Donger, I don't know where that chart came from, but it doesn't reflect what gas prices did in the midwest. I drive an average of 5000 miles every month for work, so I buy a lot of gas and have a good idea of what I've had to pay. I haven't seen prices anywhere close to the $2.97 that you show in 2018. I don't think that I ever saw above $2.50.

That's because it's the national average. Here it is for KC:

I'm assuming that's the US average, which means while it was $2.50 here it was $3.50 in California, leading to a $2.97 "average".

You're welcome. And if anyone wants to discuss how politics and political policy affects gasoline/crude pricing, we have DC for that. And I'd be happy to engage in it.

Last night Mrs. B sent me out for pizza. I noticed all the gas stations had jumped their price for unleaded from $2.22 to $2.49. So I went on the "straggler station hunt." You know, that one station who's employees are lazy and don't change the price till a few hours behind every one else? I have one such station close to my house, but it's the loser burnout creepy gas station. The credit card reader on the pump has been vandalized so you have to go inside to pay. When I went in, I was the only one wearing a mask. Clerk had her mask under her chin. The guy in line ahead of me was in pajama pants, arguing about how the vape thing he bought there the day before "Damn neer set mah trailer on fiah...." He wanted to bitch at Hadji, the owner. "Hadji won't be in till tomorrow sometime. He sets his own hours." Finally got to the front and bought $20 to top off my tank. This morning they were at $2.49 just like everybody else. But I saved $2. It's the principle of the thing...

$2.75. Seems to have stabilized from the issues in Texas.

Up to $2.75 here, odd because we're usually below the national average.

I'll tell you all the best thing that I've found for saving money on gas. It's the Conoco/Philps66/76 gas station app. Pay using the app and they take 15¢ per gallon off right at the pump. If you set it up to use their credit card as payment through the app, it's another 10¢ off at the pump. And it can check for every station in the area and give you the price at each station. I use it a lot. If you figure that I drove 60k miles last year and got 30 mpg, I used roughly 2000 fallings of gas and saved approximately $500.

chefsos 03-24-2021 12:29 PM

This won't mean anything to those outside the mid-Atlantic area, but the last few weeks have been a little weird. As a rule, Wawa has been the price leader anywhere they build a new store. They always set the standard; everyone around them either matches the price or loses business.

Now, the local Wawa is running $.12/gal HIGHER than the Valero and Exxon stations all around them. And there's still a mob at their pumps.

I just bought 2000 rounds of .223. full metal jacket, not brass, .65 a round, and I thought that was cheap. I would have laughed at paying that price 3 years ago... but it seems to be a bargain. Octane is great, need some cheaper stuff to shoot. Think I am going to buy an AR that shoots .22 to stay practiced.

They work great from what Ive read.

Life.

CHAMBLEE, Ga. - More than 1,000 gas stations in the Southeast reported running out of fuel, primarily because of what analysts say is unwarranted panic-buying among drivers, as the shutdown of a major pipeline by a gang of hackers entered its fifth day Tuesday.

One could argue that this is what you get when you neglect infrastructure and allow monopolies and cartels to operate unchecked, resulting in massive consolidation of supply funneling through single points of failure. I'm not going to argue it, but one could.

Of course. There's reserves of nearly a billion barrels of gasoline in the Northeast as part of the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve. But the relevant authorities (potentially up to and including the President) would have to decide to use it. Thus far, they haven't.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is crude oil, not refined gasoline.

This is a disruption of shipping, not a disruption of refining.

Mennonite 05-11-2021 04:30 PM

Ah, I see. That's what I was (mis)remembering. Octopodes is right about there being a northeast gasoline supply reserve though. That's the first I've ever heard of it, honestly.

Good Lord, we share a road with these people.

Of course. There's reserves of nearly a billion barrels of gasoline in the Northeast as part of the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve. But the relevant authorities (potentially up to and including the President) would have to decide to use it. Thus far, they haven't.

A million, not a billion. That sounds like a lot, but it's really not.

Remember when we were energy independent and gas prices were relatively low? Good times, those.

Had to double check myself, and you're absolutely right. It's not a lot, each barrel isn't even enough for 2 full tanks of gas, which is probably why I had the larger number in my head. After all what good is a million barrels going to do you? Ah well, silly me thinking the government was actually prepared ROFL

Yep. I had to look it up, but New York alone consumes 350,000 barrels of refined product/day.

Oh damn, I wasn't aware that it was time for panic buying. I'll go fill the tanks on all 3 cars tonight.

You live in flyover country, so you're good. Just be sure to enjoy the 3.50-4.00/gal gas headed your way by Memorial Day!

And don't forget to mother**** Donger every time you fill up, that's essential!
