The premise of this thing is that you pay 7.95 per month (introductory offer) and you can go watch as many movies as you damn well please at your local theater.

Anyone using this?

Thought about it, but honestly I don't really average 1 movie per month. You get some kind of discount for food and drinks too. So it's probably actually worth it.

Looks interesting but you can only buy one movie at a time. A family pass would be interesting.

I got this for my wife and she uses it at least once per week. If I had the desire to go to more movies I would get myself one as well. But I really like my home theater setup and my EZ chair.

I've got it. Fantastic investment if you watch 2 movies a month or more. It can be paired with loyalty reward programs as well.

I've had one since October. I don't see a lot of movies, but frankly once a month more than pays for it. it is nice being able to see a movie for mindless fun and not really caring how good it is and regretting the money you spent.

FYI, I've heard that buying an advance ticket occasionally hasn't been an issue if you want to plan a date night.

Just got one for me and my wife on that intro offer a couple days ago. We don't go a ton mainly because it's too expensive so this gives us essentially free access to go to any we want. I'm sure we'll get in one a month and more during the summer and Christmas movie seasons. I know a few others that have it as well and use it quite a bit. I'd say for the cost it's well worth it.

Man. I was gonna sign up today, but there's two issues:

1, their website won't tell me what theaters are part of the program (the map won't populate with theaters, and I'm in a metro area)

2, there's tons of people on Twitter bitching about getting unsubscribed and still being charged, as well as their support not responding at all. I tried calling support about the website, and it was a recording apologizing about the volume and then it just hangs up.

Kinda has me a little gun shy.

If you are in the KC area it has most movie theaters that accept Mastercard. It does sound like AMC has been removing some of its theaters, but they are in the major markets like NYC and LA.

If you have a Costco membership, I believe you can get a year of Moviepass for $90ish and you have Costco's return policy to fall back on if something happens. I had signed up for a year before Costco started offering it or I would have went that route.

It was actually Moviepass who removed those theaters. The reason for it wasn't released but it is guessed that it was because theaters in major Metros are more expensive. Its also rumored they did it to show AMC that Moviepass is getting big enough to have influence on which theaters get business based off of who they let their subscribers go to.

I read that in addition to selling data they are also wanting theaters to give them a piece of the concession money. Their argument is that their subscribers spend more on concessions because they don't pay for tickets. Amc has been their most vocal opponent.

I did the Black Friday deal they had, which was $90 up front for the whole year, and it is pretty cool. Was able to catch thursday night premiere of Last Jedi. In total I have purchased 6 tickets using the card, so far.

MoviePass has less than 1 month of cash on hand. Not looking good for the future of the company.

MoviePass Owner's Cash Runs Low With $9.95 Monthly Deal Taking Toll

The clock may be ticking for MoviePass Inc. and owner Helios & Matheson Analytics Inc.

Helios & Matheson said in a filing Tuesday that it had just $15.5 million in cash at the end of April, and the firm has been going through about $21.7 million a month. It also has $27.9 million on deposit with merchant processors.

The revelation sent shares of the technology company down 32 percent -- and sparked fresh concern about whether its MoviePass business can survive.

[...]

Since MoviePass doesn’t have its own supply of movie tickets, it has to buy them from the theaters. That’s expensive, and there’s no easy way to recoup the costs.

The biggest movie-theater chain in the U.S. provided a glimpse this week at just how tough that proposition is. AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. said on a conference call that MoviePass has been buying hundreds of thousands of tickets from the chain at about $12 apiece on average. And the subscribers are attending nearly three movies each month: They went 2.62 times in March and 2.75 times in April.

That implies a loss of over $20 per customer each month.
To be sure, not all members are using AMC theaters -- and in many parts of the country, it’s cheaper to see a movie. The average U.S. ticket price is just over $9.

Even so, AMC Chief Executive Officer Adam Aron thinks MoviePass is unsustainable.

Yeah, I've been wondering about how this price is possible long term. They've added restrictions on it now by putting a ticket verification process in place and only allowing you to go to one movie once and not multiple times. I honestly thought it was odd that they didn't just have direct deals with specific theatres to pay them a % of total subscribers revenue, etc. rather than a pure ticket price situation. Theatres make more money by selling the additional concessions still and people showing up more often. It seems it would be in their interest to handle things that way.
