Selling the shares could be similar to an under the table payment to avoid the salary cap, which the Patriots did with Brady’s TB12 training company.

He hasn't technically bought anything. They have an agreement, but it hasn't been approved by the other owners yet. Also there was a report yesterday that the league might force Brady to stipulate that he'll stay retired before they'd approve the deal.
