This franchise did not invest in the defense properly before this year.

2013-nothing
2014-Dee Ford, Phillip Gaines
2015-Marcus Peters, Steven Nelson, Ramik Wilson
2016-Chris Jones, KeiVarae Russ...oh wait.., Eric Murray
2017-Tanoh Kpassagnon

Dorsey gave us talent bc we were first on the waiver wire and Sutton’s old players. Dorsey did a poor job of drafting defensive players to replace the 2013 wave.
Not all of them is on Dorsey though, as coaches in general (and players) are responsible for the development of their skills.

2014 - Ford is the only one left on this team. Unlikely he will be here next year. Gaines, well, we know how that went - not on the team.

2015 - Peters (traded), Nelson (still on the team), & Wilson (gone)

2016 - Jones (still on the team), Russell (gone), and Murray (will be gone soon most likely)

2017 - Kpassagnon (still on the team, but looking like a bad pick, but will know better by year 3 as it's commonly accepted that it takes 2-3 years for a player to develop).

2018 - Too soon to tell.

So apparently either management can't identify defensive talent from the college level, coaches can't develop them or a combination of both.

Truthfully, he isn't really the talent development guy either. That's what the position coaches are for.

I'm staring at the list of:

Britt Reid
Mark Deleone
Al Harris
Emmitt Thomas
Mike Smith

Someone on that list needs to actually start earning a paycheck.

Thanks for proving my point that Dorsey could not draft defense beyond Peters/Jones and that is why we are in this mess.

At that same time, the defense was finishing 5th, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 15th in points and 24th, 7th, 7th, 24th, and 28th in yards.

The "respectability" that Andy brought back to this franchise was almost WHOLLY due to an ultra-conservative offense that never turned the ball over and a REALLY good defense.

It's like people don't even watch the games.
Are you saying Mahomes is running a different offense?

I'm glad we've handled this cautiously. Most of Berrys injuries have occurred in the first game of the season. For whatever reason he never seems to get his Acl into football shape fast enough. I wouldn't be opposed to even limiting his snaps until we're totally positive he can play a full game.

Just use Berry in late game situations if we need a stop, he can be like a relief pitcher in there until he's healthy enough to play a full game.

It wont happen, but I am all for this. I think Watts is their plan for the future (he's actually done pretty decent from what I recall), I think you can give him the snaps out of base and nickel with Parker to keep his progression coming along and have Berry come in on 3rd downs or crucial drives.

There is zero reason to rush him back into this, he's needed for leadership and clutch playmaking. This is forming into a likely playoff team at this point, you do what you can to ensure Eric Berry is a part of the postseason roster.

I definitely think the playbook has more of a vertical philosophy in the passing game. Routes that they wouldn't even think about doing w/ Smith. Mahomes throwing ability opens up the playbook.

I have bitched about the deficiencies Reid has had since he got here but he's awesome. If he had Brady, Rodgers, Ben, Wilson, Peyton Manning, he's got multiple Super Bowls.

Mahomes is the most talented QB he's had as a head coach (yes, more than McNabb, Vick, Kolb, Alex, etc.). I'll ride this wave until it crashes along shore.
This is a great post! All true.

Didn't he get to like 3 or 4 NFC Championship games and also 1 Superbowl appearance? Yeah, his coaching may have gotten stale in Philly, but he was no Marty S (another coach I loved, btw).
