In the show, no gods make no sense.

I get the theory that the lord of light doesn't want you to know whats on the other side. So when you are brought back he only gives you the "black" to remember.

However, being dead for days and then being brought back to life without any ill effects has to be some kind of "magic". The work of a higher being that can reverse necrosis or they were put in some form of stasis by the God. Anything else just doesn't make sense in the show.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Jon lied about there being nothing but black. He never wants to see people have to fight and die and telling them it's just black could at least prevent people from becoming even more eager to kill each other. That said I could never see the TV show doing anything like that.
