Just got back from Jamaica, and brought home the coolest souvenir.

We rescued a shelter dog!! Shelter dogs on the island are usually in for a helluva hard time. We lost a dog we had for over 16 years about a month and a half ago. Was absolutely brutal! We decided a few weeks ago we would do our best to rescue a dog on our trip. My wife had been in touch with the Montego Bay Animal Shelter. She had a small litter she recently rescued from Kingston. We saw this guys picture, and fell in love. Wasn’t a completely easy process, but my wife put in a lot of work on our end to get things in order.

We arrived last Tuesday, and the Sabrina brought this guy buy our resort on Wednesday on her way back to Kingston to get his vaccinations. We were pretty tipsy and had to wait a bit due to lots of traffic between MoBay and Ocho Rios, but when she got there we knew he was the one. We partied like crazy for the rest of our trip, and she met us at the airport with our new puppy when we were scheduled to fly home.

I have to say the lady that runs that shelter is a real life angel. She is doing the lords work on that island. The day she dropped our dog to us at the MoBay airport, she had to then travel to Kingston to pick her sister up from the airport. Right after she picked her sister up, she saw a dog near the airport in very bad shape. But she has a tiny car, and it was too full with her sisters stuff, as well as the dog she travels with. She left some food for the dog and vowed to come back as soon as she dropped her sister off. She went home, and dropped her off, then went right back out for the dog. On the way back, around midnight she saw a Dane that was hit and badly injured on the side of the road. It was with a German Shepherd, but the Shepherd took off when they pulled up. She flagged a motorist down and they helped her load the Dane into her car so she could take it to the nearest animal hospital she worked with. She put out a bulletin about the Shepherd because she wants to reunite the dogs. She then STILL went back out to the airport and drove around for an hour before she found that other dog. It was in bad shape. Missing one of its eyes, and part of one of its back legs. I saw a picture of that dog once she got it back to her shelter, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking, but also encouraging because despite all the shit that dog has been through, it still looked like it was smiling because she found it and was feeding/sheltering it.

I don’t know how much that lady makes, but it’s not nearly enough for what she does. Our cost to rescue the dog was $500. $250 went to her/the shelter, and the remaining cost was for vaccinations, and the paperwork you need from the country to take the dog from there. Think we paid $125 to Jet Blue to get him on the plane. He didn’t do too bad on the plane ride home. Cried as we were boarding, and I was praying to god he would sleep on the plane, which he did.

My oldest daughter was watching our dog Tarzan the crazy man, who is our 3 year old Dane. When we got home, my daughter and her friend brought Tarzan home. I went out to her car, loved him up, walked him around the front yard, then took him inside. He could obviously smell the new dog all over me, so he knew something was up. The girls were holding the puppy, and I had Tarzan’s leash. Tarzan is a very gentle sweet dog btw, he’s never been aggressive towards any other dog. Tarzan leans in to sniff the puppy and gets immediately bit on the nose, kinda hard cuz it bled for a little bit. I felt so bad for him. So he was obviously very apprehensive of the pup after that. They eventually got around to checking each other out. And are now getting along good. They’ve been playing, which is hilarious given their extreme size differences. The puppy is about the size of Tarzan’s head.

His name is Chaos the Gaza pup. We did a poll at the resort and that was the winner.

Certain airlines will do the transport for a small fee. Luckily Jet Blue was one of them, I think Caribbean Airlines is another but not positive. The lady at the shelter took care of all the gathering of paperwork and getting it stamped and signed. She had to go into Kingston to do it all. I’ve seen some places charging as much as $1k, but we chose this shelter because the lady seemed very genuine, and not trying to make much just helping the animals get to a better place, and life. We sent her the info she needed, and she took care of the rest. Was pretty easy. Also she has people that rescue, that don’t go to the island. She finds people who are traveling back to that area and sets it up with them to fly the dog home to their new home. She is a Saint!

Edit: the animal has to be small enough to fit in a small carrier between your feet, or on your lap. Also she provided the soft crate for transport, and the meds he needs. He’s about 9 weeks old now. He’s too young to get clipped so we will do that asap. Also have to get him a rabies vaccine as there is no rabies on the island.

Excellent work sir.

Any idea the breed?

I'm guessing it will get along with your Dane. I love those big Oafs, but didn't think I could ever handle one.

Not really sure on the breed, but he has big paws. I think the pet plan we have will do a free DNA test and tell us.

Good deal! It always makes me happy when a dog is rescued.

Serious question though, wouldn't it have been easier and just as fulfilling to rescue one here? Not judging, just curious

Good job Cooch!!! When it's time my next is going to be another rescue. Have you ever watched the you tube videos of the chick in Ukraine who rescues dogs from the war ravaged areas? She does great work also. It's listed under Love Furry Friends - Rescue Channel.

Definitely would have been easier, no doubt about it. But after seeing how poorly Jamaican shelter animals have it, we decided to rescue one from there. Plus as you know, Jamaica is our happy place. We try to help as many people there as we possibly can. The employees who don’t get meals, we order meals for them. Ww bring lots of toys and clothes for the children of the people who work at the resort. I literally just got a $180 speaker to take to Jamaica, and I left it with a really good guy there. We talk all year, and he called me every day I was in the hospital checking on me. I needed to make room for the puppy too and the speaker was BIG and heavy. So I left it with O’Neil, and just seeing the huge smile on his face when I told him he could keep it was totally worth it. Doubt he could ever afford something like that, or even get one on the island. So I was happy to leave it with him. We try to take care of as many people as we can. We love the island, the vibe, the culture, and especially the people.

Edit: we went off resort this time with a few people from the resort this time. Did Karaoke, then went to a club. The club was WILD! Jamaican dancing is basically simulated sex. But we had a blast. Never felt threatened even though we stuck out like a sore thumb. But quite a few people came up to us and talked to us. Was a wild night.
