get.

I just saved 230 or so a month by dropping DTV. I will not get sunday ticket this year. Another 350 or so saved.

I will need a firestick for one tv.

I can get locals with a paper clip in the antenna port.

It will just be weird for a while.

I don’t believe the prime time games are on Sunday ticket. Just out of market noon/3 pm games.

true

Going through a lot of changes now. Obviously there's no reason to keep DTV now, so it's going away after 22 years. I currently have AT&T's dogshit internet service - switching that to T-Mobile. That should be here in a couple of days and should immediately and vastly improve my download speeds.

My problem is the wife, who is a diehard Braves fan and will straight up ****ing murder me if I do anything that screws up her watching games every night, so I'll have to keep DTV through the end of September. After that, I plan on going to firesticks for all the TVs. Then AT&T can take their dish and their crappy overpriced internet service and shove it.

All of this will be a tremendous challenge for me, since I haven't switched anything in years and am unfamiliar will all of the new tech. Ugh.

As for Sunday Ticket, I don't know if I'll even bother with it at this point. Damned near all the Chiefs games are either in prime time or broadcast locally in the Chicago area. I think I paid for ST last year and ended up needing it for only two or three games.

My internet, for various reasons, has been down several times to every one time snow impacted my DirecTV. I called DTV to cancel and they offered locals plus the base package for $30/month. So I switched to YouTube TV but kept DirecTV as a backup. I'm unwilling to ever miss a Chiefs game. I'm also unwilling to not watch live. YouTube TV is quite a change and there are pros and cons but after using it for a month, I think YouTube TV is better.

.

I got the MLB package through YouTube TV. Only cardinals games. $69 a year.

I love YouTube tv over box cable. And it’s way way cheaper.

displacedinMN 08-27-2023 05:26 PM

I have antennas on 4 tv's to get local channels. then other services.

Thinking about it, there will not be any new shows until at least January. So, I can find other streaming shows to watch.

But with the antenna, I feel like it is 1979 and I am tuning it to get to a new channel.
So glad we are going backwards on this thing. Next they will ask us to give up AC or pay for local channels OTA.

The switch to digital was one big govt scam

jdubya 08-27-2023 08:08 PM

For those that have Verizon. Wife and I turned in our 5 year old phones for new ones and with the upgrade we get one year of Sunday ticket. Of course its being covered in new costs but we needed new phones anyway. Our monthly fees went up $15.00/mo

I don’t have YouTube TV but will be getting the stand alone Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone through YouTube. $440 for the year. My main motivation is precisely because the Chiefs are so often not playing on Sunday afternoon. I really get frustrated being stuck on whatever they choose to broadcast locally which is often not a matchup I actually want to see.

So I’ll be able to choose from any of the out of market games, and they even have an option to have as many as four games on split screen at one time.

I didn't know this. I just liked being able to post on the Planet while watching the game. 4 games at once would be sweet.
Actually, I can have up to 4 monitors so I might have to rig something....

I would like to have two separate, full quality streams to separate TVs. Trying to split out a quarter stream... Yuck.

And actually, I would like to have separate high quality streams of the same game that was synced. The 'normal' view and say the view from behind the QB.

I would think you would need a great computer and extended screens
May need to buy this to do more screens

Well, I don't think ST will provide two separate, high quality streams for one residential price?

Am I wrong on that?

I have a low/medium end gaming computer. But I don't really want to 'expand' a quarter screen up to my large screen TV. That was my original complaint.

displacedinMN 09-02-2023 01:53 PM

So, I have been without DTV for a week and football started today.
I have watched a lot of OTA stuff-especially CSI Miami. Not that I thought it was a good show-But cant go wrong with Eva LaRue and Sofia Milos.

After spending forever trying to figure out how to watch the Iowa game today-I think I may need YoutubeTV. Just dont feel like searching 8 platforms. I just want a list.

Been watching CFB on multi view all weekend. It’s ****ing bad ass

Chief Pagan 09-02-2023 04:08 PM

I had just been assuming that Sunday Ticket wasn't going to allow multiple streams to the same house for a standard subscription, but I guess they are.

So yes, I have 50 something inch TV that is actually still on the wall of my living room (because I chose a new spot for the new one).

I just need to decide if that's where I want to leave it and hook it back up.

Sports bar here I come...

So I got it but how do I set it up on the downstairs TV's? I don't need the boy watching a ton of youtube fap vids and shitty music on my log in and ****ing up my youtube history. Do I have to log in on my regular youtube profile to also watch it off the phone/comp downstairs?

Assuming that you're referring to YouTube TV and not regular YouTube, you can go into the settings and add additional profiles. This will accomplish your goal.

Chief Pagan 09-03-2023 12:53 PM

I actually have two separate Google email/accounts so I can have two separate YouTube accounts (I already have a family plan) with separate YouTube history.

One is strictly for when I want to veg out watching music. The other is for everything else.

It used to work great. But a few years ago Google made the recommendations algorithm much worse.

It decided you can't stay in your echo chamber. So even though I have only watched music on my music account for the last 5+ years, it now recommends a lot of non music crap.

And then, for instance, it seems to get overly specific much quicker than it used. Watch a couple of heavy metal covers and that is all it will recommend. At least as far as music. It will of course continue to recommend hurricane coverage or whatever that I never click on.

If you want to watch something on you tube without messing up your youtube history, you can watch it in a private browser.
