What if they just renamed the team after a SINGLE, badass, historic Native American?

Like, what if the descendants of Red Cloud and the Lakota were like, "Wow, that's a great honor!"

The Washington Red Clouds.

They don't even have to change the logo, really.

I mean, total pipe dream and they wouldn't touch the idea, but if the family and the tribespeople were behind it, there's not much ground to stand on.

It's no different than naming a team after Joe Louis, in the case of the Browns.

Most people don't realize that, but it's the case. (at least Paul Brown himself said so. The team later backtracked this publicly as the name was based on his skin color and nickname, "The Brown Bomber")

Naming a team after a person for their bravery, legend, honor, etc. is very different than naming your team after an entire people.

I get ya, but the thing is that original Redskins name was also looked at as a symbol of pride by many native americans. Native americans were actually drawn to like that team because of that name and the fact there was 4 native americans on that team in the 1930's and they themselves wanted that name. But unfortunately although your idea is cool and would be unique, it's 2020 and the SJW's would come running again. I'm sure one day they'll have a problem with the name "Browns" too. Just give it time.

You should see Twitter.

People are calling for the Vikings to rename the team based on the fact that the real, actual, Norse Vikings burned and pillaged the whole of Europe a thousand years ago.

It's insane.

COVID needs to end so some of these folks can set their manufactured outrage aside and go back to their jobs at the Hot Yoga Studio.

I don't particularly care about what "SJWs" think, but I do care about what Native Americans think. You're probably right that perceptions have changed, but that happens.

So for what it's worth, Berkeley did a survey this year, and they found that, among all of those who self-identified as Native American, 49% "strongly agreed" or "agreed" (7-point scale) that the Redskins name is offensive, and the percentage is 67% among those who were heavily-engaged in their tribal cultures.

https://news.berkeley.edu/2020/02/04...ascots-survey/

So it seems it's definitely not unanimous, but it's also not a tiny portion who find it offensive.

I think the mindset has changed towards the name over time as people who weren't involved in the early ongoings of the founding of the name aren't as in tune with the beginning nature of what it originally represented to those natives who were a part of that community at the time.

I did read your article though. Thanks for sharing.

It would be kind of cool if they just went full generic for a season. Not even a pronoun to describe someone.

Announcer: Here we are, on a nice cool day at Washington Football Stadium. The offense is on the field, and the quarterback is behind center. Here's the snap, and the quarterback drops back. The quarterback looks, throws, and it's caught by the tight end! The tight end jukes and stiffarms the opposing left inside linebacker. The tight end is running down the field, and the tight end has one opposing player to beat. That player is the strong safety, and the strong safety makes the tackle at the 1!"

It'll take months to sort through the name alone, let alone getting a logo and associated branding in place that you don't regret in a year. After that, they have to print new signs, business cards, modify uniforms...it's a lot.

I was surprised when they said they wanted to get it done this year because it's just not that easy most of the time.

Gravedigger 07-23-2020 03:24 PM

I mean what else are they realistically supposed to do, they are demanded to change their name, file patents, copyrights, print merch, change uniforms, change helmets, and just so many things that come with a brand change of this magnitude. This is them saying, "Back off, we'll get it later this year, no need to rush this." I'm a fan of this, looks old school for now. This kind of gear will sell like hotcakes because of the likely one year it will be in circulation before being cut off.

February 2nd is when Washington is going to announce their new team name. They picked groundhog’s day to do this, some think they chose this day because somehow Hog will be in the name. Maybe Washington Red Hogs, that sounds awful. Their offensive line was nickname the Hogs when they were dominating the NFL. Any legitimate guesses. They announced Red Wolves will not be chosen.

Hard to believe Riggins was a track star in high school, I think he won the Kansas state title in the 100 yard dash, ran it in 9.8 seconds. He was good with the Jets too, not just Washington. But he definitely wasn’t in the class of an Earl Campbell or Walter Payton. I think the best RB Washington had in the super bowl era was Larry Brown, but that’s just my opinion, not too many people agree with me on that. I’m not sure if FedEx will be a sponsor still when they move to a new stadium, so I’m don’t think the team name will be chosen with any regard for FedEx. Washington Post had a article a couple weeks ago that Washington team representatives were in discussions with Northern Virginia representatives, about building a dome stadium.

Redtails would have been bad to me because it reminds of how Miami Ohio and Arkansas State were forced by the NCAA to change their Indian inspired names. So they went to Redhawks and Red Wolves. Just a desperate attempt to keep the old moniker alive with a generic animal choice.

RealSNR 01-05-2022 11:55 AM

Better than a WNBA team name.

I hate mascots that don't end in an s.

Your team is made up of players. Each player has a mind, body, and makes his own decisions. Together, they act individually, but work as a TEAM.

They're not a substance. Or an idea. Your kicker is not some idea. It's not a "dream" or a "liberty."

Admirals is lame. After hearing about what Jag fans are doing this week, I really think Washington should have gone with "Washington Clownshow". Just imagine all you could do with that. The crowd could dress up and the pan around the stands would be nightmare fuel for all opposing players and fans.

I hate mascots that don't end in an s.

Plus, it's more intimidating to know that you're about to play the Washington Football Teams.

I'm still really pissed about that.

Everybody in town still wears Fighting Sioux gear. Because Fighting Hawks is the dumbest thing they could have come up with. When I saw that was one of the names that made the cut to 20 or whatever it was, I thought that was some kind of joke, like every person on the committee said, "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if I voted for the worst one?"

This is how we will one day have Seymour Butts as president, people.

It would still be better than Red Tails. If my football team changed their name to that, I'd switch teams.

(And I don't care about the history or politics. I'm just talking about the name "Red Tails". It's a terrible name.)

I'm convinced that if they had gone with Ermines they would be one of the top college athletic programs in the country right now.

I like Avalanche, because your team can act like a massive pile of snow and destroy other teams in its path.

I actually like Redtails. Really, I liked all of the "Red" names I heard thrown around: Redwolves, Redtails, Redhawks (that's a new one but sounds cool enough).

Admirals isn't bad. Commanders wouldn't have been terrible either.
